With all due respect Sardarji, it's not "pampering". Bravery, Patriotism, and saving of Hindus (who also actively aided Sikhs) are all TRUE. However, as the disclaimer with mutual funds disclosure says, "Past performance is NO guarantee of FUTURE" the same goes for the Sikh quam. The exemplarily disciplined Sikhs have become victims of their own success. Drugs, Missionaries, and migration are threatening the foundation of the Sikh faith. Khalistan is just a convenient excuse and escape from real problems.

When 1.2% of the population causes so much mayhem, its a fault of the larger population that allowed it to do so,. We have to go back into history as to why we give Punjab and Kashmir so much media coverage. Let the state do its job. These old dogs of media and state are racist. There are far bigger events happening in this country. During 1984, sIkhs were safe in Bengal and there are many who integrated with Hindus and intermarried. Many Sikhs even don't mind entering a temple. What is the fate of Khalistan ? Should we drive out all Sikhs? We all know what pains of partition is, worse Muslims who felt they cant live with kafirs and wanted their own land, bulk remained behind and doing far better.

Who said Sikhs are facing issues, Punjabi,Canadian, UK,Australian Sikhs are facing issues,Me and my family are well off.Punjabi Sikhs are facing issues because of bad governance and feudal capture. And some political parties tried to impose other cultures and language on Sikhs. They want to believe Sikhs that Sikhs are part Hindu and Sikhism is no unique and different religion. It is one of Sikhs main issue which makes us threaten that if we don’t speak out then one day our own will start believing that we are no different. And this is happening on state level. However Hindu and Sikhs are living peacefully together and have very strong relationship.

This is another way to divide Punjab and Sikhs.

Whatever the Sikhs are facing are also faced by Hindus also. But the funny thing is the same issues faced by Hindus will be completely ignored by everyone. And people even start making fun out of everything. If the same thing is faced by Sikhs, then here comes an episode of national interest dedicated to it. If it helps and provides some sense of justice, most of the militants were killed by either the security forces or in fighting... Unless, it was someone other than the militants who targeted hindus and moderate sikhs, I think some justice has been served.. Also, an entire generation of sikhs was wiped out, sons, husbands, wives, entire families with toddlers in under the suspicion of being anti national. Police was given a free hand and once they realised how lucrative it was, they went on targeting innocents for Monetary rewards and promotions. An entire generation kidnapped and disappeared, shot, cut & thrown into rivers. If u still desire more sikh blood, then perhaps the separatists are correct in pointing out that the majority of this country is genocidal and they wouldn't stop lusting after the blood of minorities.. There, however, has been no justice for those butchered in 1984. Another difference is that hindus were targeted by militants but sikhs were targeted by the government of their own country. Understand the difference? No tamilian was killed after Rajiv died. Ever heard of reminding them of anything like sikhs are constantly threatened with another 84?

Shekhar Gupta misses the most important point. It’s the economic one Punjab GDP per capita used to be highest one now it’s at just about average. All neighbors Haryana, Himachal, Uttarakhand have a higher GDP per capita. Punjab missed out in liberalization era while rest of the country prospered. The real problem with Punjab is the feudal nature of the society and lack of Industrialization. Unless land reforms are made Punjab will continue the backward March.

We still have much better financial situation in comparison to our neighbours. We don’t want industry in Punjab. We are very much against because of environment concerns. Such industries are polluting our rivers, Air and soil. I agree Punjab government have serious debt. The two main reasons are militancy period of 1980-1995 and immense corruption by politician.

What you said is true, especially punjab doesn’t deserve such high attention from national media. In terms of population it doesn’t come in top 10, in terms of gdp and gdp per capita it doesn’t come in top 10, also if anyone gives an excuse that punjab feeds the nation, no it doesn’t, In terms of wheat and sugarcane UP is top producer state of India, while west bengal produces most rice. Punjab has been treated as some special state, that has gone into the head of some punjabis.

