Fred the Friendly Raccoon - Part 4

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Fred is by far the tamest wild raccoon we've ever encountered. He's amazingly gentle and sweet as well as incredibly adorable! Click "Like" if you agree. Could it be possible that a wild raccoon can be born to be so tame or might Fred be someone's secret pet they let out once a month for a brief while? He's certainly captivated us as well as stolen our hearts!
NOTE to commenters: Fred lives in a region where there hasn't been a case of raccoon rabies for over 25 years which is tracked and verified by the State's Public Health Dept.
We are fortunate to be able to observe a variety of wildlife since we reside next to a protected preserve where raccoons are one of the many animals consider it home. We hope you will also enjoy watching this video of the close encounter of our charming furry friends.
Please note Fred is not our pet and is a wild raccoon thus please follow your local wildlife guidelines for the safety of humans and animal wildlife alike.
Additional note: I'm very well aware of the dangers of interacting with wild animals since I professionally work with a variety of dangerous wild species. No children nor pets are ever harmed, especially the wild animals captured in these videos.

We hope Fred never encounters any "bad" humans too and there are plenty of those humans who dislike his kind. :( If all raccoons could be just like Fred, perhaps the public's perception would change; wishful thinking, but it's a nice thought. Thank you for having a look at one of our raccoon videos as well as giving us an opportunity to read what you've shared.

Becky, you & your friend are very fortunate to be able to have a raccoon become a part of your family. Unfortunately for us, it's illegal to possess native wildlife in Washington State. However, we feel quite privileged to be able to enjoy the company - even if it's for a few minutes on occasion - from our wild friends such as Fred. We look forward to seeing them whenever they happen to stop by. Thanks for commenting & sharing how wonderful these little coonies can be as a family companion.

I believe all these vids of Fred. When I was little, we had a pretty friendly raccoon that used to come to our back door pretty much every night. The cats knew him, he knew our cats, none of them were afraid of the other. They'd all just sort of hang out on the back porch. I don't think he was friendly to the point of letting anyone touch him, but he never caused a problem, and whatever food we gave him he was very neat with and washed it off in the pool. His name was Rocky. Where I live now, there's a raccoon that rummages through our recycle bin. I've walked past him a few times...he just sits there and stares, I say hello, and let him do his thing. Again, the cat isn't scared, he's not afraid of the cat. It's no big deal!

I always wonder what wild animals think when they are in situations like this racoon, and the person is petting them. Do they think; "Wow, that massage feels really good...this is heaven!" Or do they think: "WTF lady? What are you doing to my hands?! MY HANDS! Ok Fred...you need this food...let her molest your hands, just stay cool...omg it's so gross that she's touching my hands! I hope none of the guys back at the tree find out..."

Well, considering a lot of mammals enjoy getting pet because it feels like grooming to them, I wouldn't be surprised if Fred finds the petting soothing. I remember watching a video of a man petting a wild and obviously frightened opossum, and gradually throughout the video the opossum seemed to calm down and didn't try to stop the man from petting it.

It is refreshing to see someone with your experience and background posting a cute video like this. The fact that you are aware of the risks associated with interacting with wildlife makes a huge difference--otherwise it might be cheesy. You show that, though wild, some individuals have learned to trust people, provided the person knows what to do and what not to do.

These little fellas are so adorable they are very hard to resist. Way back in time my oldest brother worked on the oil rigs off the coast of Louisiana. As he was coming off his tour of duty he & a friend came across 3 orohanes baby raccoons. They were quite small and he knew they wouldn't survive so he brought them home. We had so much fun playing with them but as they got older they became to be somewhat aggressive. Everyone assumed they were going thru puberty and wanted to be out in the wild to mingle with the rest of the raccoos out in the woods nearby so they let them loose. We probably did more harm than good which I regret.

Many of us learn to be better through our past mistakes from our well meaning intentions. Raccoons have a long maternal period in their first year of life. They will remain with their mother for up to nine months, sometimes longer if they're born later into the season. Their mother teaches them how to properly forage and stay safe if she does a good job. Your brother was their substitute mom and did the best he could at the time. Those youngsters at least had a chance at life had he not intervened.

Very cool! We have a raccoon family (mom and 3 kids) who have been coming by several times a week for the past 8 months or so to get food from us. We have gotten to the point of being able to sit with them and pet the backs of the kids while they eat. We haven't tried to pet the mom yet. They really are very gentle and sweet, but we try to never forget that they are wild animals.

