I recall reading that Frank Miller was a victim of street crime in NYC. I belive he was mugged at either knife or gunpoint. Being rendered powerless in the face of such naked aggression is enough to make anyone want revenge. I was raised in the NYC of the 70's and 80's and in many ways it was the urban wasteland depicted in "Taxi Driver" and "Dark Knight".

Mmmh, when reading your comment, that makes me think that maybe this incident had an impact on Frank Miller over the years, especially concerning his works since the 2000’s…

I appreciated the discussion of Jeanette Kahn here. Someone really needs to do a giant Comics Journal style interview with her.

If you can track down “Back Issue” magazine published by Two Morrows publishing, they dedicated a whole issue to her time at DC and included a lengthy interview as well. I think it’s from 2010 or 2012. Back Issue magazine is great and so was Jeanette Khan

Ah, I love that cover! It really captures the "cartoon'y" aspect of his pencils. I love how it looks badass, but like it could be on "Beavis n Butthead" at the same time.

I just realized Miller gave Daredevil's mentor, Stick, the same gruff, "Listen here, kid" voice he would later give Batman when interacting with Robin. Had Miller gone Hollywood sooner, the result could've been "The Goddamn Mr. Miyagi".

In 1988 i knew about this comic. A chilean comicbook mag included some news about this. Later other comicbooks did the same. Just in 1994 i read a british DKR tpb. Thanks for this video!!!

Good video, guys. I read this article when it came out and I site Miller's conversation about "romance" as "adventure" all the time when talking to others about B:TDK. In my humble opinion, this is where everyone misinterpreted the work. Everyone who read it concentrated on the "Dark" and ignored the "Knight". I adore B:TDK but thanks to that misinterpretation, it screwed up the characterization of Batman (and Joker and Jason Todd and the World's Finest Friendship) for a very very long time and (with a few exceptions) we still haven't quite recovered from it 36 years later.

There is also an excellent Amazing Heroes issue that covers Miller's The Dark Knight Returns while he was still working on it.

Hi guys! Great job! I’m a long time comic book reader and had extreme pleasure to meet Frank back in the fall of 1979! He showed me photocopies of DD pencils/Batman Xmas stories! Frank hit the ground running! Liked Ronin and it wasn’t a failure to me and it opened the door for Dark Knight Returns! Batman really needed a jolt and so did the fan base, and the rest is history! I love independent artists and that’s the reason I’m still reading comics! As I lose interest in marketing corpse events I have to check out indies and that’s the way to be! I definitely plan to check out Red Room because you guys have peaked my curiosity and that’s damn good cool thing! Keep up the great work, guys! Comics needs a kick in the ass to progress! Thanks!

I always love when Jim breaks down the psychosis of batman cause he always makes good points like this dude is not normal and characterizing it as heroic is kinda questionable.