As a Jat Sikh born and raised in Punjab, India in the 1970s. I have seen the old Khalistani movement and this one. The problem is corrupt leadership from fellow Sikhs like Shromani Akali Dal - Badal family etc. There is no atmosphere of education and entrepreneurship. Most of the Jat Sikh families have agricultural land and their children are targeted for drug addiction. I have known several families like these. My family luckily is educated but my relatives who are not educated have not been so lucky. Our family focused on education not power games which I feel much more prevalent in non educated Jat Sikh families. When it comes to religion - SGPC is considered to be a religious authority when that is a mistake. Many people learn false narratives from the Gurudwaras workers.

Name one community or linguistic group that doesn’t have grievances. The problem with Sikhs is their political leadership.

As a Sikh, I can say finally someone has hit the nail on the head. Most of the SIKHS DO NOT want Khalistan but they feel being second-class and are being treated badly. The drug problem, Deras support from the government, religious conversion, Sikhs in prison and the Water issue. Why can't and won't solve these issues, they haven't done this in the last 20-30 years.

You do realise your problem with conversions and deras are what you have in common with the Hindu RW? Now, I don't know the demography of the prisoners in Punjab jails, but it being a Sikh majority state, there's bound to be a larger Sikh population behind the prison than the minorities. And don't you think all the issues you've pointed out can be solved if you as a voter put the right people in power in the state govt?

AAP turned out to be garbage and Bhagwant mann and Kejriwal both betrayed Sikhs and Punjab. I can tell you they raised crores of funds on the back of NRIs and they turned around and stabbed people in the back. I used to be AAP supporter, but not anymore.

every issue except dera you described also exist in my state telangana. we also feel left out whenever union budget is announced, when we travel northern parts of india, water disputes etc. but, there is a civilized way of expressing our concerns. taking up the arms, rioting, destroying public properties, demanding a separate country is certainly not the way.

Thanks you SG for always keeping your eye on the ball and not getting distracted and thereby letting us get distracted from the real issues in the Republic. We need so many more editors like you.

Brother, i am curious to know the ground level reality of the demands... Whatever explained in the videos are obviously need to be addressed calmly by the center and state governments. But my question is on the separatist ideology.. Whether majority of Sikhs in Punjab are in support of Amritpal? @@narendraSingh-cl6ps You might find it strange but Amritpal singh's "hot" speeches had no lies in them. His way of saying things attracted youth and he became the spokesperson to channelize this ideology. Believe it or not it is a death wish and he knows it too that the state wont leave him alive. I personally think that this ideology erupted all of a sudden cuz it was built up in the people for decades and there was nobody to channelize it. Most people who advocated sovereignty were killed off/crushed by the state or harrassed so much that they left the country.

Thankyou @shekar ji and the print for rightly highlighting the core issues behind all this drama. Majority of Sikhs don't support these so called saver of Sikhism but government should also address all these issues calmly keeping aside the vote bank politics. The national media is also responsible behind creating a sense of fear in society by the way they are covering these issues.

This thought process is the core reason for Khalistan demand. "We are separate", "we are different". What most Sikhs have been made to forget is, that they are Hindus. Just the way, British initially, and political parties later tried to divide Hindus into Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and recently Vokkaligas and Lingayats, today they Someone (political parties, foreign intelligence agencies) are trying to accentuate the feeling of being different. No Sikh would like to have a discussion on the origin of Sikhism. This video also is a step in the same direction; "Sikhs are not Hindus". I don't know how old you are but I remember in my childhood, many of my Sikh friends had blood relatives who were Non Sikh. Lot of people today question the history of eldest son of the family being made a Sikh as per tradition. There is no fear that Hinduism will digest Sikhism (this is what is being propagated). The basic concept of Hinduism is assimilation. We don't mind going to pray at a mazar or Gurudwara or even a church. Hinduism has Arya samajis (they tried this concept of you are different on them too) who don't believe in idols, but they are thriving, not demonised. My request is don't make it a slugfest, but keep the discussion civil. P.S. I read blasphemy of Deras below. so this edit. Blasphemy is not a concept native to India or any Indian religion or sect. We are meant (encouraged to) to ask questions and find better answers. Blasphemy is a Muslim or christian concept to protect their belief. And i really don't know, why people only from one community cry, And realise other, that they have done some short of favour for the country or the people of this country. If they really consider this country their own, then they should stop making people realising, that they fought for some neighbouring country. I never heard, Any Marathi or for instance any rajput, gorkha, haryanavi jaat for asking anything or realising their fellow countrymen or women, that what sacrifices they have done for the country. And other people will never do this. Because, when you do something for your motherland, you do it without any expectations. The real problem of Punjab is too much vanity, ego, overconfidence, sense of entitlement, superiority complex, gun culture, and drugs.

