Go back and watch the Weapon X episode. He goes to town over the cover design of the newest collection...its hilarious.

He's got a few moments in the Wizard reviews. Also hilarious.
I don’t remember who said it but “Once Frank Miller started writing Sin City, he never stopped” is so on point.

I think it was either Linkara from Atop The Fourth Wall or Chris from Comic Tropes.
Jim Rugg getting heated always makes for the best videos.
Look for the “Reverse Kayfabe Effect” on this title.

You guys are a pleasure to listen too, your passion for and expertise in the medium is a delight and you always nail it!
If you thought this was bad check out tom king's run on batman. The repetition was next level.

Hated that run. I was reading it because it was part of rebirth era and I wanted to read everything leading up to Oz Effect, but it was just so bad.
I know this channel is a celebration of the art form, but this video could have easily been 40 minutes long. 🤣
I've never heard Jim so frustrated by a comic. This was hilarious!
Jim went in on this book! This video had me cracking up, but it was a very honest review that I agreed with pretty much 100%. I remember seeing this book for the first time on the stands at my local comic shop. I didn't even know it was coming out, but I picked it up without hesitation since it was a collab between two comic legends. I was never more disappointed. I gave it until issue 3, and I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm just glad this series didn't define either of these two artists' careers.
I think today's marching orders should have been "read better comics."

Real talk lol
Irate Jim Rugg is my spirit animal. I thought his displeasure over the Weapon X cover was bad , but this another level! Hahaha!
My first exposure to this comic was a Wizard end-of-year roundup, where the "I'm the goddamn Batman" scene was awarded Worst Panel Of The Year. I remember reading it, and laughing nonstop for about 5 minutes.
I've been watching you guys for a couple of days now while writing my comic, and the best parts are always when Jim goes full "WHAT IS THIS!?". Gets me every damn time.
Man, I never get tired of this review….lol.
In middle school I remember being so hyped for a Batman comic by my favorite writer and artist. Soon after I lost interest in superheroes.
Came from the live recording to get some Spicy Jim. I was not disappointed. We may need to weaponize this energy 🤯
This is a guilty pleasure of mine. I was disappointed when they didn’t finish the series, it’s a elseworld Batman story not main continuity that’s why I like this unsavory Batman.

It was never finished? I remember there were delays... but now I understand why it was not finished...
Everytime I see Ed's "Red Room" project, I become hopeful that he next applies his astounding craft to "life-affirming" stories like an extremely non-violent romance comic :-)
when jim said "........WHAT IS THIS?????" i felt that LOLLLLL
Jim your rants on this has made my year!!
At the time I thought Miller was doing this project just for the fat paycheck.
This is the funniest episode till date. The rant was so understandable 🤣
Low-key ... One of my favorite Batman comics 😂 Loved Jim's rage 🙌
This book to me is a perfect example of when name equity becomes more important than the product. It was horrible. All Star Batman reads like it was written by a 15-year-old sexually frustrated kid that just got his lunch money stole and thinks well if I were Batman. I see people all the time defend it that its Miller taking the piss out of Batman but there's absolutely zero indication that this is meant to be parody or anything other than serious. And Lee's art is nothing special here. He's a great artist but not a great storyteller. So when I stopped reading coz the writing is bad, then the art doesnt tell a story--leaves me no reason to keep going. The only significant contribution from this comic is making everyone run around saying "I'm the goddamned Batman". And I like angry Jim. We need more angry Jim! Its relatable coz as much as one loves comic books sometimes I think theres an equal amount of hate or frustration when you see things being done wrong or poorly by folks who should know better or be in a position that people around them should speak up.
Wasn’t sure if I misunderstood this series when I first tried to read it. Glad you tried to deconstruct it, and wish it was more rewarding.
Vicki Vale was created in 1948 as a reporter who was trying to prove Bruce Wayne was Batman; I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence by elaborating on where that concept originated in DC. I remember at one point, Bob Kane tried to claim that Vale was modeled on a young Norma Jean Baker, who was later renamed Marilyn Monroe, but you know how Bob Kane liked to stretch the truth (especially regarding Bill Finger’s contributions to the mythos).
The only good thing to come from this book (sad it didn’t gee shown on screen) was the bat cave pull out pages that had Easter eggs and some of the best Jim Lee has ever looked
Jim, your rant on this book is exactly how I felt when this came out. Beautiful art imo, story wise it's trash. All Star Superman on the other hand!

