Vectorworks is definitely not open source and only free of charge for students. When that license expires you will have to buy a very expensive license, if you want to keep using it. From 2024 onwards there is only the option to lease/hire it (for more than $200 per month). The option to buy a lifetime license will end after december 2023.

Thanks for sharing. All this software is great, most notably blender, which has come a long way in the past couple of years and is having an impact on the 3d industry. However there is a distinct difference between software for architecture and software for architectural visualisation. As an architect, a key part of any software is the ability to produce actual printable drawings that would be at the standard needed for client presentation, submission for approvals then construction documents. Key being the ease at which these can be made and the level of control over graphic style. The amount that the Construction industry spends on software yearly via subscriptions, it would be great if the industry could work with the blender institution to have a genuine industry leading software that is openBim and opensource.

Can you share the tools you currently use to make architectural drawings? I'm a developer and maybe we can start an initiative for a Blender Addon with which you can export floor plans based on the model and vice versa.

@@novaria HI, the software that I currently use is Revit, Autocad and Sketchup. Revit becoming the Industry standard for BIM. The key here is not about making a 3d modeller only as Architects need an integrated software that can produce Construction Documents, Schedules etc.

@@novaria the Only open source solution I have seen is Freecad, this does have an architects workbench and technical drawing addon, I will need to explore this further.

So I'm one of those self searchers. I find cool subjects and master them. Thank you internet! I also thank people like yourself for guiding people into fields they'd otherwise struggle to enter. What would you say is the best software for beginners testing the waters?

I've tested most of them in day to day architectural work. Only Blender proved itself (about 6 years back it wasn't that great either but since then it improved A LOT), and SketchUp being passable. I'm actually disappointed we don't have a good open source cad by now. Loving the concept of open source software, but for now, sadly, payed solutions.

I'm looking to create a floor plan for a garage/shop and add a room or two. Do you know any website that is free I can use without having to download or sign in? I only need it for one-time use to see what it would look like. Every site I find seems like they want me to download or login.

Attention all developers, I believe I speak for the majority of non professionals: we want software we can purchase inexpensively and download and run on our computers. We will not, repeat, WILL NOT use anything that: 1. requires an account, 2. requires using on the web, or 3. requires a monthly charge.

Solid Edge is a free desktop CAD program by Siemens. Rhino is commercial, but affordable ($1000,-) in my opinion.

Where are the links to these add-ons?

And right off the bat you start talking about something with a trial version. You can produce videos, but apparently you cant produce an accurate video title. Someday this should be illegal. Maybe it already is, because if you're monetized it could be a form of fraud or false advertising.

The following is a review of some of the software mentioned in this video. 6. Smart Draw. This one works well, but despite what is said in the video, it is NOT COMPLETELY FREE. You get a free trial of a few weeks, after which you are required to pay by the month. 5. Sketch Up You cannot download this, but are forced to use it online. Annoying, right? I found this one very cumbersome and difficult to use. The camera views for 3D viewing were very problematic. 3. Free Cad. This one simply does not work. It failed to load on one PC. On the other PC, it loaded, but then crashed when any attempt was made to use it. Both the computers I used in this test are multi-core Dell PCs, 3.0 GHz processors, 16 GB RAM, and Windows operating system. These are the only ones I have tested; I will update this comment as I continue to test the others.

Wow

Nice collection of (free) 3d modeling and rendering software. Not all of them really suitable for typical architectural needs! E.G. sculptris is a sculpting tool nice for 3d modeling fine detail organic models with sculpting tools - not typically used in architectural design. Also Blender is a nice general purpose modeler and renderer with lots of features and also capable of doing architectural design, but not specially made for that. You should definetly change the title to be more precise.

My Virtual Home is abandoned, it aldo isn`t free or open source. It does not have a free version.

Sketchup is not free or open source. But there is a very basic web version that you can use it.

There is a catch for any software that has a paid for....with a free side.... You can't print

The video cites both open source AND free software. Some programs have both free and paid versions.

This video should be updated, for example, smartdraw is not completely free, its highly limited on its demo and for full use you need to pay a subscription, either someone didn't research this properly or you've used fillers with false info to make the video longer
