FPV Flightline F4U Corsair | Battery Ejects Mid-Flight

Ойын-сауық

During one of our practice session for an upcoming event we had something amazing happen.
The main FPV and flight battery ejected from our F4U during an inverted pass over the Runway. Pilot (Tom) had no control of the plane, but the onboard video transmitter had enough power to record a few more seconds. The video cuts out as the plane is level at about 40ft. To everyone's surprise the plane landed itself safely in the field with NO DAMAGE.

About 15 years ago I was working in Australia on a UAV project and we had one of our UAV's that we sent on an out and back mission and on it's way back the engine quit, we had telemeter data to tell us where it was and we drove to it to recover the pieces and when we go to it there it was sitting on it's land gear ready to fly again. And this was long before there was auto-land for UAV's.

Good question. All we know is when the battery departed the plane the video and controls worked for like a second or so. It was enough to flip the plane over and catch a little FPV video. Amazing how this Corsair flew so stable without the weight of the battery. It did a gentle circle around the field until gently landing in the grass. So lucky!! 😅

That's why I put velcro strip on all my batterys with straps aswell it's fixed in there well.

Good point! We usually don't do much negative maneuvers. This was us goofing off a bit and having fun between formation practice. Anyway, lesson learned. 😅

Maybe just enough in a capacitor to move the servos...

exactly this ^^ - caps are normally used to level out the power levels coming into the circuits, but also act as a few seconds of "oh shit" power if you lose the battery

It was bad enough for Human Pilots to land these planes....as Great as they were/are......... BUT as far as an R/C plane landing w/o its battery pack............VERY Lucky!!! Nice flying skills, before "loss".

Thank you for the kind words. You're right, we got very lucky to not lose this bird completely. Gotta hand it to FlightLine though. We totally love this Corsair. Gentle but fun with zero tip stall characteristics usually associated with the Corsair. Thanks again for your observations! 😊

Were you under goggle? Separate flight battery? Separate FPVTX power?

I was under DJI V2 goggle. There was no other batteries on the plane. Just the 6S 6000 mAh flight pack battery. We're not sure why, but the video and controls worked for like a second or so. Interesting question we'd like an answer to also! 😅

@@thomaswilliams4944 I believe that there would be some large reservoir Capacitors for the engine, that may have held a charge for enough time to make the flight control inputs. Depends on if there were Engine Caps installed tho. Awesome video!

there's a little bit of power on the capacitors on the circuit boards - those provided the power once the battery came off.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES re-use or attempt to charge that battery. It is destroyed, especially with the road rash visible in the video.

The battery was damaged for sure and will be discarded appropriately for abundance of caution. It wasn't destroyed since it has the same internal resistance and C rating it had before the incident. Very resilient battery! 🙂 🙏
