Freedom is not an Empty Calendar, freedom is not a life without Obligations

What is freedom? I have spent many years with an idea that keeping my calendar mostly free is "freedom" - a coach recently gave me some perspectives that have made me rethink this objective.

Great video. I remember when I was a teenager, I heard an older guy I respected talk about "success" (a word connected to freedom in some ways). He said, "Success is the freedom to choose how you spend your time." That's not unlike the sentiment of *_freedom = chosen obligations_* . The work still feels difficult sometimes (e.g., editing videos that don't want to be edited!) but it has that long-term payoff and progress you mentioned and is worth it.

Really powerful share. About 15 years ago I sold a quite substantial business and found myself suddenly free of all the work obligations that I’d lived with for so long. I thought it would be a great period of my life. It messed with my brain, my purpose to such an extent that I found myself doing meaningless stuff, repeatedly. It eventually put a significant strain on our marriage. Luckily, I had married an wonderful lady who helped me find my way. So, I now have obligations again and overall (there are inevitably some aargh moments) I am thrilled when I look at my diary. Thanks Connor for articulating this so well.

I also enjoy running and often have some problems to motivate myself to go out especially when it’s cold, rainy and dark. I dedicate all my runs to people who I have not seen for a while like friends who live in a different city or like my father who died a few years ago. Running has become a form to communicate with people who I like and try to not forget. A lot of times I write a text message or just call them afterwards. This helped me a lot to stay engaged with running.

Thank you Conor, this is exactly a remainder I needed to hear. I have a vision, when I reach my financial freedom, then I will begin the obligation I chose, not the ones forced on me, but until then I will continue to adapt and move on. If I die before I reach my vision I will be glad that at least I have tried. Take care of your self.

Coner, I wholeheartedly agree with your statement, and the reasoning behind it. For me when I am driven to make a goal a reality the answers and ideas to overcome obstacles are there when i awaken. Those answers that arrive early in the morning while i am still in bed are without a doubt the purist, most eloquent designs I could possibly think of, period. If you are not obsessed with achieving a goal or standard for yourself you are in essence lost. At least for me, at my age that is how I see it. Thank you Coner for your wisdom and generous thoughts.

I like that way of expressing it - it is not empty that is freedom, it is a sense of control. Cal Newport's book "So good they can't ignore you" is a good resource on what it takes to create this type of life - in summary, to be fulfilled at age 50 - you need control of 3 things: who you work with, what you work on, where you work

A few years ago I had a reflection - I enjoy work more than vacation... because I made work become stuff that I love to do, I do well and the world values... vacation was just "empty space"

I think freedom is more than choosing right obligation to do, it also means having the ability, circumstance and time to do it. Infact satisfaction and success is tied not only to choosing right things to do but actually doing them....
