Fred Astaire - I Won't Dance, from Roberta

Фильм және анимация

Here's the full "I Won't Dance" number from "Roberta."
It starts with Fred playing what earlier in the film he calls "dirty piano."
And how about Ginger in that dress! Wow!

What a legend. Pulling off technically difficult moves left and right, back to back with the biggest grin on his face. I've never seen a Fred Astaire video in which he didn't look like he was having the time of his life. His dedication and passion for his talent is enviable, but mostly infectious. I smile like an idiot every time I watch this video.

I always found Fred very attractive in a slightly offbeat way. His smile..those. eyelashes not to mention his palpable charisma. Then I could go on about those magical feet and that delightful way with a song. He was certainly one-of'a-kind. I fell in love with him as a child and still am today...many years later. Unique talent.

I keep coming back to this video...I'm a piano player and I don't think there's been a greater entertainer in the performing arts ever. He dances and plays the piano the same way, with apparent abandon and without fear. And what is left is utter joy in performing...

My jaw dropped when I saw Fred play that whole "hot" piano chorus! I knew he played several instruments as a kid, but had no idea he had such great piano chops, which were obviously overshadowed by his other talents. You can see the guys in the band openly admiring him. To be a singing/dancing star of that magnitude, and still care about playing an instrument-that's impressive musicality. I can't help thinking that videos like this may have a positive influence on young people, and encourage them to play music themselves. After suffering through a decades-long blight of electronica, there may be hope for us yet! :?)

@@Ellimir true; according to his book he met Gershwin when the latter was working as a 'song-plugger' at the music publisher Remick's. By Fred's own account, they would mess around at the piano and George was fascinated by Fred's 'slap-out left hand' technique, often telling him 'wait Freddie, play that bit again!' He could apparently also play the accordion, and was a song-writer in his own right who had a song in the top 40 hit parade. Also danced :)

This movie is cool because it actually used the live sound of the dancing. Usually Hermes Pan and Fred would post-dub the sound of the tapping. Fred wanted to experiment and that's why they use that hardened wood stage to dance on.

He was such a talented guy! I have no doubt that was really him playing the piano. He could play drums too. I read his autobiography, "Steps in Time", and he mentioned playing piano even as a child in vaudeville on the stage when he toured with his sister pre-Hollywood. You just don't find many multi-talented people like this any more, which is very sad. I've listened to and read many interviews from people who knew him that said he was a very shy, humble, and sweet guy. He was a perfectionist, yes, and could be a real task master. But he was never a jerk about it. He wouldn't push anyone else but himself. Ginger Rogers was just as much of a perfectionist, so that's one of the reasons their movies together are so awesome!

One of their best. The great opening on the piano, the fun duet, the tap dance on real hardwood, only time. Ginger picked dress. It's a fun movie and made them top stars, tons of charm. Ginger in her time quite the figure and comedy and acting and dance skill set, especially for that era. Fred we all know master of all from drums to piano to vocals to choreography to tap to dance to acting, he's the top if the pile, miss having those two around.

"FEELthy" Piano. Not dirty. This may be my favorite of all his solo dances, and I know that's saying a lot. Many others were far more stylish, ambitious, and visually innovative. But this is just flat-out great tapdancing, when he was still young enough to do stuff he had to finesse more as his legs aged. It's syncopated dancing. It always makes me laugh out loud to watch it. You never know which he's going to go next. You feel like he's even surprising himself, even though of course he always knows exactly what he's doing, and has rehearsed it many times. He somehow keeps that feeling of freshness and spontaneity. And of course it begins with him doing a syncopated piano number. Dancing first with his fingers, then with his feet. And at the very end of the film, with Ginger, to the same tune, as an encore. They knew by then what people were coming to see these movies for. And applauding in the theater after every dance. I've done it myself, at revival houses, and I was never the only one.

  • @rolandangler

Fred always insisted on minimum editing and as much footage in full shot as possible. This ensures that the dance is viewed properly. Modern cinema and TV directors seem to think that editing a shot every couple of seconds is necessary, but it isn't when real talent is at work as here.

Think of what you're losing By constantly refusing To dance with me You'd be the idol of France with me And yet you stand there and shake your foolish head rheumatically While I wait here so ecstatically You just look and say emphatically Not this season, there's a reason I won't dance, don't ask me I won't dance, don't ask me I won't dance madame with you My heart won't let my feet do things that they should do You know what, you're lovely So what? I'm lovely But oh, what you do to me I'm like an ocean wave that's bumped on the shore I feel so absolutely stumped on the floor Ah, but when you dance you're charming and you're gentle Especially when you do The Continental But this feeling isn't purely mental For heaven rest us I'm not asbestos And that's why I won't dance, why should I? I won't dance, how could I? I won't dance, merci beaucoup I know that music leads the way to romance And if I hold you in my arms, I won't dance

Fred Astaire met my other hero George Gershwin when he (Gershwin) was a piano pounder in Tin Pan Alley and they were friends for life. The planets aligned.
