France deploys army at New Caledonia ports, airport; state of emergency imposed after riots

The entire world is a "colony" Japan has indigenous people (The Ainu) so do Thailand (they have indigenous related to Papuans and Andaman tribes), North Africa (the Berbers) Sweden (the Sami) England (the Celts from Cornwall) etc etc When people are born somewhere and have been living on a land for centuries, you can't undo history, and ask entire ethnic groups to leave.. The history of humanity is a history of constant migrations. Everywhere. The solution is to find an equal future for all. We can not erase history. New Yorkers will not leave and give Manhattan back to the Lenape tribe that owned it 300 years ago.

The strategic importance of New Caledonia is a moot point, as France would actually have to be willing and able to field comparable forces to take on China, unless the importance is for the US/NATO, but given the French psychology vis-a-vis Indochina & Algeria (the bitterness and anguish of letting an empire go), the French might indeed validate such an importance. But, in practice, the importance is almost certainly more pragmatic, namely that it is an offshore tax heaven.

Similar to New Caledonia, Vanuatu was also a French Colony In the 1880s, France and the United Kingdom claimed parts of the archipelago, and in 1906, they agreed on a framework for jointly managing the archipelago as the New Hebrides through an Anglo-French condominium. An independence movement arose in the 1970s, and the Republic of Vanuatu was founded in 1980. Since independence, the country has become a member of the United Nations
