Jim went in on this book! This video had me cracking up, but it was a very honest review that I agreed with pretty much 100%. I remember seeing this book for the first time on the stands at my local comic shop. I didn't even know it was coming out, but I picked it up without hesitation since it was a collab between two comic legends. I was never more disappointed. I gave it until issue 3, and I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm just glad this series didn't define either of these two artists' careers.

This book to me is a perfect example of when name equity becomes more important than the product. It was horrible. All Star Batman reads like it was written by a 15-year-old sexually frustrated kid that just got his lunch money stole and thinks well if I were Batman. I see people all the time defend it that its Miller taking the piss out of Batman but there's absolutely zero indication that this is meant to be parody or anything other than serious. And Lee's art is nothing special here. He's a great artist but not a great storyteller. So when I stopped reading coz the writing is bad, then the art doesnt tell a story--leaves me no reason to keep going. The only significant contribution from this comic is making everyone run around saying "I'm the goddamned Batman". And I like angry Jim. We need more angry Jim! Its relatable coz as much as one loves comic books sometimes I think theres an equal amount of hate or frustration when you see things being done wrong or poorly by folks who should know better or be in a position that people around them should speak up.

Vicki Vale was created in 1948 as a reporter who was trying to prove Bruce Wayne was Batman; I won’t insult anyone’s intelligence by elaborating on where that concept originated in DC. I remember at one point, Bob Kane tried to claim that Vale was modeled on a young Norma Jean Baker, who was later renamed Marilyn Monroe, but you know how Bob Kane liked to stretch the truth (especially regarding Bill Finger’s contributions to the mythos).

I hated this book when I first read it and then years later picking it up again I ended up loving it. It helped that I was able to read all the issues in one go. I actually found it really funny- I think its meant to be one big superhero dark comedy. I also find the closer I get to the age that Miller wrote the books the more I am in sync with the work he wrote. For instance I hated Dark Knight Strikes Back at first but years later loved it and think its some of Millers best work artistically. I still hate the colouring on it though. Back to All Star- whatever you think of this book- this is by far and away Jim Lee's best work hands down. Its like he knew he was finally getting to work with the guy that made him want to draw comics in the first place and so he pulled out all the stops. I just wish they got to finish this.

Jim in this video is me every time I crack open Dark Knight Strikes Again. And I agree with the comment on this comic that it should be viewed as satire, it really shows how ridiculous Batman is with the most awesome images. Not really the best idea, but they did it and we have it now. As a Jim Lee fan, and being a kid when this came out, it was a huge inspiration, some of his best artwork in my opinion.

This analysis is about as good as you can get with this AS:B&R material. The points Jim raises are the exact criticisms (which for me are legit) that I believe derailed this series and had DC assign Brian Azzarello on writing with Frank on Batman: Master Race. I am amazed that Jim Lee's linework still maintains high quality & in some respects gets better with every issue, despite the degrading writing/plot elements.

Great video. This series bummed me out so much for most of the same reasons. You have two top-tier creators working on one of the most recognizable icons in comics and this was the story they wanted to tell? I'm inclined to think Miller wanted to shake up Batman in a fundamental way but just couldn't get there. I like that he was looking at Batman as someone with a severe psychosis, with extreme PTSD. What would a person with almost unlimited resources do if they decided to go out and become a vigilante? I think it looks pretty much like this book, however, there are certainly a lot of unsound choices that make that part of the narrative less impactful when you have sex scenes on the docks or crazy yellow rooms. The humanity gets overshadowed by the absurd gets in the way of the narrative I was looking for. Too bad.

The only way I can defend ASB&R is by considering it a completely self-aware parody by Miller of his past work and the reception it's gotten -- in which case it's a very fascinating idea worth a second look. But there are absolutely no interviews or supplementary material where anyone mentions that as the case. It's played completely straight. Contrast with All Star Superman which has a clearly structured, easy-to-follow story, and still there are several interviews where Morrison points out the significance of the themes and references he uses.

The smaller hardcover collects all the Street Angel comics up to 2012 (The SLG series and various short stories that appeared in anthologies). Deadliest Girl Alive collects all of the Street Angel comics produced after 2014 - the Image Comics hardcovers, FCBD issue, and some short stories like the Halloween and Xmas Specials. It's full-color. The smaller Oop hardcover is black and white (or pink and purple depending on the printing, there were 2 printings). Together these books collect all the Street Angel comics but there's no overlap between the contents of the two books. - Jim

I love this book because it gets more and more absurd.
