Frank Gorshin loved movies. He was a theatre usher as a young man, and spent time learning the mannerisms of his film idols. And he was so damn great at it.

Frank was the only Emmy nomination for the entire Batman series for his character of the Riddler. He was a brilliant impressionist and tremendous character actor. His character Cheronian Commissioner Bele for the Star Trek episode “Let This Be Your Last Battlefield” is one of the most memorable aliens from the original series.

If I could see any performer of all time live it would be Frank. Used to watch him on Sullivan. I was amazed that he could just slip into someone else's voice and face like he did. Inspired me to do the same. People tell me "oh you're so good, how do you do that"? But I know that there will only be one Frank Gorshin. Long live the king.

Jerry Lewis cast Frank Gorshin for an interesting, but uncredited, role in Jerry's first movie since the Martin & Lewis breakup, in the 1957 film "The Delicate Delinquent." Frank had a comedic role. This meant that Jerry thought highly of Frank's comedic talents even back then.

Impressionists have the toughest job in comedy, because their performance represses their individuality and in its place offers imitations of others. So their glory when successful is always vulnerable to the criticism it is second-hand. Completely unfair of course because the impressionists must labor long and hard to deliver the essence of a famous personality, and in the process reduce the essence of their victim to a few seconds that, to the audience, says it all about that person. When it's done by the very best, as we see here, the applause is not in response to humor in the conventional sense, but rather is a tribute to the impressionist's insight, with the inevitable result that they penetrate the mystique of some big star. That star's ability to captivate the public will from that moment forward be compromised.
