I'm in NE Ohio and put about a dozen mums in the ground early last fall. They all flowered beautifully. Unfortunately, though I covered them with straw for the winter, only two of them made it (I'm told that's not all that unusual around these parts). I've diligently watered them as needed this spring/summer and over the past month have pinched off what look to me like little flower buds in the hope of encouraging more blooms in the fall. But I've only been pinching off what I think are the buds down to the first leaves. So I'm actually pinching very little at all (maybe a half-inch at most) as opposed to the two inches you recommend in the video. Another issue with one of the two plants I still have is that it's not at all round like the other plant is. As that one flowered last fall, it kind of broke up into a few clumps (it's kind of u-shaped now and rather uneven). It was still very pretty last year, but didn't remain in the traditional mum ball shape. I don't really mind that it's not a ball, but if I were to want to reshape it into more of a sphere, I'm not clear about how I would go about that at this point. I'm a little confused about the difference between pruning/shaping and pinching. They both seem like pretty much the same thing to me. Is the idea to first prune/shape it into the shape you want (e.g., spherical), then let it grow like that while continuing to keep it in the desired shape, then do the two-inch pinching you show us in the video at some point after that? When should I stop the pruning/shaping and begin to do just the pinching? If I want a plant full of blooms in the fall, at what point do I stop pinching off the buds? Thanks for doing what you do. I find your videos very informative.

It would be helpful to know what month/time of year to do the pruning and pinching, and whether to do this more than once in the season.

True, but summer lasts from June through September so is the pruning and pinching done once that whole time? And when is pruning usually done? July? August?

Glad to have found your video! Overwintered our mums & didn’t prune them much. This is our first time doing this in pots. Several pots are blooming already! I’ve been pinching spent & weak flowers off. What can I do to care for Mums to have blooms in fall?
