Free Video Lecture | Rutger Bregman | Is Civilization Simply a Veneer? | GREAT MINDS

Are humans good or evil? Humanity has been grappling with this question for centuries. Many throughout history have suggested that humans are inherently selfish. However, 34-year-old historian Rutger Bregman takes on a different view of human nature. Bregman says that humans are intrinsically good and are able to cooperate and achieve solidarity through that nature.

Bregman combs through the documents of early literature and experiments that define human nature as selfish and upends the misguided notions that we’ve never questioned. He says that authorities and the press have been concealing humanity’s goodness, pointing out how deeply internalized the negative perspective toward human nature is.
He explains to us how humankind’s self-domestication, survival of the friendliest, and the Bastoy prison, which houses brutal criminals but has the lowest recidivism rate in the world, can show us the basic good in humanity. Bregman also suggests that we must establish a new perspective on this topic in order to have a better future.

I have been reading your book, but I have to wonder if you understood Dawkins at all. He does not claim that humans are selfish, he claims that GENES are selfish - and even them not on purpose. It is an allegory that even Dawkins regrets. You haven't read his book or at least you haven't understood it. See, many times it is in an individual gene's interest to turn its carrier altruistic altruistic in order to the gene to propagate through altruistic processes. Even here there is no underlying egoistic thinking to be detected. Just natural automatic, statistical processes.

I don't agree with him. Living in Pakistan gives me a perspective, which absolutely aligns with basics of veneer theory.

Debatablely any & every person one doesn't intimately or significantly know- is a type of " theoretical person". I would agree from my life experience that their are indeed significant amounts of people who carry only a veneer of civility or humanity, yet my life experience also has shown me their are people who are genuinely orderly & fair by nature, and unless forced by unspeakable circumstances or the extreme acts of others, the naturally orderly & fair type of people wouldn't willfully resort to or devolve into degeneracy or barbarism at the drop of a hat. Yet I respect your perspective, I only add mine here with aim of presenting the potential
