Fractal FM9 How to Use and Set Up Layouts for Live Use
This video was meant to show how I am using the Layouts and how you can customize the factory (or make one from scratch). This is a super easy and essential part of gigging with the FM9 so I hope it helps!

It’s nice to see your journey as a new user explaining what you need the unit to do and how you got it to work for you. Don’t be afraid to sound like a noob as you figure things out and learn as you go, that’s very helpful and educational to new users as we can relate to what you are going thru and we want to learn the same things you are learning! Keep posting your progress as you create your new sounds and layouts. We already know you are a great player 👍🏻 we also know you are a cool and humble guy for not trying to sound smarter than everyone else but showing us how you are figuring things out. It’s a great incentive to everyone else new to the fractal ecosystem! Keep those vids coming brother!

@@SteveSterlacci you are a solid dude! I’m still using my fm3 as I wait for the invite email for my FM9. I used to play modern county too, but at the moment Im only playing P&W music at church and don’t need many different hi gain amp sounds, but we use lots of delays and reverbs, swells, etc. I saw that the FM9 has some improvements in that area over the fm3, can’t wait to check the new features!

Very sensible updates to the factory layouts - I've copied this to my FM9. Thanks for doing the hard work, Steve! Edit - I just updated it so that on the switch that you have going back and forth between scenes and effects, I've added a hold function that takes me back to the presets. Best of all worlds!

Great video and excellent explanation. The more I watch your videos about the FM9, the more it seems like the unit is not that difficult to operate. This unit and the Helix are on top of my list. After watching the videos about both, I may choose the FM9. More and more people claim that the amps, fx, etc of the FM9 sound better. And with these kind of instructions, operating the unit will be easy. I hope to receive a mail from Fractal soon, I am still on the waiting list.

At this point, its hard to argue against an fm9. Helix is getting older and could be replaced within 2 years. But also, i could use my helix as is until the day i die and be perfectly happy never upgrading.

I took a tip from G66 there are two videos that tells you what you want to do for a live situation. The layout I like is layout 2 where you can tap presets, effects, and scenes, top row. 4 scenes, a more button, and still have the tap tempo on the bottom row. Since I got this unit 2 weeks ago and I opened it Christmas Day I've been so fascinated but what you can do with it. Another thing is you have global layouts, but you can also on let's say a few presets you can override a button for a particular function. The flexibility of having global and able to override a button in a few presets really takes it to the next level.

@@SteveSterlacci When you're editing a switch in FM9-Edit, there's a Edit Links button on the right. So for every Switch in the Preset layout, you can set a Layout Link to the Scenes layout. You can set it to change layouts in the FM9 or FC6/FC12 when you have one connected.

Hi Steve I have had my FM9 for 3 months now. Still using my Helix live. I find the tap dancing between banks and scenes too lengthy. I would love to setup the FM9 foot switches similar to the Helix e.g. Two right buttons preset up down. Bottom row left to right 4 buttons for scenes (1 to 4) next tuner (5). Bank down (6). Top row right Bank Up (7). The other two (8 and 9) to assign things like boost. Have you seen anyone do this. Learning the FM9 after the Helix has been quite challenging, the basic setout grid is fine. Just can’t get this button stuff to work. I use a preset per song. Thanks for your videos. They always help, I am 71 so not as savvy as I used to be. Mike 😅

Apologies if I've missed you weighing in on this somewhere else, but wondering what your opinion is on the sounds you can get with the FM9 vs what you can get with the helix, irrespective of other considerations - UI, ease of use, etc. Straight up, head to head, does one have an advantage in tone/touch/realism etc? I've been using a helix for a couple of years, and will probably be happy with it if it's the last thing I ever buy, but I am on the FM9 waiting list, and am curious about the fractal stuff. I'm really only interested in modelers, as I don't have a roomful of amps, so no real reason to look at the Quad Cortex or Kemper. So for me it's just the Helix and Fractal, and I have more faith in your ability to be completely unbiased and honest than any other youtuber, because of previous videos, and our interactions in the Helix Facebook user group (you've helped me a few times!), so looking forward to hearing what your thoughts are, assuming you are at a point where you're ready to make a call like that.

Hey Roger! Thanks for the kind words and support. So, at the moment, Helix is still the best overall gigging option. Fractal has better sounds out of the box, the cabinet section in particular is where it shines IMO. BUT, listen back to clips of yourself playing both, and you wont think one is better than the other lol. I have gone back to helix expecting it to sound like total poo, then after I plug in, I actually love the sound. Its like anything. One day your ears want this, another day they want that...

Great vid Steve. I will def try this on mine. This thing is def not as easy as Helix however the quality and sounds out of the box are much nicer. Quick question, on the Helix u can store your own presets on a separate bank or area from the factory, is that possible on this? Otherwise I have to go to preset 383 before i reach empty slots?
