It isn't that radical, but American politicians tend to radically lie who pays for it. European social democracy isn't paid by the rich but by taxing both the middle class and the rich pretty heavily. In Germany, for all income above 59k, the tax percentage is 42%, for income above 278k it is 45%, and there is no extra millonaire tax brackets above that. THen the value-added-tax/sales tax is 19% in Germany on top of that.

I could just see Ana almost bursting in her attempts to restrain herself on the issues of health care cost and civility.

she restrain herself because she knows who is her interlocutor. She knows that Fukuyama can make her to go around in a cart-dog, if she attempt to claim its ideal justice.

Thank you for the interview, and thank you Mr Fukuyama: your work was very influental during my studies and it still serves as a contradictional point in my thinking, but all with honest respect. Today's Liberalism itself turned into ideology with its own set of populistic tactics. Today we should focus on change, common goods, networks and positive interactions. All approaches that aim for conserving a certain state of mind will end up in populistic speeches and some sort of repression - including the classic Liberal talks. (Using "Liberal" in the European way - US Progressives, feel the Bern!) ❤

Bernie’s ideas may seem unrealistic to some but once they’re explained they resonate well with regular people. He will bring about the positive changes we need even if every single policy doesn’t get passed. Great interview Ana! 💙

Honestly Ana Kasparian this is probably your best interview work, and right on the money in terms of the conversations needed to be had today.

This is the second one of these interviews I've seen, the first with Stiglitz yesterday. Looking forward to many more of these and going to look back to watch more. Great job Ana!

I will never be impressed by anyone expressing concerns about the cost for medicare for all that does not speak to the very real costs of not having it. Sick and dying people are not cheap.The truer narrative is that a lot of "for profit health care" businesses will suffer. But the population and most employers will benefit. And the real cost to GDP will likely be in favor of Medicare for all. And even if it is not, what is the point of having a nation, and paying taxes to a nation, that does not put a higher value on well being of its citizens?

I was on that Grand ship last week as the president told the world he did not want it to land coz it would make the numbers bigger. As an Aussie I watched the horror on the faces of Americans who at that hour, realised their president hold them in contempt. So sad. Other countries have problems too but not lack of basic human kindness and mercy.

I know this was an interview and not a debate, but did get irritated that ana couldn't challenge on some of these stances of fukuyama, it comes off as agreeing with it, though i know she doesn't from the get go by saying she was biased. I don't like filtered Ana :(

Nice, but what is "democracy"? Fukuyama said that after the fall of the Soviet Union the history was over; well, so the "West Liberal Democracy" after the WWII until the 90' was a populist lie.

I agree, in minute 2 you can follow him switching from capitalism over to "liberal democracy" just to save his position. More accurate would be that countries with some sort of history are not the product of one ideology - they are the result of the efforts and consents of various different interest groups. Also interesting is how he later changes to the "power of the states" when it is about tax loop-holes and social inequality - funny to hear from a liberal. It seems he is no longer taking a political position, he is promoting a certain status quo. Worse thing that could happen according to him - people being out there in the streets :)

Interesting to hear the critique of the decline of the social-democracy from the man who wrote the book stating that history ended with the fall of the Berlin-wall... I am glad he changed his mind: social unequality does not just end because of historical events. In contrast: that discourse has been globalized, and all the talks about "Western values" and similar concepts are only defined to push us back behind new walls. Values are global, same with the actual thread of a tyranny.

Keywords for your search would be "Jürgen Habermas", "communitarism" and "Zizek" - all providing different perspectives. We are one family, have the same problems and we are able to develop a global set of codes and standards. Cheers

Fukuyama is wise. Although I wish when he talks about climate change he would differentiate between that which is just a cycle of climate over hundreds of thousands of years and that which is induced by man’s activities. This distinction is hugely important as the countermeasures that would be effective in each case are very different. I worry that we are focussed on CO2 when we should be focussed on adaptation, a CO2 focus will do nothing to help us adapt to the inevitable ocean rises.

He was right about it. There are no longer any desire for change of the economic structure. Our rapid development of technology and a lose capitalism has put the world into a state of endless consumerism. Ofcourse there will still be wars, conflicts, identity crises but these conflicts won't change the world/state in any ideological sense. The ideology is dead, and history was runned by conflicts of ideology, therefore, history is dead. Its all about conflict of intrests right now.

I swear America is the only country that talks and debates these topics so much about socialism in free markets and globalization when other countries have already figured it out and I've been doing it for decades even centuries. There's a reason we're not the top developed Nation no matter how much makeup we try to put on

Everything Fukuyama theorised has been wrong (even according to his own admissions). Remember his triumphalism when he declared the "End of History" after the collapse of the Soviet Union?! He declared the victory of western values, then oops, ten years later and you have 9/11, then seven years later and you have the Great Recession when capitalism was on the verge of deterioration.

Francis, don't you understand that policies become popular and seen as possible after their proponents push to adopt them loudly before even the question of 'feasibility' is answered. There will always be arguments about how health care change is impossible or will backfire. The Republicans said the same thing about Obama care, say the same things about expanding social programs all the time (never about military of course). The Reaganite theory of balanced budgets and running government like a business is wrong compared to Modern Monetary Theory and the gross weakening of tax laws as well as the vast shift in wealth to the ultra rich. So yes it can be done. Perhaps the political will is not quite there right now, but it will reach critical mass eventually.

This guy seems to be wrong about alot of stuff.
