Hell pretty much all of his films from the 70s are best film of all time worthy...the conversation, gf1, gf2, and apocalypse now. The man is probably the most important director of the past 50 years.

He was the godfather to the entire new breed of directors - the brat pack - Lucas, Scorsese, DePalma, Milius, Speilberg, Kaufmann, Ballard - they all redefined Hollywood.

One of the best runs by a director ever, if not the best. 2 movies that could easily be argued as the best movies ever (Godfather Part 1 and 2), another movie that’s among the best, and probably the best in it’s genre (Apocalypse Now), and also another fantastic movie (The Conversation), all within the space of 7 years.

Part II is possibly - POSSIBLY - the best film ever made. But what a year!

I am completely in agreement, the flashback of Don Vito's youth is wonderful (even on the book), among other things interpreted by some of the best Italian actors (Leopoldo Trieste: Mr. Roberto, Gastone Moschin: Don Fanucci).

Godfather part 2 was a gigantic film. locations around the world and the cast, flashbacks with the old scenery and a great movie. Very complex. Directing that masterpiece was amazing. An easy directing Oscar imo.

Polanski, Truffaut, Fosse, Cassavetes and Coppola in the same category. 74 was one of the best years in movie history.

Even Spielberg made his feature film debut in 74 with The Sugarland Express. Not many people don’t know sadly about it.

It was the 70's, you know. Best decade for movies ever. Look at the 50 films nominated for Best Picture & almost every one is now considered a classic.

Francis Ford Coppola, you are a directive masterpiece when it comes to Mafia!

Well deserved. Should have won for The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

Godfather Part II vs Chinatown is probably the greatest showdown of all time although no one talks about it

What a moment in movie history! Feel giddy at the thought of all the talent in that room! American cinema has never been this golden again. Just a perfect blend of commercial success and great artistry with substance.

It was the decade of risk-taking - not in budget but in writing and technique. The 60's was unique, but in a quirky, silly way.

Chinatown was brilliant, and probably could have won had it been released in another year, but Godfather 2 is streaks ahead of it

He was amazing, as was Gena Rowlands, his wife and the film dazzles. Actually, that's an impressive group of directors there. I've seen all of those films, and they're timeless gems! I pick Coppola, as well, but man, the others are awesome, too. I think Francis should've won for Apocalypse, Now, too.

The Godfather Part II has great directing.

Prime Coppola is the greatest filmmaker to ever live. Nobody can deny that.

Good call. I would've liked him to thank Mario Puzo and Al Pacino, De Niro. Oh well, he seemed pretty keyed up. Glad he won!

I was just thinking the same thing! Competition was tough back then. Chinatown, The Godfather Part 2, A Woman Under The Influence, Day For Night and Lenny, wow.

Coppola... Amazing director, with an amazingly under productive career!

Here's a bit of trivia, when Paramount proposed "Godfather 2" Coppola said he would produce it but not direct it, he suggested Martin Scorsese should direct it. Imagine how different that film would've been! And he forgot to thank the other big shot at Paramount back then, Robert Evans who green lit the Godfather films ever being made

I don't agree. It wasn't as amazing and great as the first two, but I enjoyed it. It had it's moments. Francis set his own bar, too high, but the third one didn't 'blow' it. Pacino was still awesome. Andy Garcia was impressive. Etc...

It was interesting, but too derivative of the first 2 - too much nostalgia which seemed like an easy way to elicit emotion without having to write something new and imaginative.

I know this is a Coppola thread. And I'm a huge fan. But just to think that, in this year of all years, with so many heavyweight films and directors battling for the top spot, John Cassavettes and "A Woman Under the Influence" was in the mix. Wow.

Finally for the first time i sawed the man who made the greatest trilogy of all time

It was epic when we saw the prologue before the announcement was read by Jhonny Fontane.

Wow, Goldie Hawn look so much like Heather Graham in this one.

Coppola owned American cinema in the 1970s Every film a masterpiece and although it’s not about the awards I am glad they always noticed he deserved them.

Part II Is the greatest film ever made.

Just realized the line-up. Impressive contemporaries -Traffaut, Polanski, Fosse, Cassavete & Coppola. I've done some film analysis with some these directors during my film school days.

Goldie Hawn was soooo cutie-pie back then in the 70's. Here, she reminds me a little of Cybill Shepherd in Taxi Driver. Just the way she smirks or says her lines, I dunno....her eyes I guess :P

Godfather I and II, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now. In just ten years, FFC shot four flawless, legendary masterpieces. I wonder if there's another director who has accomplished such a thing and at that level.

This time he beat out Fosse (who definitely deserved it the first time around for Cabaret - as did Joel Grey, beating out a "mafia" of Godfather actors)...can you imagine if Fosse had won again against Coppola? And by the way, Chinatown is a superbly directed film - second only to The Godfather Part II in that year's category.

Polanski, Truffaut, Coppola, Fosse, and Cassavetes. What a lineup.

Better than the first though it is hard to top Brando!!!!

I really liked "a woman under the influence" it was really something different and such a liberating film for women.

First time I've seen this. Godfather part 2 was fantastic but I've got to say without any doubt that the star of that clip had to be Goldie Hawn. I forgot what a stunning beauty she was way back then. Breathtaking to say the very least.

The Godfather is a masterpiece! But, Bob Fosse absolutely deserved his Oscar for best directing in Cabaret, as Joel Grey for supporting actor, too! It was a good decision! There's no doubt!

This may be the best set of nominees for an directing oscar.

And thanks for giving my dad an oscar ❤

Frank Sinatra was a guest host in 1975 along with Bob Hope which was the host of the oscars. I looked in imdb so I know it's true that he was the guest host. But I watched another oscar clip from 1975 when Bob hope started off the oscar with his monologue and they didn't say anything about Sinatra being the guest host. So I don't know they didn't mention that fact.

There were rotating hosts during most of the 70's. In 75 the hosts were Bob Hope Shirley Maclaine Sammy Davis & Sinatra!

Plus, Frank didn't like Puzo and his masterpiece because of Johnny Fountaine. So, maybe with Coppola was not different.

back then even Francis Ford Coppola didn't get a standing O. These days they'd stand up for just anyone, making the moment less special imo.

I think The Conversation's been his best film. For me best director here was Cassavetes, hands down!
