FRAY BENTOS PIE: Trying Meat Pies Cooked in a Tin. Unexpected Result!

In this video I try Fray Bentos Pies cooked in a tin. These are not something I usually eat but I thought the concept was interesting so I gave them a try. The fillings I try in this video are Steak and Kidney, Just Chicken and Cheese and Onion. Although I know there are other flavours available such as All Day Breakfast, Steak and Gravy, Chicken Curry and so on.
As you will see I was pleasantly surprised by some of them so I may have to try more next time.

Me and my dog, Henry, came back from a winter walk cold, damp and starving. I put two Fray Bentos s/kidney in oven for our tea. Half an hour later, paradise on a plate. Henry nearly ate his dish too. Not fine dining but a helluva comfort food when you're knackered.

Last time I had a Fray Bentos meat pie was 30 years ago (my eating habits have changed). But I still remember them with with considerable affection. Perhaps because I had the same misconception when I opened the tin. They are delicious. There is no two ways about it. Meat pies may not be exactly healthy but Oh My God!

Glad to see someone gave these a fair review. I feel like too many food channels just judge them because they're in a can. They're honestly not that bad, and I love that unique under pastry they have.

I remember having these occasionally when I was much younger (well over 50 years ago) and at that time I recall them being quite tasty & meaty. A few years ago I noticed them in the supermarket & they seemed amazingly cheap, I thought of my youthful good memories, and wondered if they could possibly taste any good for such a low price. It was tasty for sure, but mainly gravy with very little meat - being realistic that’s about all one can expect at such a price now. My trip down that particular memory lane is highly likely to remain a one time thing & I doubt I’d do a repeat, but I suppose if you’re on a very tight budget it might fit the bill.

I grew up on Fray Bentos Pies. Being a latch key kid, because both my parents worked, I had to learn some kitchen skills or starve and Fray Bentos Pies were a great place to start. I loved them. Quick, tasty and extremely good. I used to boil some frozen peas and have those with the pies. Next time I'm back in the UK, I shall make sure I run out and buy one.

It was just as I remembered them. Delicious. But do take the whole pie out of the tin, Use a fish slice or very broad bladed knife. So much nicer on a plate with some vegs.

I'm stunned to see anybody praise the meat content in these pies. I had one last year - I was craving that nostalgia kick of my childhood and skint unemployed days - and I was absolutely disgusted by how few solid pieces there were: 2 tiny pieces of kidney and only 4 or 5 small pieces of chewy 'steak'. I swear they must include gravy as 'meat content'. Forget the photo on the tin: no product realistically represents the contents on the packaging, but the amount of meat in the photo is about the total I got inside the whole pie. Fortunately for me, I love the undercooked pastry, so it was saved from being a written complaint by that alone. Utterly deceptive & overpriced. For the same money you could buy the raw ingredients and make several better pies.

One of the best "prepper foods" you can buy! Fray Bentos is actually a sea port in South America, where the majority of corned beef comes from. "Fray Bentos" means 'Friar Benedict' in English. Don't worry, you're unfamiliarity to these pies is strictly down to your age, I was bought up in the 1970s where these were a dinner time staple!! I've eaten one that's Been 3 years out of date and it was fine. I'll usually throw a baked potato in with one as the cook time is the same!

My dad, much to mum's disgust( she was an excellent cook) loved these pies. He wrote to Fray Bentos to complain though. He said they weren't big enough .They sent him a box full of them .He chomped his way through them ,enjoying them all more for getting them free. The reason why the cheese and onion is rank is because of the flour they'll add to make the filling stretch.I wouldn't touch any of them .

Who'd have thought a video on Fray Bentos tinned pies would be on KZread. Ha! These tinned pies have been around forever, since I was a kid at least in the 60s, I absolutely love them, they're gorgeous. I've only ever had the steak and kidney one's though. I used to have one now and then as a kid. I still love them but I find they make work cooking them, they make a mess of the oven too much for me to bother with them now. I've also never eaten one from the tin, have always had them on a plate before. Getting them out of the tin when cooked and hot, is awkward for me also, so I don't bother with them, unfortunately. I was told of a guy my partner knew years ago, who tried to cook one of these without removing the lid, ooops! Bang!

Man I wish we had more British style meat pies in America. I love meat pies so much! Whenever I am in the UK, meat pies are pretty much all I eat. The closest I can get here in the States is Marie Callender's frozen beef pot pie which isn't quite the same. Chicken pot pie is a thing here, but is rather regional to the South and also not the same. People say British food is bad, but I say that is a stereotype. I love British food.

Haven't seen them around for a very long time. I was always wary biting into a meat pie, as I really do not like gristle, etc., but they were very tasty. Tinned pies are what they are. I used to remove the pastry and cook it separately so that all the pastry had a chance to crisp otherwise sometimes the underneath was a bit too soggy. The filling I warmed in a saucepan and served both with instant mash and beans! Shame there isn't so much meat now but it's still tasty and excellent in the emergency store.

Fray Bentos pies were one of my staples for years. The best is undoubtedly Steak And Ale and in recent years they launched a chicken curry-type that's pretty damned good. They could be acquired cheaply for a long time, but eventually the elastic on the supermarket price point snapped and they got suddenly pricier. I had to ease up on these pies anyway as part of losing some weight - and now I walk past them longingly!
