FREE Acting Lesson: Acting Is The Ability To REACT

Cliche or not... Acting is REACTING. Find out what that means.

"The Heller Approach" is an acting technique that gives actors a simple yet practical and solid foundation so that actors are ready and empowered with reliable and easily accessible tools to work in any medium. The technique and its application are based on muscle memory and not on past personal experiences.
The amazing technique is born from working actors and directors. It truly frees the artist to access feelings and thoughts that are universal to all humans, helping actors to create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
"The Heller Approach" is taught exclusively by Brad Heller, a working actor, director, and acting coach. Group classes are available every Wednesday night and Tuesday days in Los Angeles, California. Private lessons are also available via Skype, Zoom, or in person.
Professor Heller taught for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own acting studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, who was an original member of the Group Theater, which was the nucleus of Acting in the United States. Richardson's fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the Group Theatre students who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about." He directed over 800 television shows in his time.
Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world's finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson's acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis and lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

    Me in real life: ROBOT then cuz i choose my words and think too much! Thanks for the great advice, u just changed my life. I always thought people think of what to say.. and I did so, but the reactions of people freaked me out every time, and I ask my self, what am I doing wrong and u just gave me the answer: In real life we react, not think of how the moment should be!

    Absolutely helpful, it's been a long time I have been thinking what I am lacking when I act, well... I just realized it has been Reality and how we make it look real, the way we react and don't just say the lines like a robot... I would like to thank Mr. Heller for this amazing video!

    I've never had a good acting teacher that was willing to sit down with me and really teach me what acting was all about. I use to worry about how to say lines correctly and I felt like a robot while acting. I even almost lost my love for it. The information in this video really makes me feel like a shroud has been lifted from my eyes. Now when I act I really feel like a character again! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it for free. I watched this before I had an audition and though I didn't get the lead role, I got a great supporting role in a web series! :) Please keep coming out with more videos. I love this tip! As a dancer getting into acting I have also had that said to me in the studio and it is the most frustrating note ever!! It's a horrible note because it doesn't offer any solution , process or vocabulary that will help you to " just be." Thank you for saying the word react and receive! This makes so much sense!

    my question would be, how do you react when you have A script in your hands telling you specific dialog to use? Unless I can read the script then, get the idea of the script then create my own dialog based on the words from the script.

  • @mawangshallhang

    Reacting isn't just based on the dialog. You can use the dialog in many ways with pauses and certain pronunciation, your own energy and emotion. That's what he means.

    This is a fascinating lesson! I should have looked up acting to figure out how to interact with humans earlier. lol (I do that flaw, of just speaking my line, but in rl conversation, I'm not an actor in any way. *Laughs*) Do you, or will you make, a video that goes more into depth on how exactly one reacts to people? Oh, and do you have a video about how to use your voice? (My voice is REALLY monotone and emotionless, it's kinda bad.) I need to check your other videos. ^^

    love this. it's sooo true. I see amateur actors or beginners TRY to act. it's hard to watch. What's worse is that they have teachers who encourage them more just to get that Lesson money. Acting school is just like any college. it's better to study it for yourself then trust an unhonest teacher who only cares about the check clearing

    This is great ! Fantastic teaching, very psychological. Your inputs can be applied for music performing too. I face the audience and interact with them. They react to my playing and give me energy and this for and backward influences the performance. So with each audience there is another energy. The hard part. For me it was not every evening possible to get in that mood without ""help" (pills/alcohol) and many musicians and actors suffer from that. Did you find a natural/healthy way to release your mind without any substances ? Some mental exercises or meditation techniques ?

