Very nice video, thanks. A great topic. I’m also shifting to smaller watches simply because there are scenarios when I want the watch to disappear on my wrist and not call attention to itself. Outdoor activities like hiking, long-term camping, etc., and even in dress occasions I’m focusing on what I’m doing and simply need my watch to tell me the time. Watches that are large enough to catch on sweaters and jackets or backpacks become a hassle. The new Baltic Hermatique and Nevada Gretchen Antarctic are interesting to me. My desire for a particular style or size of watch is heavily dependent on my activity. Thanks for the discussion.

I’ve found that the ratio of the diameter to the lug-to-lug is a very good indicator of how a watch will fit on your wrist. Then it’s just a matter of trying lots of watches with different ratios to see which one you prefer the most.

Couldn't agree more - you need to get a watch on wrist to see if it 'works' for you. Size is just one of many factors, I am also now size agnostic. Great work gentlemen.

At this point in my watch collecting journey, I completely ignore the case diameter spec in general. There are way too many variables with the watch… diameter, lug-to-lug, height, style, shape, material, vintage, etc… and way too many variables with me… use-case, outfit, price, if you care about other people’s opinions or not, even personal tastes change over time. This hobby is emotional. Forget the specs: if you like it, wear it!

The watch industry as a whole is obligated to make sure watch size (and style) constanlty changes so they can keep selling watches. Trend down..trend up, trend down ...up...tweak here, there.. Rinse,repeat

Great convo, guys. Can I just add that a person's overall build also matters. How a person dresses also matters to making a watch fit.

case size doesn't say much, it's more about proportions: Case size, dial size, bezel yes or no, style VS body presence and wrist/hand size. Just try it on the wrist like you guys say, ohh and RJ I drive a BMW3 Compact, love it 😉

Very well discussed guys. All sorts of things can affect the "appearance" of a watch, diameter, height, shape and lug to lug as mentioned in this video but also the colour and how far the lugs drape. The last bit for me was from experience where on paper and in initial comments on the dimensions were on about lug to lug is way too long on (insert watch model here). This was talking about a watch that I owned that I found perfectly comfortable as the lugs draped around the wrist. So I have to agree with the message here and that's try the watch on and ignore the specs, If it works for you that's great and if not no one is forcing you to make that purchase.

I’d also say it’s important to take someone who knows you well with you when you try on a watch. They can tell you what suits you. Size is irrelevant. All watches are different and suit different people for different reasons. 😊

I definitely think smaller for dresses and larger for tool (besides exp 36). My DJ is a 36 and my grand seiko sbgw287 is a 37.3 and those are perfect sizes for more elegant dressier pieces. My pro is 39mm, SMP300M is 42, and iwc pilots chronograph is a 41 and are all tool watch sizes. The lug to lug is a big factor too. I dont like having any lug overhang in dress pieces but dont mind it on my tool watches.

"Fiddy" is 47mm, purchased in 2002 for 7k, sold for 20k in 2012 😊

I don’t know how it is now, but ar the end of the 90s a lot of collectors bought a lot of smaller 34-35 vintage omega’s.

18.5cm is a relatively large wrist? Looks at my 21cm wrist! I still favour 42mm watches and under though. 39mm is my preferred size but I don't mind the Speedy at 42mm - it wears a bit smaller because the bezel makes the dial appear smaller.

I own a range from 38-41mm. For me, that is my sweet spot 😊

Any size could work - you have to try the watch and also you have to look in a mirror from a meter or two. If you want to be on the safe side with a “blind” online order, just go for 39 to 41 mm for round watches (36-38 mm for square watches), adding/subtracting 1 mm if you are a large/small guy. In this way you minimize the risk of a size mismatch.

Lug to lug is just as important when talking about watch size in terms of “perfect” size.

Providing wrist width would be more helpful than wrist diameter due to roundness and flatness.

34-42mm anything below of above has always been small or large since the 60s

I have a breitling colt 44 mm and a omega Aqua Terra 38mm and 1/2 a dozen in between 42mm 43mm they all wear great due to lug to lug and thickness especially my new speedy at only 47mm lug to lug but I just could not get on with a Tudor gmt 41mm I think due to how thick it was and the weight of the head .. I have 7 inch wrists

Surprised no one mentioned: China. Yes, they’ll buy bigger Rolexes - but as investments. Of course as their RE and banking bubbles get ready to burst using them as the barometer might not be a wise long term strategy.

I think you can have three guys with 7.5” wrists, but all three can have different sized forearms and hands. Wrist size can’t be the end all.

Everyone uses the Sopranos reference , but That character, all of those Characters represented New Jersey Italian American mobsters who invariably are / were considered to have very tacky, gaudy style at best. The tackiest. And wardrobe specialist on that show chose fashion and accessories to capture that. You need to find another example. 😂

My problem is, the watches that are probably the perfect size for me, I think look too small because I am so used to wearing larger watches.

In my experience, if you stick with a smaller, maybe more fitting watch, a few days, you'll get so used to it..not just size, also comfort wise and than coming back to a bigger watch will be strange..of course it depends on the style of the watch..for my 7"wrist 36-38mm dress and 38-40mm diver is the sweet spot..lug to lug is also very important and the female endlinks on the bracelets work wonders..

As you say, the numbers don't tell the whole story. I have a 41mm Sinn 105 St Sa UTC and a 41mm Seamaster 2255.80. The Omega looks perfect, and the Sinn looks small. My conclusion is that color affects size perception, as well. The Sinn bezel is black, and the Omega is polished stainless.

Regarding Thomas' "Bigger is worse"... That certainly holds true if you have a movement of certain size in lignes that was designed for a 34-36mm case, and then you develop a whoppingly large watch of 38-42mm around that, and you see small seconds sitting under the central axis, and you have a date that's just lost in the middle of the dial. Even Patek is guilty of jumbo size calatrava's with obviously too small movements inside. It looks cheap and ugly, to my eyes. Longines certainly has screwed this up for many years under the Swatch corporation. I don't care what size watch you design, as long as you develop a movement that actually fits the casing. Lastly, 50-55" is really the maximum TV size I should have in my current living room. Don't look at the TV size in relation to the store. Look at your room and the viewing distance. Likewise, look at your wrist, and not at the market. Buy what is comfortable.

Someone on KZread ( name? The great Frederico.) said that bus loads of Asian ( PC?) people would turn up at his New York shop and want the smaller sized watches and he would ay, ' no, they 're ladies watches'. So the potential buyers left empty wristed.His boss told him,' they're unisex sizes'.

Stop following trends and wear what you like.

Im really tired of scrawny limp wristed guys pressuring watch makers to make all watches smaller.
