The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I'm sorry this generation doesn't have this level of talent to listen to. I mean, that's not lip sync. There's layered harmony, the dance moves that don't look like they need mediation. Sorry. This is probably as good as music will ever be. Glad I lived in this time, even if I was just a tot..

Plenty of talented artists these days. What they don't have is the exposure you could get in 1965. There is no Ed Sullivan today exposing top talent to the masses.

  • @DonVideoGuy007

Ed Sullivan strictly forbade any song artist or the vocalists in a pop band/rock band, to "lip sync". The Ed Sullivan Show producers; and Ed Sullivan as executive producer, did allow for the artist to bring a studio recording of the music track; as demonstrated here by The Four Tops, if the "original hit song studio recording" had a large orchestra involved... but the vocalists had to sing on the stage live to the "instrumentation only" recording that they brought to the show.

This song; and the other The Four Tops hit songs as well as The Supremes and The Temptations hit singles, got this Brown Water Navy ordnanceman, and a million other sailors, Marines, Army soldiers, Air Force servicemembers, and Coastguardsmen, stationed in Vietnam's Mekong Delta through all of the ordeals and tribulations of the Vietnam War in that "far away land". Sad to hear of the passing of Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir - their all gone but their music still resonates in the younger generation - at least that recognize the brillance of the layered harmonies. Can we bring this clean and respectful music back? I read that record producers approached Levi Stubbs many times to go out on his own and record without the other 3 "Tops" and he always said no, they were a package deal. He could've made a lot more money but he stayed with the group. His integrity is admirable.

Don't know if you are aware or not -- he did sing, on film, a musical theater role, and did a terrific job. In the 1986 movie Little Shop of Horrors, Stubbs was the voice of Audrey II, the badass carnivorous alien plant, a major character. The musical Little Shop of Horrors originated on off-Broadway where it had a long run, but more than a decade after the film the show did make it to Broadway. Stubbs's/ Audrey II's songs are on KZread.
