My brothers girlfriend once left a random burnt disc at our place back in ‘07. It had ‘TBS Louder Now’ written on it. I’d never even heard of Taking Back Sunday. That album changed my life. The song structures. The production. Heart wrenching moments in tracks like Miami and My Blue Heaven to the aggression in Error Operator and Spin. I missed the boat with TBS’s early punk/pop stuff and to be honest - all follow ups to Louder Now just haven’t hit the mark. Fred’s influence at that time is undeniable. And as Valentine said - Rubano’s playing is immaculate. It’s a shame to discover there was tension in the band during this era but at least one of the best ever rock albums came out of it.

You guys made some big shockwaves. Just remembering how your musics impacted my teenage and young adult years almost brings a tear to my eye. I'm from Brazil and trust me, every person who did give a listen (and understood the english lyrics given we speak portuguese) just up and loved everything about the music. We just carried all these lyrics, riffs and confessions on our chests. I know a band is an organism and many members are responsible for many nuances, but there's something in this special era that's so unique it never clicked again for me the way these songs did. All my regards to both you and Matt!

Tell All Your Friends was the first record I heard by TBS when I first started high school, but WYWTB and Louder Now were the two records that really got me into music outside of radio hits by random pop bands. They opened up a whole new world to me and essentially turned me into a full-blown “emo” 😂 They also came at a really dark time in my life (a series of family deaths and a house fire; unlucky, I know 😅), and by listening to them, I was distracted from my real world troubles as well as guided to look inward and discover things about myself including who I was and what I wanted to do with my future. Because of this, I can safely say that without that band, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now I’m an aspiring musician and I’ve been practicing multiple instruments including guitar, piano, and ukulele, bass, and drums, along with poetry/lyricism for the past year now when I’m not doing college work. It was that rotation of TBS, MCR, and FOB which shaped me into the person I am now, so thank you Fred and Matt for contributing a ton to my personal development and opening me up to a whole new interest in the art of music. You were the butterfly effect that kickstarted my world.

All these videos are so great Fred. When I was 14 and still a beginner musician I would take my copy of Where You Want To Be to my guitar lessons and my teacher would help me transcribe and play all of the tunes. Learnt that album basically back to front! Really important for my formative years. I went and did Music school and education and teach music full time now at a secondary school :)

WYWTB came out the summer before my senior year of high school, I'm 33 now. I had started to fall in love with TBS from TAYF, but the first time hearing you and Adam's vocals together, I was blown away. WYWTB is still my favorite TBS album, I picked up and listened to it front to back about a week ago. Still know all of the lyrics. Crazy time traveling experience. Thanks for this interview and thanks for all you do Fred. So much love.

I seen TBS for every tour after you and Matt joined. I must say, you guys were the best thing that ever happened to that band, as well as killing it live! While it's cool the original lineup got back together, "I haven't been happier, not since."

This was awesome! I still lament the fact that you guys weren't able to stay on and make more music together, I do love all TBS records but Where you want to be and Louder Now were really special records. Fred's backing vocals sometimes only a subtle difference, but other times just stood out and really made it a new sound that seemed to work even better than John's. Regardless I love it all but you guys made some awesome music together.

Great conversation. A great point made by Matt that resonated with me - about being in a band with and sharing something that's meaningful to all of you - Years really can go by, with little to no contact, but you always feel a bond, that comes right back to life. I remember a while ago bumping into a former band mate from like 7 years ago - we'd toured in tiny vans, slept on recording studio floors, got paid in gas money, sweated out an EP we loved that didn't get heard enough etc. As we finished chatting, he said something along the lines of 'Just remember, we did SOMETHING, we really did something back then'. And i was thinking, fuck yeah we did - it's nice to share such a bond.
