This was the first symphony I ever listened to. My parents pushed me to join a youth orchestra (I play French horn), and though I was initially against it, this piece convinced me otherwise. Will always have amazing memories associated with hearing and playing Franck, and am eternally grateful for it (and my parents) bringing me into the world of classical music.

Rare indeed to hear this conductor in this repertoire which makes this recording even more special.

Amazing rich sound. This is from 1952 and mono recording. But it's amazing sound. Big WOW. Sound terrific in my monitor speakers. Very warm pleasant sound. And the rendition is so beautiful.

The opening bars of this symphony are so beautiful it gives me chills. Thank you for this!

This was the 2nd time that Furtwangler conducted this Franck symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic. The first occurred on the last day of January in 1945 just weeks before the City fell to Soviet troops. The Gestapo was looking for Furtwangler and he quietly found asylum in Switzerland. Both versions are on You Tube.

Thanks for posting this beautiful performance brilliantly remastered. I wax hot and cold about Furtwaengler's art, never quite sure if the 'spontaneity' was a lack of rhythmic control coupled with a strange - many would say - flawed technique.

What a strong powerful recording. I think that only the CSO in Chicago is louder. But both are very professional and reveal an idealism of the wanning 20th century music criticism.

Eminent Furtwangler in the best interpretation of Cesar Franck Symphony.I got it about 1962.Sainte - Clothilde waa chez-lui.Furtwanger wa a great wagnerian and he wagnerized an slowered Beethoven.It sound grandiose indeed.In the same way,Toscanini italianized Wagner,independently of italian characteristic in Wagner (Die Walkure).Furtwangler and Toscanini were the first that taught me Beethoven,Brahms and Wagner .I stll love their great interpretations. 2nd is close to Brahms.

This symphony is my biggest musical discovery of 2021. Franck's symphony is a timeless masterpiece, the subjects in all the movements are very satisfying, the work is dynamic and dramatic, it tells a story to the listener.

Very strange: this is the only Bruckner symphony in three movements I happen to know

I must say I rather like this performance. Inner voices clearer. Monteux, Parray , Bernstein , Munch are best though.

It's a so called "Muss es sein" motif, first used by Beethoven in his late quartets, then by many other composers.

After hearing the same with Celibidache, Furtwängler seems unsufficient to me.

It all depends on the period, the year of the recording. Celibidache is one of the conductors who has evolved the most in his direction. He can have strokes of genius, but we reproach him especially in his old age for stretching the sections to such an extent that it becomes difficult to follow the musical discourse and the guideline of the work. Furtangler's art does not lie in a meticulous reproduction of the score. The work is treated as a whole as a living organic material, the interpretation is a re-creation which aims with a lot of intuitions to lead us crescendo to the paroxysm of the work, to its denouement, its resolution. Furtwangler can be listened to from beginning to end without interruption, otherwise it is impossible to really understand it. In the case of Furtwangler conducting Franck's symphony: one must follow with great attention the unerring rise from doubt to triumph.

@@classicalmusicreference Well said. I think it's fair to observe that Furtwängler is not for everyone. Also fair to mention that Celibidache considered Furtwängler to be among the greatest of conductors. There's room in music for many interpretive styles.

Yes on so many occasions with St Wilhelm (who seems to be worshipped by so many) you get the impression he can't remember from one bar to the next, let alone paragraph, what tempo he was in and here all momemtum is lost in the second part of the opening theme and never regained. In essence self-indulgence masquerading as spirituality. As you say Paray is far superior, as are Boult and many others.

Furtwangler was usually recorded at live performances with poor recording equipment. I haven't heard the original of this performance but other performances of his are so badly recorded they're hard to listen to. My guess is that this new mastering made the sound more natural than it was in the original.
