Born in America in 1931, Frederic Raphael is a writer who moved to England as a boy. He was educated at Charterhouse School and was a Major Scholar in Classics at St John's College, Cambridge. His articles and book reviews appear in a number of newspapers and magazines, including the "Los Angeles Times" and "The Sunday Times". He has published more than twenty novels, the best-known being the semi-autobiographical The "Glittering Prizes" (1976). In 1965 Raphael won an Oscar for the screenplay for the movie "Darling", and two years later received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for "Two for the Road". In 1999, he published "Eyes Wide Open", a memoir of his collaboration with the director Stanley Kubrick on the screenplay of "Eyes Wide Shut", Kubrick's final movie. Raphael lives in France and England and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1964.

Actually and just imho, I've always thought Raphael is quite funny, with a rare sense of humor. He uses plenty of jabs at Kubrick who has a reputation that can handle it. Raphael would poke fun at his own mother if she wasn't looking, or drinking, again, just imho.
He was staff photographer for Look Magazine.
Fascinating comments from a distinguished writer.
He's a little full of himself, and unfairly attacks people who are not around to defend themselves... but I still found him quite interesting. I saw several of the 144 individual videos of this marathon interview and rather enjoyed his anecdotes, slanted though they may have been.
It is entirely possible that Kubrick's apparent paranoia regarding covert/confidential info (even if completely fabricated) was due to his own personal involvement with other more substantial conspiracies (ie. Apollo moon missions).
People should really lay off of this guy. I love Kubrick's work, but one shouldn't dismiss someone else's remarks on the grounds that they're unflattering. Frankly, I'm inclined to believe Frederic Raphael's account of Kubrick. Also, LOVED his impersonation of Kubrick's voice. LOL.

You are? i worked for Stanley for 1 year and i think i know more about Stanley than this Frederick Raphael....and most of what he does say on video is not true. stew fmj crew.

i feel so bad for kubrick for having to work with frederic raphel.

this guy rocks, sounds just like stanley's kinda guy lol. too clever, super productive, cuts like a knife. inspiring.
FR wrote the screenplay for TWO FOR THE ROAD(1967), my favorite film w/ Audrey Hepburn & Albert Finney. It's a bittersweet dramady on a 10 year marriage, that jumps back-and-forth in time. If you've never seen it, see it. If you've seen it, see it again. It's more than worth the journey.

Stanley knew how to use peoples shortcomings for gold. And he used his pretentiousness against him. Doesn’t seem like a horrible guy though.
Oh wow, he really zinged Kubrick but saying all he needs is pen and paper to create. Yeah, Stanley used big film crews and expensive equipment to make films like 2001 and Dr. Strangelove. What has this tool done with his awesome notepad?

Won an Oscar and a BAFTA, written one of the greatest love stories ever made, nominated for another Oscar and BAFTA... what have YOU done?
I wasn't sure if I should buy his book on Kubrick, and then I watched this video... And I am not going to buy it. Not because it has a negative view on Kubrick, cannot care less, but rather I found him jealous, bitter, and disingenuous.

How long was full metal jacket shot for, as you can tell a huge Kubrick fan. The 18 hours of the making of full metal jacket, sis it ever get released???.

@@brachema Matthew was on the film for 2 years..i did 1 year....one of the longest shoots in history..overtaken by EWS.....the last part about Vivian's documentary.....i know as much as you..all i will say is i remember Vivian shooting it....and what a lovely lady too...like the Kubrick family. @@brachema Not many ppl met Stanley...have to say.....the thing is his IQ was 200 too......the only thing i could have done and did'nt was play him at chess.....i could go on for hours.....it will be in my book sometime too...although i def would have lost at chess.stew fmj crew.