    As training I try to pay attention to what grabs my attention when I'm in the mood out in public. I do this so that, with my ears perked, if anything spikes my senses, I can react to it and proceed to live. Now that I watch and type this little exercise out I am thinking about how these reactions in reality alter the rest of my time in public. I also like to read out loud in public so that gets a little quirky too. But a guy moving his ears is already weird enough, haha.

    believability is is essential in playing comedy ("the cake") the "Icing" is technique.Technique is: where is the set-up and where is the punch? Technique is the energy required to deliver what the writers have spent hours and hours perfecting.(see Seinfeld-the vocal and physical energy of Jason A, Michael R. etc). Being yourself, not trying to be funny, and having the technique on top of that will help you in comic acting. ..you're welcome

    Very good. I have volunteered to teach acting to a young bunch. I'm going to use your lessons for my classes. By the way, I'm acting in a indie movie right now and that thing you said about Anthony Hopkins is something I did the other night at a shoot. All I was doing was trying to define the character a little more by the way he ends certain sentences. I didn't really think about it being a technique. I play a badass in the film, by the way. ; )

I'll will be going to some auditions for another musical and another straight play next time and I wonder if you have any tips about reacting and memorizing my lines during cold reading and also my character development for a show I'm cast in?

    Great tips, I would love to know how I can condition myself to actually feel like receiving the other person while not focusing on what my next line is? Does this only comes down to being off book? What exercises can I do at home to practice?

    +darkitachi50 , Thank you for your kind words and support to the channel! When you are off book it allows you much more freedom. When you are receiving you want to be thinking your objective... not about your lines. I hope this helps. For me, it's about familiarity with the script. That means I continually run my lines. In my mind when I'm alone, out loud when I'm alone. Like the tennis strokes, it's a sort of muscle memory. Once I get so comfortable with my lines I don't have to worry if I know them, I can let go of the lines and it allows me to be more present.

    You're saying that in order to be able to react you need to know the lines and you need to know the objective, right? But if that's all I need to know then wouldn't I just react the way me as a person would react? I mean, wouldn't I have to sort of get into the character first and then react through the point of view of the character and not of my own one?

  • @thehellerapproach

    @thehellerapproach

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, That's a great question. Often times you will have to do a cold read in an audition, leaving you no time to learn the lines. However, you still need to do a quick analysis of the scene and figure out the point of the scene, objective, and emotion. When you do have time to learn the lines, it is highly recommended. When you can be completely off book, and you don't have to think about the lines, it gives you so much more freedom in your scene. Also, something to keep in mind is that you are not playing yourself, you are playing a character. You're reactions would be based off of what that character is thinking and feeling. I hope that briefly answers your question. If you are interested in any training; group classes, online lessons, or private lessons please check out our website www.thehellerapproach.com Brad Heller, can answer your question a lot more thoroughly during your lessons. Sincerely, Admissions

    Hi there, Thank you for your support to the channel! This is a common thing that happens with actors. When you are receiving and in truly the moment, it can cause you to forget a line, which means that you need to learn them even more. Brad Heller once said, "you need to know your lines enough that if an earthquake happened, you should be able to pick up the scene right where you left off." Hi there, Thank you for your support to the channel! Being in the scene is being present in the moment, while receiving your scene partner. Brad, I've got a important question to ask.. I feel that I get more and more control over the "let go" technique, so when I'm acting I see Filip Hjalmarsson on the screen not my character. How should I do to change this? Very thankful for answer.

  • @thehellerapproach

    @thehellerapproach

    9 жыл бұрын

    Filip Hjalmarsson When we let go in a scene, we do not think about 'letting go'. This is a mistake that many actors make. It is like watching yourself to see if you are letting go. The more you are in the moment and receiving your scene partner, and not thinking of anything, the more honest the work becomes. I believe that if you truly prepare your work, and receive your scene partner in the moment, you will not experience some of the problems you are having. I hope this helps!

    ...and if you want to take it one step even further, is not the ball or the opponent that's causing you to react, IT'S YOURSELF. Your opponent's movements and shots are a result of your presence there, the need for you to be defeated in this case, so, in a sense you create that cause and its reason for being, therefore, you might want to direct it in the most convenient direction for yourself before it even happens. Let me put it into simple words, when a player serves, depending on skill's level, he/she in theory, should be able to decide his/her opponent's faith, a weak hit on the ball might give the opponent an opportunity to react and the the ball is no longer in your hands, you no longer are in control, in the other hand, a hard hitting of the ball might end the interaction between you and your opponent right then and there before your opponent even has a chance to react. At the end of the day, it all depends on how long you want to play for (in either game). Cheers!
