I use Sketchup very often at work, it's great for architecture as you can model solid objects with millimetric precision really fast, but it's actually trash for anything else. Its performance is the worst of all 3D software, once a scene gets big the program just can't handle it. Anyway, being able to draw lines like it's CAD makes it very intuitive and easy to use.

I work in archvis. please stop using sketchup. we have to remodel everything because the triangulation is terrible, normals completely random. If you optimize overlapping points parts of the model just disappear. Sketchup also generates coplanar surfaces “front color” for 2 sided materials and everything ends up on a zero layer. Sketchup is fine if you don’t export, if you do the import it’s a complete mess.

How is this even a comparison?. If you're an architect or any related field that uses measurement all the time, it's best for you to use sketchup or 3dsmax since they compliment well with autocad. If you're an animator or digital artists or just a hubbyist use blender or maya. Those two softwares are for different fields. It's better for you to compare Blender and Maya, or 3ds Max and Sketchup.

I struggled with Sketchup for a long time. Unintuitive user interface, very limited and no render engine. Then an apprentice showed me Blender. Blender takes a little getting used to. But it's obvious: the program can do so much that it's not done with a few toy buttons. The feature set is epic. Small consolation for beginners: You don't have to know much in Blender to build good images or simple animations. But if you have the time and the desire to learn, you can create incredible worlds with it! It's pointless to compare the two programs: Sketchup is too expensive for the features, Blender is free and offers more than enough possibilities to make a living.

I actually find Sketchup to be MUCH LESS intuitive and inscrutable than Blender when it comes to modeling or troubleshooting at the mesh level. And like others have alluded to, good luck when you start getting into the thousands of polygons or more. Don't get me started on the "always model on layer zero" BS and the trouble you can get into if you forget to. Unless you have a very specific CAD or archviz use case requiring exact dimensions, Blender is superior, IMO, even for archviz that is more about inspiration than precision. Also, and this is very subjective, I just find Blender more FUN to model with!

@@petrapatia6395 Where do you see me scoffing? I loved SU and spent countless hours learning it and trying to make it my go-to DCC tool. But in the long run, I found it more difficult to work with than Blender. It's not about whether you "think in mesh" - SU models are built with meshes just like in Blender, so you're going to be dealing with them whatever app you use. And problems inevitably creep into those meshes. The difference is that mesh-level issues are more difficult to troubleshoot and fix in SU than in Blender, imo.

8:21 You are mistaken, a lack of intuitivity does not make a program more advanced or give it a larger feature set. A lack of intuitively makes a program non intuitive, period, mic drop. Even the most feature rich and advanced applications can be made intuitive given an intuitive gui, of course this depends on both the gui developer and the user being aware of the processes and steps involved in whatever it is the user of the application expects the application to do. Blender suffers from a lack of both when it comes to inexperienced users. The Blender community likes to only blame new users unfamiliarity with the application for the interface being non intuitive, but the truth is the gui is, in fact, very non intuitive and only recently has begun to see improvements.

it doesn't really matter how much potential a tool has if it takes you a lifetime to learn. Blender is only easy to use if you're someone who already knows how to use it. The program started out as one of the most unintuitive and complicated programs to learn, and that remains to be the case despite it's advancements. This is primarily because it's development and user base simply don't believe newcomers when they say it's difficult. Many quality of life improvements for navigation and process efficiency are only available as paid for extensions to the point of nullifying the "free use" variable. It's personally quite amusing to hear blender users call sketchup's tools 'bare minimum' or 'simplistic' since that correctly implies that blender is inefficient at those same commands, and indeed it seems strange that for a program with 'limitless' potential, blender still cant match that efficiency, click for click, which is, imo, a very serious flaw. I say all this not at a knock on the video but to express my continued frustration as someone who's tried to learn blender on multiple occasions after mastering sketchup, and as someone who would love to have access to blender's advanced features with the same intuitive mental flow that is possible in sketchup. The goal seems wide open for blender to feature sketchup's efficient modeling toolset, but that will never happen if blender devs & users continue believing that blender is already the pinnacle, and that the rest of us just need to 'get good'.
