Framing VAN with 80/20 ALUMINUM | Promaster Van Build

In this video I go over how went went about framing our van. We decided to go a different route then most who use wood to frame everything. Using the 80/20 aluminum made framing things alot faster and easier than if we had done this with wood. Not only that but you won't ever have any rust/mold issues while using aluminum. This stuff is normally used in large Plants and companies and has proven its durability so I felt that if an accident was to occur this is the strongest ground work I can mount down to everything to keep things from breaking loose and being thrown at high speeds.

    I've watched hundreds of rebuild videos and always thought, "all that wood has to be very heavy" I always thought using aluminum beams would work better as well as already having holes in them for wiring. You are the first one who actually did it! Congrats!

    I learnt one incredible idea from your video, it was the extra space you created on the bed for storage, most beds in this system are fully opened right across the entire space, with your system the mattress is smaller yet big enough or say one adult and two dogs hahahahahahah Thanks This is how i am going to make my bed now , very excited to have found this

    Fantastic job and an unusual design! Its not easy figuring this stuff out. I"m just applying myself to the 80/20 bed problem - I want to modify Seven oh Seven's sliding bed frame to use less 80/20 - mainly use it for the actual slide mechanism. His project materials were $750 - which I think I can improve on - but hope not to the detriment of the project. I did get the rivnut tool which I hope will help. Great to see your video and wish you lots of luck with your build and travels. Yours Jennie

    Be sure to price the 80/20 in bulk, and cut it yourself. You can also use internal connectors that are as strong as those very expensive external connectors. You need to have a drill press, but most home shops should have one. Do some research on aluminum extrusions. There are many different sizes and uses. Very versatile stuff!

    keep in mind the overdesign is for events like accidents where the components inside your van will see high g forces not so much whether a dresser can stay upright. so i would make sure the structures can adequately support high g loads in case of accidents so you dont have potentially dangerous projectiles coming loose. just my 2 cents of course.

    It’s a great design and I’m a total advocate for using lighter, stronger materials. After doing several vans myself, my concern is not in your structure, it’s your insulation. You didn’t break from the metal of your van into your aluminum structure, so any heat or cold from outside is going to conduct through your interior. Having wood braces adhered to the metal of your van, then fastening the aluminum to the wood eliminates the thermal bridge, therefore preserving the r-value of the rest of your build. You’re only as strong as your weakest point. It doesn’t look like you’re able to easily disassemble and make these changes to your design, so I wish you the best, but if you’re having trouble keeping the van hot or cold, this is the reason. Best of luck.

  • @imagomichelle

    @imagomichelle

    How would you create that thermal break otherwise?

  • @Battlebuddie

    @Battlebuddie

    3 жыл бұрын

    Michelle Bohls you would fasten wooden 1x3 straps to the metal first with self tapping screws. Then when you fix something to the structure, your screws are going into the wood and not metal so no heat will conduct down through any of the tubing or screw heads.

    Hey, nice work. How do you deal with the conduction of heat/cold from the van walls to the 80/20? Did you add any kind of thermal break? I want to use 80/20 but I'm concerned about this.

  • @Wookey.

    @Wookey.

    3 жыл бұрын

    That does seem to be the main disavantage of ali framing. Fibreglass makes a good strong thermal break material, or compacfoam for more insulation/less strength. You could just use pultruded fibreglass for the framing, but it's quite bendy so would need bigger sections or more supports. I've not seen anyone try that in a van build so maybe it's a dumb idea :-) I hardly see anyone cover the ribbing with even the slightest thermal break, which must compromise the insulation significantly, although I've not done the actual modelling to check.

    In my design, which is different but I am using aluminum profile throughout - I am going to cut fibre glass or nylon blank plates between the vehicle and aluminum frame plus nylon washers to deal with heat transfer. For the floor struts I plan to use fibreglass floor box section for same reason. I like the rigidity of using 80/20 because it adds torsional strength to the van body - some of which is lost when, and if, you remove the steel bulkhead. I also like it because it reduces any potential 'squeaking' that might come from wood framing.
