I don't get the tree ring calculation. The rings tell you how old the tree was when it was cut down, not when it was cut down, surely??

Freddy missed the age correction on the tree, it could be 15+ years older than the rings 6ft up would indicate.

Softwood pines like that will put on more than 1 ring a year. That tree is likely under 60 years old. Not a very big or old pine tree at all. Counting rings is quite inaccurate. The tree girth and height plus the size of it's root structure is a much better way to determine a tree's age.

The first gold mining reality tv show i watched was based off like.... pastors that moved to alaska to mine for gold, and they pretty much threw away all the gold they had because they didnt know they had to put those mats on the sluice boxes. So it baffles me as well

The reason these guys fail is because they don't understand mining 101. They don't know how to prospect, they cant read ground, they cant do geology, they don't have the sense to check the spray bar in the trommel (its been squirting in the wrong direction since 1921 ffs), the don't have the sense to pan the ground they are sluicing, they don't check their tailings for excessive dirt, fine gold riffles for clogging up and they sluice with dirty water. I could train a 10 yr old to do a better job.
