Dane missed his shot. Summary: Shots 1-5: Clearly missed. Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control). Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses. Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because Dane was already dead.

The "meet me at lan" moment

When you get here so early you can still see the thief running away

This is client-side prediction in action -- when you clicked, the game simulated the action of firing the gun immediately on your end, while it sends the shot input to the server and awaits a response. But by the time the server processed your clicking, the other Engie already killed you. But on your end, it looks like you shot first, then inexplicably died anyways.

You weren’t robbed of a kill, the enemy engineer just outsmarted boolet.

I’ve found that in TF2 and other games from Valve, when you fire a gun, everything happens on the client *before* it happens on the server, with a delay depending on ping and lag. So, as you see in this frame-by-frame, your client is playing out the events of you firing the gun and the bullets leaving it and entering him. But server side none of that has happened yet because the signal from you firing the gun hasn’t reached the server yet.

Ah yes, this is only because of the latency. Your enemy had more lag, so the server had to compensate for it. When the server travels back in time to do the bullet hit detection, since they had more latency, the server assumed the shot of the enemy occurred first, giving him the advantage.

I have a theory, a while ago I watched a video where this dude tests why when two scouts shoot at each other at the exact same time, one dies but the other doesn’t, he goes on explaining why, some part has to do with one joining first and overall performing better(at least I think so.) and proves it in other different tests, I can’t remember the video name or who did it. I’m sure one of you at least know what I’m talking about. So I’m thinking what he tested happened here, you Dane where most likely not doing much to impact the game while I’m sure the other was doing the opposite, doing his best to help his team push the cart while doing some of the most impact in the game. Maybe. I might be wrong you guys are free to tear into me for sounding like a jackass if I’m wrong.

This happened to me a few times, from what I can tell it’s when someone’s internet takes a quick dive down without warning, I am unsure if it has to be someone involved or not, it may have also been coincidence when it happened

It happens purely due to latency, and the way that multiplayer games try to combat it. A trick called Client-Side Prediction is used to reduce the feeling of latency in the server connection. Instead of waiting for the server to respond and acknowledge that you did a thing(I.E, fire a shot), instead it simulates the action on your screen before the server even responds. But if on the server-side, the player has already died, then the result is those irritating moments where you appear to fire your weapon, but end up dying and not doing any damage to the enemy. TL;DR: This happens due to a side effect of Client-Side Prediction.

Definitely a lag thing. I have fairly often tried to reflect rockets so late that I get gibbed and hear the airblast sound after I've died. Usually happens with higher ping.
