Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD - The Review You’ve Been Waiting For

Спорт

We have had the Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD for several months in our garage. We've put it through workouts, tests, and everything we could think of to put together the most detailed review we could.
I was lucky enough to be a tester of the pre-production model of the Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD, back when it was just the Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper Extension. With my 5’6 155lb wife as well as myself at 6’0 and 260lbs (and occasionally my 6 year old daughter), we’ve used it, abused it, moved it around, blasted a near 500lb hip thrust on it, and tried just about anything you’d reasonably do with it (and some unreasonable things).
And today we share our thoughts to bring you the most comprehensive review possible.

And yeah, reverse hypers were never my thing. Low back work for me, is counter productive. But I know enough people who SWEAR it fixed their problems to know it makes sense for a lot of people. @@GrayMatterLifting mostly I just don’t do the movements this enables and don’t have space currently. I miss doing back extensions and GHRs, but they’re not a super high priority for me. I love my Westside Scout reverse hyper so to really consider a combo unit like this, it would have to replace that machine and the reverse hyper is definitely the weakest part of this. I have some things coming that will let me try out nordics and back extensions with zero extra space taken up. Maybe if those become a staple, I’d reconsider.

    Great and in depth review, thanks very much. I ordered one recently shipping is always a killer but a birthday present to myself. I am in my mid 60's have virtually a full gym in a small rental it's hell at time trying to train in cramped space moving and shuffling gear around. I have a dedicated roman chair sit up / hyper extension bench from the 90's it extends out pretty much 5 feet still in great condition though it cost way back then about $400AUD + an angled sit up bench. I have trained most of my years in Martial Arts but also fitness of course. So, for me now my physical training has changed this little unit will give me more room and extend my exercise regime, to a serviceable level. As for the wobbles really what can you expect from a small compact unit set on a central bar at adjustable angles supporting a movable human form? I presume it is a fitness unit for strengthening & improving the body. Not really a body building or powerlifting device? I watched a video by Alexander Bromley before this one, he used the term "The Most Versatile Home Gym Equipment (Minimalist Budget Setup)" Keeping this in mind is the reason I am purchasing this unit on 4 payments! 🙄 Considering what we pay for many other items in life these days the price is not really that exorbitant in my mind. Anyways I am hoping it will last and is as good as it seems. Apologies if my comment was a bit lengthy. 😅 P.S. That front pin and bar is a little concerning.

We've got a small space that I'm constantly moving things around, so I get it. This fits right in, and helps get the job done for sure on a LOT of movements we weren't previously doing. So far, with daily use by multiple athletes, it is holding up well and we are at the 6 month mark. So I'm hoping we'll see this bad boy rocking for years to come.

  • @GrayMatterLifting

    Kind of. It's super wide in an awkward way, and very low to the ground. So it really isn't designed to be a bench. Could you technically use it that way? Sure. Would I recommend it? Only if you had no bench, were a smaller athlete in general, and only planned to use dumbbells.

    The reverse hyper of this is so unfortunate but then again you gotta sacrifice something with all this modularity. Might be a good shout to get this as well as the cheap rogue reverse hyper thats like $350 but for the price of that you could also get a BoS reverse hammer 🤔 Given that hypothetical situations where you could only have the freak athlete and the rogue, or the BoS reverse hammer, which set up would you go for?

  • @GrayMatterLifting

    @GrayMatterLifting

    5 ай бұрын

    I personally don't like reverse hypers. And I don't have floor space for a dedicated piece like the BoS. So that's an easy decision for me. But if that is an exercise you'd like to incorporate, I think it depends on the weight you are moving and how you prioritize those exercises. The Scout gets a lot of great feedback but doesn't handle a lot of weight, so your progressions could be limited. The BoS reverse hammer is going to be the BEST reverse hyper solution there. But you forgo back extensions and Nordics AND you have a dedicated floor space to it.

    @@ShawnFumo I haven't checked that out. But I think you the statement is close to the same. The Scout Hyper is a moveable unit, the Hammer is not. To me, that is a huge decision making factor for a lot of people.

    Hi! The small changes we have made in addition to the colored knobs were: -Added handle at the top for easier adjusting of the back extension frame -Built in step-rod that now folds so it doesn't get in the way during back extensions -The back extension pads now slide together so you no longer need the sit-up pad I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

    There’s also the Nordic Back Ext V2 from Tib Bar Guy that looks promising. Nordic and back extensions with regressions, and similar to this, a pad moves to the front for hip thrusts. So basically no decline or GHD pad is the difference but cheaper and less complicated. Still thinking I may go with the Freak Athlete machine, but definitely tempted since TBG has a pretty good reputation for quality.

    This is just a wobbly amazon, wal mart piece of equipment. No way a man is doing a hip thrust on this without it sliding back the whole time, you conveniently left that out. I dont know you but was interested in seeing if you are honest or just another paid influencer,, see I know all about this piece and I tested you to see if you would recommend it and what you said. From my OBJECTIVE NON PAID OPINION no man over 150 lbs should even think about buying it. It is a wobbly novelty piece for small people I bet you never bring this piece out of the closet again but hey you got free stuff which is what influencers are about. You at tour weight ain't using this and if you are I feel sorry for you, that you wont buy a good piece and are living of freebies

I just used this piece this morning. And yesterday... and the day before. We use it damn near daily. I'm getting VERY close to a flat Nordic Curl by using the regressions of it. My wife does back extensions nearly every week. Hope you have a wonderful day, try and get that chip off your shoulder my friend.
