Frank Walks Episode 7: Don Mattingly presented by BodyArmor

Спорт

For walk 7, I had a chance to walk around Central Park with Don Mattingly. For a generation, Mattingly was the face of the New York Yankees. Playing from 1982-1995, some of the franchise's leanest years, Don Mattingly was the lone stalwart. Don Mattingly served as Yankees captain and was the best player in baseball for a four-year stretch, 1984-1987. He won the American League MVP in 1985 and a batting crown in 1984. A six-time All-Star, Matting won three silver sluggers and nine gold gloves before a back injury curtailed the end of his career. Despite this, many feel that Don Mattingly should be in the Hall of Fame, and momentum for that seems to be growing through the veteran's committee. Since retirement, Mattingly has served as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. He currently is the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.

That is a Yankee living legend that you are walking with right there! It occured to me while watching this that I never really saw Donnie Baseball do an in depth interview ( even though it was mostly Met talk!) before so kudos on getting him Frank! a little upset you didn't know he won "9"!!!! gold gloves as a first baseman though! WAR be damned, Donnie was the best player in the game for nearly 5 years. He is a Hall of Famer!

Bill Buckner has nearly *600* more lifetime hits than Mattingly, 50+ more doubles over the span of his career and stole 183 bases vs. 14 swipes for "Donnie Baseball". The former LA Dodger, Chicago Cub, and Boston Red Sox player won the National League batting title in 1980. Granted, Buckner stuck around considerably longer _(He's one of a relative few to don a major-league uniform in four separate decades hence the unlikely distinction "4 Decade Player")_ than good ol' Don in order to rack up those fairly impressive numbers, however, it must be noted that most of Buckner's production was accomplished _post_ horrendous ankle injury. Buckner's ability to adapt while continuing to maintain a caliber of play deemed MLB worthy is admirable if not remarkable. Mattingly, of course, eclipses Buckner in overall Batting Ave. (by 18 points) as well as in OBP and SLG. They each had *7* *.300+* seasons at the plate with Buckner failing to notch an 8th - coming up just one percentage point short(.299 BA) in 1985 - a season in which he reached base on a hit over 200 times, accumulating 46 doubles and driving in 110 runs in the process. He added 18 steals that year to round out the picture. Again, it's the age-old dilemma : spectacular over the short term / potential left unfulfilled vs. longevity, durability and production over the long haul / ultimately surpassing expectations given a particular set of circumstances