I don't know. I never picked up this comics when it came out. Maybe the price was higher because of the glossy cover and paper? But after reading this review, I am glad I did not. Can we confirm if Miller actually wrote this or just Lee doing Miller?
Jim hating on making a video about this comic, but i bet its going to be one of the most viewed on the channel just for the rant 🤣😂🤣😂 and vicky vales dialogue hahah
God I love your downloads so amazing. I wanted to be doing my own comics until Multiple Sclerosis attacked my body and now I can't draw flies.

So excited to see your discussion on this series. I only bought the first issue when it came out.

Okay... a few minutes in and now I remember why I only bought one issue. lol
I hated this book when I first read it and then years later picking it up again I ended up loving it. It helped that I was able to read all the issues in one go. I actually found it really funny- I think its meant to be one big superhero dark comedy. I also find the closer I get to the age that Miller wrote the books the more I am in sync with the work he wrote. For instance I hated Dark Knight Strikes Back at first but years later loved it and think its some of Millers best work artistically. I still hate the colouring on it though. Back to All Star- whatever you think of this book- this is by far and away Jim Lee's best work hands down. Its like he knew he was finally getting to work with the guy that made him want to draw comics in the first place and so he pulled out all the stops. I just wish they got to finish this.
I remember reading this at like 14 after finishing my dads copies of classic Miller stuff, even then I remember being totally confused by it
I was at a convention where they sold that last issue that was the recalled 'uncensored' version. The editor that was fired over that was there, too. Doing his last assessments of people's artwork for DC. Tore into my work right before he tore into a Subway sandwich. :)
This was so cathartic
Another great video. Could i make a request for a future video? I would to see you guys do a retrospect on jli my favorite 80s comic that featured fantastic artwork by Kevin McGuire and Adam Hughes among others. Keep up the great work guys!
16:19 gotta love Ed’s “really”? Hahahahaha
Thanks for reading these books guys....so I don't have to!
Jim in this video is me every time I crack open Dark Knight Strikes Again. And I agree with the comment on this comic that it should be viewed as satire, it really shows how ridiculous Batman is with the most awesome images. Not really the best idea, but they did it and we have it now. As a Jim Lee fan, and being a kid when this came out, it was a huge inspiration, some of his best artwork in my opinion.

You can also see frank miller go insane in real time between issue 2 and 3
Jim is already heated during the pitch for Street Angel. I love Jim.
This analysis is about as good as you can get with this AS:B&R material. The points Jim raises are the exact criticisms (which for me are legit) that I believe derailed this series and had DC assign Brian Azzarello on writing with Frank on Batman: Master Race. I am amazed that Jim Lee's linework still maintains high quality & in some respects gets better with every issue, despite the degrading writing/plot elements.
Go ahead and thrash the rest of it. I only read the first 3 issues. This was a fun review and hope you will do the rest of the issues.
Fun hearing their thoughts on this! Probably the weirdest collab in history
Just read the first three issues of Street Angel Deadliest Girl Alive, I really enjoyed them. Add to that... I consider the X-Men by Piskor to be the version most satisfying for me. So, you guys are alright by me
I imagine Jim Rugg entering DC offices right now taking names and kicking ass 🤣🤣🤣
That was amazing! Rugg Rage!
Good observation on the hand shadow on the female figure @3:00, that really should have been hatched lines to denote that shadow instead of a solid black.
Great video. This series bummed me out so much for most of the same reasons. You have two top-tier creators working on one of the most recognizable icons in comics and this was the story they wanted to tell? I'm inclined to think Miller wanted to shake up Batman in a fundamental way but just couldn't get there. I like that he was looking at Batman as someone with a severe psychosis, with extreme PTSD. What would a person with almost unlimited resources do if they decided to go out and become a vigilante? I think it looks pretty much like this book, however, there are certainly a lot of unsound choices that make that part of the narrative less impactful when you have sex scenes on the docks or crazy yellow rooms. The humanity gets overshadowed by the absurd gets in the way of the narrative I was looking for. Too bad.
Angry Jim. Love it. I'm imagining him with an Evil Spock goatee.
Jim Rugg unleashing some Berserker Rage in this one 👊
Highly entertaining, boys!
I think it's supposed to be a super ballsy comedy. I read it as an over the top self parody of miller batman and I loved it lol.
Jim in a rage gets on the top rope. So funny.
Awesome review. You really have to wonder what the hell the people responsible for this were thinking.
LOL I think this is the first time I've seen angry Jim!!
When this was coming out I bought it just to witness the train wreck. Every issue baffled me. These days I wouldn't have made it past #1.
Never heard Jim so angry
Haha, the rage of Rugg! I feel you, dude. This series is absolute trash. I think this was at the height of Miller's dark personal life period, and he just decided to shit all over comics for some reason. Very strange. I believe there was little to no editorial interference with this work, so whatever Frank turned in, that's what got published. Holy car crash, Batman!
LMFAO Bro I've watched hella vids of the Kayfabe guys going through comics and this has got to be the first time I've heard Jim get so annoyed and upset while going through something
I love Jim's rant at 7:17. My thoughts exactly.
Jim cuts an epic promo on All Star Batman and Robin.
Some of my favorite jim lee art tho
the Vicky Vale brain parasite theory got me good