Name One political freedom fighter between 1931 and 1945 apart from Bhagat Singh as he martryed on 1931. You will not find one name in this list coz most of the jatt Sikh political class were supporting Sikh league and collaborating with British. Putting Congress/Nehru in power were part of the British plan!! In my state last time we saw a congress govt is in 1960s thanks to their hindi language stand they became history. 3)hindu saints or religious leaders didn't ask to slaughter sikhs but congress party did. If you want to blame Hindu's for that then what about the kanishka bombings and over 25000 deaths during the punjab insurgency between 1980s to 90s. This is such a dumb argument against people who support khalistan. It doesn't make sense because the motivation for khalistan is not the sikh Empire. The khalistan movement originated because the Sikhs felt discriminated due to the central government's policy in regards to the Punjabi subha, water disputes and other causes.

If same logic used by Sikhs has to be employed in general, same can be applied to Maharashtra and Southern regions. How many times should one pay attention to one particular community? Should we ask for reinstatement of the Maratha Empire now? There are Gurus and babas all over. Win minds of people rather than demanding banning sects and proselytysing But yes dhongi Babas in general need to be behind prison. Ram Rahim or anyone if they are suspected of crimes as he is.

In India .. a sense of 'victimhood' .. is a default setting. Ask anyone.. a landlord, a peasant, any person from "lower" or "higher" caste, the economically middle class, the upper class or the lower & lower middle class, a celebrity or a nobody .. even a politician .. everyone will play a victim & exploit his grievance. That's coz India has not 'refreshed' itself with a 'new deal' .. so there seems to be no purpose to people's lives & negativity sets in. Just uttering periodic social homilies does not rejuvenate people. Add to that, the reactionary (rather than proactive) , laid back attitude that lacks scientific temper .. has decayed the society into negativity. A new positive deal needs to be devised .. all inclusive. Though I do have well reasoned doubts about the Muslims .. Their control lies outside the country & hence untrustworthy.

Hypocrisy is that the landlords play the victim card and not the poor migrants that travel thousands of kilometres to work on their fields. I strongly believe that the government should not give in to such victimhood. The only difference between this particular victim card and others is that in this case a large section of the people live abroad and make a lot of noise.

I highly recommend checking the ground reality. I am from Punjab, and I can tell you most of the Sikhs do not want Khalistan but the issues that are raised in the video are quite real and they will keep simmering if the government is not serious.

punjab doesn’t deserve such high attention from national media. In terms of population it doesn’t come in top 10, in terms of gdp and gdp per capita it doesn’t come in top 10, also if anyone gives an excuse that punjab feeds the nation, no it doesn’t, In terms of wheat and sugarcane UP is top producer state of India, while west bengal produces most rice.

If these 4 reasons are the root cause then why is the Khalistan support so strong amongst the NRI Sikhs ??.... I also grew up right from my college years to university education from Chandigarh (PU) . 90% of my chuddy buddies are Sikhs . Though ashamed to classify my friends this way. I now feel there is lot of fundamentalisms creeping in now especially in youth who fail to take off in their career and are misguided on social media

Sikhs are the most pampered people in India. No other group is so highly represented across everything. Look at Bollywood, pop music, media, army, businesses etc. In every Indian town, especially in the North, Sikh are doing big business, seamlessly interacting with locals. Hindu flocks to Sikh Gurudwara etc. I feel one of the reasons why some Sikh didn't acknowledge their privileged position in Indian society is because they feel they deserve it. The superiority complex and deep seated thinking that they are a martial race by the virtue of them being Sikh and Hindus are weak and bad looking people etc is very much deep in them. A lot of Sikh will talk about 1984 but will be totally silent about the rest of the incident before and after. And a lot of these men are full into conspiracy theories.

