Franken-Furnace: 100 F What Would YOU Do For Air Conditioning

Ойын-сауық

This week is 100*F with the forecast for the same weather for the next full week. This is a video to show the extremes we had to go through due to a couple months delay in the supply chain of the brand of equipment my supplier carries. Nothing in this video is normally done in a residential setting...unless its someone like me doing it for a son or daughter.
Backstory: This downstairs system was removed and totally updated with properly sized duct and air handler to satisfy the space last fall. To take care of the second floor a second and separate system was installed in the attic. Fast forward about two months ago. I ordered the outdoor unit and found that there would be a delay in delivery due to the manufacturer cutting production of the current models to 'retool' to begin producing the new line of equipment utilizing the newly developed refrigerant. The supplier did not perceive just how long the 'delay' was to become. With no cooling on the lower level of the home, this hot snap was making the home almost unbearable in the afternoons and evenings. So I cooked up this 'idea'....
In disassembling the old furnace from the duct, I left the refrigeration system fully intact and shifted off the side of the basement to allow the new air handler and duct to be installed. The reason being that the new system will use the same refrigerant, R-410, and leaving the lines connected eliminated the need to seal them from contaminants over the course of the winter. THAT turned out to be a quite fortunate decision to have made.
The video explains the setup, but what we did was connect two systems 'in series', by pumping the cold air generated by the old system into the return air of the new system. At that point the new air handler receives the now 'pressurized' COLD return air and forces it with a bit greater force down the new trunk line to distribute it throughout the first floor of the home. Follow the video to better understand the way the two systems are connected electrically, but it is really simple.
Commercially we have done this with large capacity systems that required a tremendous amount of outdoor 'fresh' air. On one job for example, we took a pair of 50 ton roof top units opened to 100% outdoor air. We slowed the blowers to deliver only 300 cfm per ton to give greater potential for moisture removal. Those were connected to the out door air openings of a a pair of 60 ton (yes, 10 tons larger) roof top units and used the dehumidified outdoor air to enter a mixture of actual return air from inside the building to satisfy the 55* discharge air settings of the larger units. This obviously is a cliff notes version of the way they were controlled, but you get the idea.
So essentially that commercial system was connected as a pair of two units in 'series', very similar to this one. This one in my sons home however, has a lot less controls. There is little to no chance any of you will encounter this or anything resembling this set up but remember: IT IS ONLY TEMPORARY !!! We would not have had to do this had the weather held off for a while yet, but the indoor comfort level was at this point non-existent.

This kind of out of the box thought process is just what I hope to be able to formulate when I need to. I can't claim to have come up with anything quite this impressive but did have a similar idea once. Split system was switched one day to get AC back on then I added new ducts to drop down from the attic to the first floor. At the end tie in the new duct and boom the whole house was cooling. Um except a power surge zapped the new condensers capacitor and then fried the compressor ugh!

Well, it was a good plan you had anyway Andre. That really sux though that the compressor failed after all that. But that's the way it goes sometimes !! On this one, I was so glad that I left the old system intact while waiting until spring to install the new one. No one could foresee the manufacturing delay coming on the horizon though !! Of course it may just be this brand and not industry wide. Being retired, I am really out of the loop now. Thanks for the awesome comment Andre !!

Man, there ain't no end in sight for the heat wave over this way DaveyJO. I heard the forecast saying to expect the same next week . No matter though, we got cool air a blowing through the duct like the wind on a crisp fall day !! Ain't it the devil what a fella just gotta do sometimes to get a good meal !! We kept all our canned goods along with the milk can full of shelled popcorn and the dozens of eggs down in the cellar back in the day. I remember the pint jars of home made grape jelly sealed with pariffin wax poured on top and the homemade ketchup put up in old soda bottles and the canned soup stock too !! My favorite thing was capping the bottles with the hand operated capper !! Oh well, that's in the 'days long gone' category, but I can remember them just like yesterday. Thanks for hanging in there ol' buddy....I'll toast ya'll in the morning with some of the fresh coffee beans the Missus just bought today from a home town coffee bean roaster guy !! Home made ice cream too but not since my white mountain motor plum burnt tup! Have an old hand crank freezer too but the wooden barrel is about had. They want over $200 for a new one! I always made vanilla but peach and coffee a few times. I’m sure I can rig up a motor to the hand crank freezer and make the ice cream like a rock. @@tractorman4461 Sometimes I think we must have some common DNA somewhere in our double helix. I just gave an ancient smithy made cow bell from Switzerland that was from my Granny’s family and passed down all these years to Jenny. Her Moms ancestors are Swedish. Plus the 1840s and St. Louie? And yep, shiny brassy bottle caps with cork gaskets, no plastic back in the cappin days, eh? And like you, I ain’t no jogger but I’d rather get my miles in getting wood or hand planing some boards at my workbench. They ask me at rehab what exercise I do at home and I say in everyday and how I live my life. It’s 300 yards back to the creek from my house and I’ll wonder around for an hour or two just keeping up with the woods and all that’s going on in the real world. Or I’ll check out my Friends at 44 Ranch to see what’s going on in your real world. When you recognize reality, enjoying doing for yourself and family, well you get plenty of good and Loving exercise I’d say. A good sense of humor is just as important to enjoy life and health. I’m not religious but I do believe we are connected to all creation. Discussing religion or politics is pointless, wastes energy and separates people. Why? Helifiknow! Everyone has the right to think and believe what they wish and I hold it against no one. Those who rub me the wrong way I don’t have to be around, nor them me. Too many cool things to enjoy then to mess it up over stupid stuff. Too many things to fix, repair and many people to enjoy. So many great folks out there. I mean I found a great batch of folks that I sip & tip too every morning. Those who’s memories help make them what they are and appreciate all lessons and can see the positive. Sometimes you really have to strain to find any positive in something but this is where experience comes in, our best teacher. Seems our best lessons come from the hardest times, we learn little if any from the best ones. Your mechanical skills have been helped along with a mess of skinned knuckles and by knuckleheads as well,eh? And how very blessed we are in being able to appreciate! Well 410 and the different characteristics made it a bit odd to work with. Anything you become familiar with is going to be the preferred component. We knew R12, 22 and 502's operating pressures and temperatures almost by heart. Now we have so many refrigerants that've flooded the market it boggles the mind. There are good things about 410 though. One being the operating pressure is so high, it almost eliminates the need for 'P' traps in riser and also changes to line size is minimal if needed at all because of the much higher refrigerant velocity and pressure. But I am NOT a fan of 410 in general.
