Hi Refinery, Parallels desktop app is pretty demanding on resources. If you will be using it on your Mac, without being plugged into a charger, obviously your battery life will be reduced. It depends. You will be playing games it will drain the battery pretty fast. If you are using just simple office apps on Windows it will be ok for a day of usage. If you’re not using your virtual machine temporary it freezes. So it’s not consuming battery 🪫

is there like a way for it to speed up?

UTM and parallels desktop are not the same in terms of everyday usage. In fact UTM is unbearably slow since it limits the processor to only 1 GHz. Combine the fact that you’re using windows 11 on 1 ghz and the lack of graphics virtualization and you are off to a very sluggish experience. You’ll be able to run basic things Microsoft Access or SPSS if you want to, but it will be a pain in the but to run those apps. Watching videos on KZread is impossible as well. I personally recommend VMware virtual machine. It is paid software but free for personal use. It is fast and has good virtualization capabilities.

Hi, I think you will not be able to use UTM for editing 3D objects as it doesn't have a graphics accelerator. I think you will be open the app and even view your project but it will be very difficult and quite slow. It may work for 1 time usage but for everyday usage you need to use Parallels ;)

Now in mac when you use tra kpad you come into mac os. I want to switch between the virtual desktop of win11 using trackpad geature, is it possible? Can you make a video on that please? 🙏

oki I got you :) You want to with between macOS Desktop and Windows 11 using the swipe gesture on your trackpad? like I did in this video. Well, it's pretty easy. You can go to the settings of your MacBook and activate all gestures for your trackpad (additional gestures). The just open Windows 11 on one desktop and go to full-screen mode. Using 3 fingers (swipe left or right) you can switch between systems.

When I use three finger gesture I switch between mac and parallel, I don't want that, I want to switch between virtual desktop that I have created in win11 in parallels Is it clear now?

For me, UTM works perfectly for what I want, I only use simple programs that are not available for Mac OS.

As a Mac user, I'm going to tell you my real opinion. If you want to work, like editing videos, photos, making projects, etc, go for a Mac. If you want to play video-games, have a Windows. Now, if you want to do both, get a Mac and a Windows, it much faster, more easy, and its just better

Hey! You mentioned gaming wont be good on UTM, but what about low end gaming? (ie old titles, low demand games like BattleBit)

Technically, you can open 3-D editing software, but it will be very slow ☺️ it’s better to use parallels for high demanding 3-D apps

i only wanted parallels of gaming and i got fortnite but it gots a 1275 error and stumble guys say your interner core something does not support so thats why parallel sucks all a wanted was to play games :C

Hi, thanks so much for this vid. Just have a question. Is UTM enough for runing microsoft office apps especially excel and PowerPoint, I just miss the alt shortcuts in windows and I'm stuck with mac mini m1 baseline.

UTM does not have graphics acceleration so it's not intended for gaming - only for basic apps usage :)

I'm not a fan of vscode for C# and C++ development on my mac. I typically have to go to my Windows machine when working on these languages, but I would prefer to use my mac because of the absence of heating and long battery life (my Dell XPS 13 doesn't last long anymore unfortunately). I've been trying to figure out how to install Windows 11 on my mac so i can use my Visual Studio Enterprise on it. Looks like I'll have to go for Parallels

Thanks for the input. I am in a similar position, now evaluating Parallels for Visual Studio, after having tried UTM with Visual Studio and Win 11ARM. VS in UTM seems slow, was it your experience as well?

I just find UTM last week, it works great, I use few app on W11, not game playing. Parallets charges every time they update, it sucks.

Are you sure about they charge when updating? I thought they had a yearly subscription fee?

8:11 Correction on price. The standard edition is $99. Not per year. Other editions like the pro and business editions are yearly subscriptions. That said, you can choose to upgrade to the latest version every year but is offered at a cheaper price. Sometimes you don’t have to upgrade and continue using an older version until it no longer supports the latest guest operating systems.

to be able to play PC games or use Windows apps you have to use a virtualization software like Parallels or UTM. So you cannot delete it and play GTA V :)

can you move UTM to SSD drive?

Hi, unfortunately not :( UTM does not offer the possibility to move the VM to an external drive

No it is possible. Right click on each VM then select move option. After that select the destination.

Shame UTM does not work on older system like Mojave on a2009 Imac - if we can't afford new software we certainly can't afford brand new macs either. was going to ask if it is possible to port a parallels windows install to UTM but as UTM won't install then I won't bother

I am running Ventura and windows 11 on two unsupported iMacs. That being the 2013 and 2015 4k iMac. Use opencore for macOS and boot camp for windows

Hi, since UTM is a free open-source software I don't think they should be ashamed of something :) I think since not a lot of users are using older Macs they decided to stop supporting older macOS versions. It's a normal thing. Unfortunately, that is how it works in the IT world. If you want to use newer software you need to have a newer macOS. All in all 2009 iMac is and 14-year-old device.

never said they should be ashamed I just just it was a shame it did not work on my mac as I can use the software yes a 2009 Imac is fourteen years old but as I also said not all of us can afford to update to £3,000 new macs so are using hardware that still works, keeping it out of landfill

@@ryomensukuna6628 well it's not up to you to tell anyone where they should or should not be but... bootcamp limits you to ONE OS at a time. you either have mac os OR windows. using parallels etc. you can share files between both OS's

12:57 Wait! Why does Parallel and UTM render colors so differently?! It's almost as if UTM has a restricted color space, with no contrast whatsoever. I mean, it's quite jarring when you see how the Desktop and icons are different.

For just a small software whisky is better Runs notepad ++ flawlessly (kinda)

Utm is better bc it can run x86 on m1