So awesome the relationship you formed so cute. I used 2 feed a racoon a neighbor had as a pet then he moved and let her go she was so big I was afraid she would kill my pets and the other neighbor had a bigger problem he loved cats had them in his house and fed the strays. They'd keep having baby's but that racoon would not hurt them she was pregnant and made a home for herself and new family in his attic. She would never go very far just 2 get some kittyfood when he put the bowels out 4 like 10 or more cats. I watched her and shed come down at nightfall. we had a pool above ground with a screen house around it well she took a dip in that. I started feeding her peanut butter sometimes jelly 2 sandwiches she waited for me and a bowel full of water. I think it was mean 4 who had her as a pet to just release her. She depended on me and my neighbor. She probably had 2 liters of raccoons. Its was cute watching them grow. But the neighbor I believe set a trap and took her away. Some of her babies ran wild I believe they may had killed some cats. Its sad. but people shouldn't do this to a wild animal they are depending on that human. I probably could of pet her she always tried to approach me . but I said hey take these sandwiches. and shed dip them in the water and eat them They are very clean when they eat. I'd talk to her and shed come down while her babies looked on. I gave her left overs too. my dog didn't like one bit of it. She was a awesome entertaining racoon

  • @WeeklyWhiskers

    @WeeklyWhiskers

    5 жыл бұрын

Leslie Williams , how truly disappointing for your neighbour to release their pet raccoon into the wild. Raccoons require a long maternal period of up to a year. The babies are taught how to properly forage and stay away from danger by their mother. Pet raccoons never acquire these survival skills so they depend on humans to avoid starvation. What’s even more sad was to read your account that she possibly was trapped and relocated which increases the odds of her starving to death. This is just tragic and is why we discourage people from taking a wild animal to keep as a pet. They require commitment for their lifetime. Failing to do so only ensures death for them.

Once when I discovered some young raccoons trapped in a dumpster, I opened the lid and put a tree branch into it for them to climb out. The three youngest climbed out and quickly fled, but the oldest, instead of fleeing came over to me and bowed its head before leaving.

Thank you for the compliment! We're honoured to meet a raccoon like Fred. His fur is fuzzy soft with a coarse-like texture of a husky puppy. We have friends who have pet raccoons in N. America & overseas. Everyone has said the very same thing: They're an enormous responsibility to properly care for them so that they live an emotionally enriching life. They do have tantrums & can cause some serious injuries to their human caretakers.

We rescued and rehabbed him and he knew we were not a threat nor ever put him in a position to feel frightened.

While we wish we didn't need to include the disclaimers in all of our videos, we feel it has to be necessary so people don't make the mistake believing that wild raccoons are safe to touch as most are not unless one knows what they're doing. Even that doesn't guarantee anything as wild animals can be unpredictably dangerous.

Wow, he doesn't even seem agitated by you giving him rubs. I expected petting under the chest area and the paws quite a dare. Animals are usually protective of those area's, as that's where they're most vunerable. He must feel pretty safe around you~ amazing...

Fred has been friendly from the first time he visited in November 2012. We wrote more about why he's this way in the description in Part 1. Part 14 shows that he's even friendly without the presence of food.

Thank you! Fred eats a variety of food: chicken, eggs, fruits, veggies but his favourite is dog food which is most suitable for an animal who has an omnivorous diet.

I just don't understand how people have this hatred towards raccoons. They have such strong characters that half of Disney cartoon characters are picked up straight from raccoons! They are gorgeous, they are hyper social and they are so huggable with their fluffy fur. I recommend all raccoon lovers to participate on petitions that want to see a ban on fur trade. Not only from raccoon fur, but all animals. Raccoons however are very much affected by the legal fur trade in the world and in North America. The fucking Kardashian family, Usher, Pharrel Williams, Beyonce, they all promote fur wear. Act on behalf of raccoons and other animals suffering under horrible torture Boycott these artists and make you voice heard for the sake of animals in need!

I know right, I hate how humans can be so cruel to animals.. and killing them looking straight into their cute little faces. It's just so brutal

There's no shortage of shitty, ignorant people who can't respect all forms of wildlife/nature. Just means the people who do need to stand up for them and be pro-active and some way :)

I'd say the problem stems from the fact that people don't make their homes wild animal-proof in the first place. They do something to their home that attracts the animal and, when the animal causes damage to their home, they blame the animal, as if the animal just woke up and decided to fuck with their lives for no reason. It's sad but that's how it goes unfortunately...

MrAspiringactor You are wrong! It's about people like you missing a crucial part in the brain that helps them feel empathy. These are called subhumans, or imbeciles..

god, it's so cute. so freaking cute. is he soft? i bet he's really soft. it's so nice of you to feed him. maybe you're one of his stops on a month-long repeating cycle to find food? like maybe he visits different houses where he's met nice, awesome people like you and just suckers everyone out of food with his dashing good looks. LOL. i bet that's exactly what happens.

It appears to be true that Fred's hungry, however he's unusually friendly/tame unlike the others who've visited us who are no where even remotely as friendly yet are quite as hungry. :D Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts with us.

Thanks Roger, we couldn't agree more. Raccoons are constantly listening as well as looking for any potential conflict with either another raccoon or animal. We can never see what he's looking at, but have to trust he knows what he's looking for to ensure his survival.