That brown page could have been beautiful with colors black canary’s blond hair and some bright complimentary colors colors splashes of violet it’s a super hereo comic where is the four color process and garnish bright color Jim your right abou the colors these are professionals it has to bee better then that

This book made me laugh so much. For everything you said, for how bad and stupid it is, it's so funny to me.
Here for Jim losing it! Yes Jim yes!
Still one my favorite episodes. Jim's passionate point-by-point verbal dismemberment of the very glaring flaws in this book made me an instant convert to the channel.
Jim going from trying to stay calm, to anger, to getting tired of the stupidity of the comic hahah i love it
Damn, Jim cutting promos on this dreck. Priceless.
I remember reading this and feeling ripped off. It took 3 issues for Batman & Robin to get to the Batcave, which should’ve taken an hour at most, but by that time, a milk carton with Graysons picture had already been printed in Metropolis for Superman. My friends and I laughed at how awful it was. Atleast the art was great.
I love when Jim get's pops off!!!!! lol Epic shit!!!!
"this is not what I want to do with this channel" 😂
I’ve always gotten the impression this was a satire. Like it’s obvious Miller isn’t serious with this story. It’s an intentional caricature of Batman. Like I don’t get how you get to the Green Lantern issue and think this is meant to be sincere.
Jim, I had the same visceral reaction when I read this years ago. I was totally confused by how bad it was, like how hard it was trying to be bad without even knowing about it. Baffling. How did this pass the editors table?
Miller should draw all his writing at this point in his career. He is a complete package and when someone else draws his writing its just so damn stupid
@mangalloyd6778

His art is terrible at this stage in his life. Did you see DK3?
The only way I can defend ASB&R is by considering it a completely self-aware parody by Miller of his past work and the reception it's gotten -- in which case it's a very fascinating idea worth a second look. But there are absolutely no interviews or supplementary material where anyone mentions that as the case. It's played completely straight. Contrast with All Star Superman which has a clearly structured, easy-to-follow story, and still there are several interviews where Morrison points out the significance of the themes and references he uses.
Cmon, 9th issue is lots of fun, hahaha!
7:26 Nothing adds more to the tragedy of a child witnessing his parents' death than an ad on the nearest page.
Brilliant! I've been shotgunning these uploads during lockdown and was glad to hear Jim's frustration with this series. Such a mess.
I lost my library card because of this books trade 😂 I rented the book out and forgot to bring it back😂😂
I liked it at the time, even though it was over the top bad. Like the comic book version of The Room, or Trolls 2 and other "so bad they're good" movies.
I bought the absolute edition of this for $2 on clearance when I was working at Barnes & Noble years ago. Wasn’t worth it. Thank you for shredding it the way it deserves.
What's the difference between deadliest girl alive and the smaller hardcover (that's Oop)?
@CartoonistKayfabe
3 жыл бұрын
The smaller hardcover collects all the Street Angel comics up to 2012 (The SLG series and various short stories that appeared in anthologies). Deadliest Girl Alive collects all of the Street Angel comics produced after 2014 - the Image Comics hardcovers, FCBD issue, and some short stories like the Halloween and Xmas Specials. It's full-color. The smaller Oop hardcover is black and white (or pink and purple depending on the printing, there were 2 printings). Together these books collect all the Street Angel comics but there's no overlap between the contents of the two books. - Jim
Ya I can’t say that this is a good book, I like Lee’s art (even if it’s occasionally a mismatch) as the series goes on it just gets more ridiculous to the point of being pretty funny in an absurdist sort of way, my recollection was a friend of mine and I being completely confused as to whether or not this was intentionally or unintentionally funny
Was this before or after Hush?
I honestly thought about buying this. I’m a huge Jim lee fan so this looked really cool. Listening to the story though just made me feel like I lost my humanity. I don’t read books and I don’t usually get mad about gritty stuff but this is just awful
I love this book because it gets more and more absurd.
