1966-67 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Batman/RIP Adam West (Vicki!: cast reunion 6/19/94)

As we wind down our look back at the 50th anniversary of the 1966-1967 television season, we remember everyone's favorite from that season - Batman.
With the passing of Adam West this past Friday, June 9, 2017, this tribute takes on a more melancholy tone for us here at Television Vanguard. Adam West was one of the nicest guys in the business. well liked and always a good sport about his iconic role. RIP Mr. West, and thank you.
This clip is the third part of four that we'll be showing here on Television Vanguard. The first and second clips were shown last year on January 12, 2016... the fourth coming momentarily. All four video clips are from the Vicki Lawrence (Vicki!) Show, broadcast in syndication back on June 19, 1994.
This video clip is presented here on KZread for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Enjoy!

I did meet Julie Newmar (Catwoman from "Batman" TV series) in 1985. She was in Houston, TX at the time. A decade later, she made a cameo appearance in Wesley Snipes' film, "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything".

"In Colour of Course!". A whole generation of kids in Australia first experienced American TV programs like Batman, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island, Get Smart, Star Trek TOS, The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family in glorious Black and White. When Colour TV finally arrived in Australia in 1975 we were able to experience them all again in living colour. It was like watching new versions of the same shows even though they were the same shows.

Adam West said in his memoir (Back to the Batcave) that he hated doing reunion shows. Also wanted to point out that Bob Kane's deal with DC Comics required that he, and only he, would be credited for Batman. It's only recently that the credit has been changed to read "Created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger."

The Batman TV show lasted only 3 seasons. However, after ABC cancelled it, NBC was going to take it over and air it on their network. It was all set to go, but some idiot at ABC had already ordered all the sets destroyed. The Batcave, and all of that! Due to the tremendous costs involved in their construction, NBC passed on the deal. But we can only imagine how many more great seasons of Batman we could have had!

After learning what I did about Bob Kane I lost respect for him. He was a glory-hounding megalomaniac in a big-time way! His chiming in saying he takes some credit for the costumes was WAY beyond arrogant!!! Add to this how he screwed over Bill Finger who made Batman what he was and it only makes him even more deplorable. It was only when he was nearing his demise did he say he regretted not giving any credit to Bill Finger after Finger was long gone from this world. It was actually Finger who came up with the look of Batman. Kane had him in a red costume when he first created the character. Yes, Kane created the character of Batman but if it weren't for Finger's ideas for the character, the character of Batman probably would've flopped. Kane owes all of his fame and fortune to Finger who never benefited even a plug nickle. Kane double-crossed Bill Finger and lied about Finger's help with the character of Batman whenever Bill Finger was mentioned to him. To put it succinctly, Bill Kane was NOT a nice man!!!

I think it's unfortunate that Bob Kane has gotten this reputation - most of it only within the past decade or so. While it is true that ghost writers like Bill Finger (Finger being one of the most prolific for Detective Comics in the early days) played a major part in the plots, character developments, and popularity of characters like Batman, I feel that it is a great disservice to tarnish Bob Kane's legacy. As principal artist, he had the final say on the characters' look and designs; and no matter how many suggestions others in the company gave, it was Bob Kane's final say on how the characters looked and acted. Sure, Bill Finger was a major influence on Kane to certain regards, however, he was not a co-creator by any means. Does this excuse Bob Kane's actions - not necessarily. But it shouldn't allow comic " " "fans" " " to de-credit Kane either. Having read the accounts and looked into the situation as much as I have, I have to disagree that Finger deserves co-credit on the Batman character. Some of the villains and stories - oh most definitely. However, Finger had as little to do with the Batman we know today as he did with Hal Jordan Green Lantern. (zip!) The Bat-Man character of 1939 was a true pulp/western detective - much different from how he has been interpreted largely since the creation of Robin a few years later. Originally, those comic books were a lot darker (not aimed directly at a youth audience) and thusly were changed to reflect the changing reader base as the character and medium's popularity grew. If you actually read the stories Finger was credited with - that's not the modern Batman at all. And, for as many aspects as he apparently suggested (longer cowl ears, color scheme, utility belt, etc) there were just as many that never took off. And, there's no denying that with no Bob Kane there would have been no Batman. But, IMHO, without Bill Finger, there still would have been a batman. Jerry Robinson, Gardner Fox, and others contributed just as much as Finger - and they don't share in the credit... I, myself, am fine with Bob Kane taking sole credit for the Batman character. I honestly believe, looking over all that I have, that he is the only one who deserves credit for that character. The other villains though? - that's another story. But DC will be damned if they ever care to credit any of the other writers over the years. And, to be fair, no one wants film credits to be 10+ minutes long and comic acknowledgments to be 64 pages themselves! Unfair, perhaps. But, IMO Bill Finger has been given WAY more recognition for the Batman character than is rightfully deserved. No one cares to give Mr. Finger more credit with his other comic characters... Why? Because Batman is the most popular. And fanboys only care about crediting him there and not for the hundreds of other characters he helped shape and mold in those early days.

Many of the videos were are showing here on Television Vanguard are not actually 50th anniversary shows - we are simply putting together various show clips, interviews and so forth of various series that were broadcast during the 1966-67 season to give our viewers a taste of the series being shown and produced back then. @The SNES Man I really don't understand why Bob Kane gets SUCH a bad rap as he does nowadays. I mean, could he have been nicer to a few people and perhaps a bit more humble, sure. But, he created Batman for Pete's sake! I'm surprised Bill Finger gets the co-credit for Batman but not for the other characters he helped create and mold. I mean, he worked in the industry for decades!!! But no, only Batman because he's the popular one. Besides, his contributions to that original gun-toting short purple glove wearing vigilante pulp detective have been practically absent from the character for the better half of his existence! Why not give out credit where credit is due? Give Bill Finger credit for his contributions to Detective Comics as a whole and superheroes outside of only Superman's longevity. It's sad to see so many think of Bob Kane as nothing more than a hack nowadays. I'm sure neither Bob nor Bill would have wanted that.
