Four-Year Review of BMW G310GS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Trying to decide if I should keep the G310GS or if it's time to trade it in. I explain very basically what I have liked about it, and what I haven't loved about it, while riding through my local canyon.

I bought a 2022 310 GS yesterday, and the more I ride it the more fun it is. I'm returning to riding at 67 years of age after a 30 year absence and after taking the BMW road course on a 1250 GS and spending too much time on the ground under it I thought starting smaller was a good idea

Kevin, thanks for chiming in. Cool that you're back on bikes, at 67...that is awesome. I've never ridden a 1250 GS, but yeah, imagine it's quite a different experience. Be well man. Where are from?

I've had mine for 4 years too. Had to get the battery replaced under warranty but thats the only problem I've had with it so far. Stalling issue was fixed with an ECU update and a smaller front sprocket.

Thanks for the review! I got my g310gs just a couple of months ago and love it. Except highways it does everything really well.

It's true, on highways it's not so recommended, but if you don't mind running 75 mph without forcing the engine, I think you can enjoy it on highways!

Thanks for chiming in, Kalle. I definitely don't love it on freeways, too buzzy and too light, but pretty decent everywhere else. However, I don't enjoy riding any bike on freeways. I'll do it if I have to but find it pretty boring. Glad you're enjoying yours! You've great footage of it for sure.

@@THE_SNAPP thanks! 👍😀 I completely agree, highways are boring. But, besides that, with the g310gs they also become slightly painful…haha

Bought one brand new a few weeks ago and loving every minute of it. Don't let KZread reviews scare you. Much has been said about vibrations. I am coming from a big, heavy Honda cruiser and I had just as much vibration. It's a motorcycle, not a Lexus. You are sitting on top of the engine. What do you expect? In fact, the BMW smoothes out nicely at 70mph and cruises all day. I can pass anything on the road with power to spare. It's light, nimble and a delight in the twisties. Then there are stories of coolant and oil leaks. I have 500 miles on the clock in two weeks and I see none of that. The bike exudes quality and workmanship.

There are so many opinions out there about this bike and some even feel this bike is a failure because it doesn't do any one thing really well -- it's not a great off road, not great on highway, lacks a little power, etc etc. The reality is, all of these points are what make it a great all around machine. I feel like the versatility of a small and capable bike is often overshadowed by the need for bigger, more powerful bikes. For the price, there really isn't much competition out there when considering price, comfort, and all around capability. Now, they just need to bring us a 450cc twin, sub 400 pound version :)

Thanks for chiming in Brian. Where you from? I agree with all your thoughts. 450cc would be nice on this bike. It really does do many things well. Exceptionally well when you factor in price and engine size.

I’ve heard horror stories about the cost of servicing the 310gs. What are your thoughts on cost of upkeep?

Sorry, just saw this question. It hasn't been too bad really. I did just have the breaks done (minus the pads, they were still really good), and the break fluid and coolant flushed and replaced. They cleaned and tightened the chain as well. That all was around $600, but that's only the second time in six years I've taken it in...I've been doing the oil myself.

you do a lot of similar type rides as myself with the same off-road opinions, (but i also do plenty of 200 mile days in the summer as well) and i've also got back issues, so being comfortable is a big thing. it was great to hear your thought's, thanks

@@THE_SNAPP i live in yorkshire, england and spend most by biking days in the dales, north yorkshire, cumbria, scotland etc. atm i ride a cb125f although i have a full class A licence, and am going to upgrade to something that will get me up the hills a bit faster lol, although i'm no speedster. I enjoy the scenery and adventure, just like i did as a kid when i cycled most of the same routes i do now, and see no point in stressing myself going too fast down single track and b roads when you can't go that fast anyway & don't know what's or who's around the corner. I have two main contenders for a new bike, the 310 is one and the honda cb500f is another, so am just having a look before i test ride a few. GL

@@Bob-ts2tu that sounds like an incredible place to ride, you did an awesome job of describing it. I don't think you could go wrong with either bike. If I were presently choosing between those two same bikes, knowing everything I know now about the 310, I'd choose the Honda. I like the looks of the 310 better, and it's more comfortable, and more versatile. However, on the wide open roads all over in Utah where I live, the Honda with the extra power would be a bit more enjoyable. I love the motor in that 500cc series of bikes, and the gearbox is excellent. I really enjoy my little GS, though. The power has been adequate, and it's nice to keep going when the road ends. Good luck making your choice. Happy New Year!

@@THE_SNAPP thanks, yeah, im lucky to live in a part of the world with stunning scenery and great roads on my doorstep. I have been leaning towards the honda for some time, but seeing as a local dealer has a 2020 g310gs for sale, looking like new with only 544 miles on the clock & at a decent price, (and i may be able to chisel it down further seeing as its slow sale season), i'll probably at least take a look, if only to keep it for a year or so & not lose too much when i trade it in. Comfort is a real big priority atm, so it may be a good stop gap at least - decisions decisions lol. GL

I actually do still have it. Almost traded it in on a Triumph Trident, but they would only give me $2,500 trade in, so I changed my mind. Been test riding other bikes and am interested in an Iron 883 or a Triumph Street Twin (900). I'll keep the 310 though. And no, I've still not had any problems with it.
