David’ visits the tranquil setting at Olana, Hudson River painter Frederic Church’s Persian-inspired home in upstate New York. The Hudson River Painters, considered the first American school of painting, were profoundly influenced by European traditions, especially the Ideal Italian landscapes of Claude Lorrain. They were popular from 1825 to 1875 and gave Americans their pictorial sense of national identity.
Church designed Olana's stunning landscape over many years to incorporate the timeless aesthetic of the romantic landscape tradition found in 17th century paintings by landscape greats Claude and Poussin and in the famous parks designed created by Frederick Law Olmstead, including Central Park and Boston Commons. In David’s painting demonstration overlooking Church's famous view of the Hudson River, he will experiment with this historic motif and offer various techniques to create different types of foliage and the river in the distance.
David then works with his talented fellow artist Lynn Franklin-Henry on the grounds of Olana and discusses her oil painting. Please note that Lynn gave her consent to David for the discussion about her painting and for David's comments in paint on the actual painting. Thanks as always. I think of bright yellow appearing often in Church / Cole paintings. Was there perhaps a new pigment available to them?
