Two things: Italy won the WC without giving up a goal in open play (own goal) and France has been playing this way for decades. Half the teams play tournament style football. Defense wins championships. Going to miss Pepe and Ronaldo.

This game was as expected. After the Spain Germany we knew this was gonna be some haram but thankfully it at least came alive in the second half. Congratulations France, commiserations Portugal. As ugly as this Deschamps team plays they know how to grind wins and for tournament football this can get you through. Coz at the end of the day the winner is whoever wins not who plays the "best/prettiest" football. About to tuck into some Canada v Venezuela as i finished this video so hopefully my dark horse lives on there. Canada have been better than expected this tournament but Venezuela have the tools to get it done

what you mean Deschamps know how to grind wins...the destiny of the game was decided in penalties. What would you say if they lost in them? it was pure luck

@@migueldebarroscanadinhas8871 My guy I'm obviously talking about in a general sense. Not this specific result. France don't concede many goals and that's why they have been able to "grind" many games in various tournaments be it 2018 world cup winning it, 2020 Euros their defence was leaky and they got punished, 2022 world cup they were solid and made the final, now 2024 Euros they are through to a semi without scoring an open play goal because they build on that defensive rigidity which then gives room to grind results. So of course going through on penalties is luck "on the day" but that doesn't take away the context of how Deschamps has built his side coz he has a plethora of attacking talent but he's a naturally defensive manager who is only going to lean into an open game if the opponent forces him into it otherwise he'll happily play for 1-0's.

@@TheOnlyTapsI mean, i get it, France is probably one of the first big teams of this era to try to implement the park the bus mentality with effectiveness in international tournaments. In spite of that I think that that their rate of success will start to diminish because everyone is copying this style, even small teams are starting to realize that open play is a liability, specially in knock out tournaments like this and its getting very 50/50. Its easier for managers to prepare good defenses for a WC/Euro with the short time they get with the players than it is to experiment with attacking plays and complex triangulations that take a lot of time and chemistry. Ultimately I think that in the near future managers will have to find new ways for attacking maneuvers because for now, I think that the defensive "chess" is killing good attacking football. We are in boring adaptation era, the attacking aspect of the game needs to keep up with the defensive one.

That's why again I was just pointing out how they are so I dunno why you got mad at the statement about them "grinding wins" 😂 Coz yeah even for Deschamps he's not at the end of his cycle with them. They are in that phase that Germany was in with Löw when he started running out of ideas so the margins are getting smaller and smaller with each tournament for them. Although I don't think attacking play will ever be a liability necessarily coz good attacking teams are able to break down these defences but yeah it's just that tournament football will always favour many contrasting matchups coz like you mentioned at international level you don't get the time necessary to implement very complex plans the way people can at club level so at international level it's usually about finding what best works for the group you have and going with it. But yeah for me that's actually the beauty of international football coz I think the club game is actually where we find more boring stalemates with everyone trying to play like each other at certain levels so often the maverick teams end up sticking out coz they dare to be different. But yeah in any case will be interesting to see how France evolve once the Deschamps era comes to an end coz Zizou has been waiting in the wings for years now but Deschamps keeps chugging along.
