Free Solo Climbing With A Parachute - Dean Potter
Спорт
Dean Potter died on May 16th, 2015 in a wingsuit accident in Yosemite Valley. For two decades he was the de facto leader of the Yosemite monkeys, and was a pioneer in what he called "the dark arts" -- free solo and speed climbing, BASE jumping and wingsuit flying, and highlining. Dean combined his pursuits to conceive the idea of FreeBASE - free solo climbing up tall, overhanging walls, with a BASE jumping parachute on his back for a marginal degree of safety should he fall. One of the world's first freeBASE climbs was this 2008 ascent of The Rostrum, with The Alien Roof finish (5.12). At the time, it was the hardest long free solo ever done in Yosemite. This is a remastered and extended cut of Dean's historic climb.

When the news of dean potter and ueli steck’s death came out, it was really both shocking and unsurprising at the same time. They choose some of the already incredibly deadly sports, and decided they are not deadly enough. BASE jumping, free soloing, free basing, free high lining. I don’t think there is a single deadly sports dean haven’t tried or done.. and ueli going some of the most deadly mountains and speed soloing. RIP to both of them.

I’m gonna get booed for this but free soloing is the dumbest idea ever. Hight bouldering is bad enough but climbing over 12 meters or around that means if you fall your dead. Oops I just lost my life dagnabit!

@@carsonwood2095 The dumbest is, to live in fear and to not live your dreams. What looks dumb to you might be the purpose of someone else. @fanzhang5568

@@Yendori. freesoloing is the ultimate “freeing” experience. Total control of yourself, complete confidence in your own ability, and without any burden (ropes, gear, partner, just you and the rock). Most freesoloists do it for that experience, and they would try to control as much as they could, attempts grade significantly lower than their ability, avoid lose rocks etc. That’s what made dean’s free basing so outrageous, he would go on climbs that he is not 100% comfortably or in control, the parachute if anything makes it much more dangerous. Free solo is a extremely small group of rock climbing, only the most seasoned and mentally prepared climbers ever even attempt it.

I can relate to this a lot. It inspired me. Today I walked up three flights of stairs free solo. It was kinda scary at times and I almost grab the hand rail. But fortunately I caught my balance and made it all the way. The descent, to be honest was more athletically challenging. I'm really not trying to brag here. But I'm damn proud of myself. But seriously folks, I have endless admiration and pride for Mr. Potter. RIP Good Brother!

It’s not just him that died but a large number of other people who were part of that scene in the Aughts in Yosemite Valley are either dead or were severely injured. Now they didn’t all die climbing but they all shared a penchant for extreme activities that shortened their lives. I think at some point you have to wonder if it isn’t a mental deficiency if you can’t stop taking extreme risks, year after year. There are lots of extremely difficult things you can do without risking your life. Potter was pushing it on all fronts not just climbing but doing dangerous high lines, “freebase” alpine climbing and ever more dangerous base and wing suit activities. In another video he admits that can’t stop and “doesn’t feel alive” without these activities.
@migarcanjomor
5 ай бұрын
İ mean... İ don't know about a mental deficiency. İ think of it as an approach to life. To people like him, and other extreme athletes it's the only way to live. To be facing death at all times. Once you start doing it, it's the only thing that makes sense. İ do believe that to live without fear, or actually, constantly facing and overcoming the fear of dying, it's one of the truest forms of being alive
@mattk2370
5 ай бұрын
It's an exhilarating feeling. For people who already have a high tolerance to fear and excitement, extreme sports can become an addiction. That further increases the baseline fear tolerance and they need to continue to push it. I would assume some people in these sports also suffer from depression. They use these extreme activities as a form of self medication. They'd rather risk everything, pushing themselves to their limit doing something they love. To deprive themselves of this, may not feel like a life worth living. On top of that, they also have fans who see them as some of the best in the world. This becomes their career and consumes their lives. I think there are numerous factors that play into this. Evolutionarily this could also be seen as a necessary trait. In hunting, the high risk high reward tradeoffs would allow these hunters to either be massively successful or die trying. It must have worked frequently enough to allow this same brain wiring to still exist today.
So incredibly polite "Could you move your feet please? Thank you." Talk about grace under pressure.

Really love the concept and admire this video! But hear me out REALLY QUICKLY-- if you freebase, you need to be completely aware that your parachute may not save you. Especially if you're not high enough, which you should have at least ~1,500 feet before deploying. You can obviously still deploy it from a lower altitude and it will help but you'll most likely break your legs, get seriously injured, or most likely die, depending on where you land. At most climbing altitudes (who climbs over a thousand feet without a rope besides the legends? :P), a parachute will not give you enough time to safely land, but is an awesome innovation in what is already a super dangerous free-solo hobby. editing that my point being my hope is freebase climbers do not think they are safe simply because they have a parachute, and because of that false security, compromise their climbing position. Unless they are trained and falling from exceptional height WITH a lot of mountain terrain isolation and prominence to compensate their descent angle. Worst case ALWAYS kick off the wall if you know you're going to fall while freebasing. Parachutes take 2-3 seconds to deploy, and when moving at terminal velocity that's 600-800ft. It takes around 12 seconds of falling to reach terminal velocity, so you can do the math -- Actually I'll help, the equation accounting for fall acceleration would be: v = v₀ + gt = 0 + 9.80665 *(8) = 78.45 m/s. or 257 ft/s. --- --- [sidenote: 8 is what we're using for the seconds falling until we reach the ground variable; we are using the number 8 for this equation to reach 78.45m/s, but you can change 8 to any other number to get your new m/s calculation] Be safe my fellow climbers! Enjoy a long life. You don't need a friendly stranger to remind you that your next climb is more important than your current. :)

I have seen as low as 100 ft jump altitude with a BASE parachute with meshed vents in the lower part of the canopy (slider down, obviously). But if you were climbing and falling backwards you’d need more altitude. But not that much more. However, falling backwards and deploying instantly might make you eg. want to reverse pack the parachute. But, a better idea would be to find a place to traverse into a high altitude climb, so you would never be in a lethal fall zone.

Excellent, He is using a parachute on his back!!!! I wouldn't have had that great idea😅👍🏻
Free solo means no ropes no nothing. Still my deepest respect and admiration
Too bad he died a couple of years ago in that wingsuit accident.The world needs more people like him...He'll always be a legend in my book !!! Mad respect !!! Climbing with no safety gear is impressive, but I saw a documentary in which he walks a slackline with no safety gear hundreds of meters above the ground.Dean had nerves of steel

Undoubtedly one of the greats of climbing. There's a sad irony that having survived free climbing for twenty years, he added a parachute for safety then perished in a wing suit accident. RIP Sir.
This is hair raising..keep holding my breathe seeing him clinging onto the rock face it's an amazing feat not everyone are courageous enough to do that..safe climbing,take care bro

Just watching this makes me so anxious my heart is racing just watching it wow
He was epic, a pioneer, and paid the pioneer’s price. I agree, the parachute was “marginal “ in terms of safety and more of a mental device; one could hit outcrops on the way down before deploying the chute, even then parachuting into likely treacherous terrain.
