This sport is about feeling free and enjoying the underwater world. Competitive egos have twisted it into "who can go longer, deeper, faster," and it has led to this sport is the 2nd most dangerous adventure sport next to base-jumping. The longer you dive, and the more you are in the water, the longer your body will allow you to be in the water. Always having a buddy with you too is also another layer of safety.

    I am fascinated with free diving, and I have a question. But first, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge on this subject. It looks as though the people who are in the water with the diver have to wait until they are told to go ahead and help the diver. Is that what I’m seeing, or is there another reason why they hesitate for a few seconds before bringing the diver up?

  • @yd8104

    @yd8104

    3 жыл бұрын

    I had the same question. I think it's because the diver can still recover by himself even after a loss of motor control and his performance be valid because people are allowed to push their limits. And as soon as the security guys put their hands on the diver, the performance is invalid, so they give the diver a chance to recover by himself. But when the diver's head falls back into the water it's over and that's when they help him.

  • @stefanoc3891

    @thefreedriver89

    5 жыл бұрын

    As far as it concerns safety during training, it is important that you have at least one spotter always looking after you while you are under water. Most of the divers in this video are actually in competition, so they are trying to get their best performance with the stress of the competition. Moreover, dynamic apnea is the freediving discipline characterized by the highest number of blackouts, because it's very easy to go beyond your limits and swim those extra 5 meters which will make you go BO. Anyway, a blackout remains a not common thing, especially when training, so, as far as you have a spotter, you're always good to go.

    valerio.l105 I see. Maybe i can just bring a friend to always watch me. The life guards are pretty strict there about holding your breath, but maybe will not care if my friend watches me so they don't do the work if anything. But i do apnea walks most of the time, and seem to be okay so far

  • @thefreedriver89

    @thefreedriver89

    5 жыл бұрын

    Pools' life guards always tend to complain about holding your breath underwater in the swimming pool; most of the times they won't let you do that. Plus, you cannot count on the life guard as a spotter: you always need someone whose attention is 100% focused on you all the time. If you find a swimming pool where life guards are cool about freediving and you have a training buddy or simply a spotter, you're good:)

    It looks like these are competitions. If you cancel the dive and resurface, you have 15 seconds or so to perform a "surface protocol", like removing your goggles, nose clip, and give the ok sign to the judges. And if everything is ok, then your performance counts. If you blackout during that period and need intervention by safety divers, your performance doesn't count. So it seems the safety divers only intervene when the divers can't recover by themself.

    Bullshit. This statement can get people drowned. There are way more factors than that. I had a black out in 3/5 of my usual distance, just because I did it in the end of the training session, hadn't had enough recovery from my static hold and I did hyperventilation. Didn't even feel bad, just went to sleep. That's why you never dive/train ALONE. Never. Ever.