No one's silent about incidents before and after. Whenever 1984 is spoken about, appropriate space is given to the hindus targeted for their faith. Even those who went to jails for the killings say they regret the killings of innocent hindus but unfortunately I have always seen a hindu (not using it flippantly) justify the 1984 killings of innocent sikh pilgrims and the sikh carnage. Bollywood has had to course correct but it will make u more aware if u see the movies of even 10 years back when sikhs were presented as a joke. Do u remember even a single mention of anything related to sikhs in ur history books.. it was common gor people to bully the sikh chap outside punjab. I have grown up witnessing this. So please, maybe educate yourself a little more. Not justifying the current activities but akal toh lagao

It's the mindset of everyone I've seen in Punjab, Hindus don't even matter. Hindus never justify 1984. Even Modi has said that it was a massacre and black day for Indian democracy. Hindus were even ashamed. It goes against our narrative that Sikh are our brothers. Hindus are fundamentally brought up reading about Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Nanak. In my Hindu school, all the Sikh holidays etc were celebrated and guru were given huge reverence. Bollywood is more of a Punjabi and Urdu industry. Sikhs are over glorified, showing them as patriotic, high class individuals. Sikh are shown as brave, one man army, full of passion and rich. You can take small instances and you can paint whole Bollywood like that but it's totally opposite of what you are saying. Talking about history books, well I've read about Gurus in history books and the whole of India knows about them. But remember, India is a big country. Our population is 1.3 billion. We have multiple cultures. History books are tailored towards all not one particular community. Lastly, I've seen a lot of Sikh individuals in school and some were bullied and some were not. It depends upon person to person. I've seen a lot of Sikh bullying others like Biharis, Marathis etc. You need to realise that in multicultural society people face these things but it's not exclusive to Sikhs.

Isn't it time that national and state leaders listen to the grievances of the Sikhs and try to resolve them? For starters, the easiest would be to stop all conversion of the Sikhs by Christian missionaries. Secondly, why are the so-called Babas being given prolonged paroles? Any release of Bandi Singhs might endanger security unless some are no longer considered security threats.

1. No Sikh is hurting. 2. Some mercenaries masquerading as Sikhs are hurting. 3. U can't call these mercenaries who are on.the rolls of Muslims and white race as Sikhs. 4. Sikhs are a proud race who follow the path shown by gurus and who hv always protected the Hindus. After all the eldest Hindu born joined the Sikh path.

I do not think we can imagine India as becoming a hindu rastra. This is because India is a country that has many religions. If India can become a hindu rastra why cant it become a Sikh rastra or a muslim rastra or a christian rastra?

It's actually hypocritical how Sikhs cock a snook at the Deras, but don't make a squeak about churches popping up in rural Punjab out of nowhere. FYI, the world's fourth-largest church is in the making in Punjab. I wonder why. Does it have anything to do with the Canadian dream? The SGPC fights with the RSS when it helps these converts back into Sikhism, but doesn't even do so much as protest against people like Bajinder Singh and Ankur Narula.

There is so much hypocrisy in your video. The BJP did not hold power in the 70s and 80s, yet you are trying to justify the idea of "Khalistan" by calling it "Sikh Rashtra" and comparing it with "Hindu Rashtra". The Hindu Rashtra does not want to break up India like Khalistan does. If Khalistani Sikhs were to say, "I want to make the whole of India Khalse", then I wouldn't have a problem with it. As a legend once said, "Be liberal, Not liberandu."

what sgpc did to hinduism , same christianity did to sikhism sgpc removed all symbols of our culture from gurudwaras which were earlier called dharmshalas, these people have terrorised the sc population, gurus talked about daya, maryada, bhakti , but what you see in punjab is kaat do, maar do, killing innocents over blasphemy

The only reason we see these separatist protests in our country is because of the impotency of government in power both in state and centre. Anyone who question integrity of country or takes law in their hands to foment separatism if dealt with iron hands we wouldn't see this ever happening again.

Honestly some of these are complaints of what would be a religious state and not too different from what Hindu conservatives complain about, especially what pertains to conversions. However we are a secular state, ideally we shouldn't even have blasphemy laws or anti-conversion laws and we can't really stop deras to stop their stupidity much like we can't stop any self fashioned Hindu gurus. Ram rahim being given bail to keep flaunting so that politicians can court him for votes however is definitely a failure of state, although its puzzling to me why people from this region keep following self styled godman with very questionable moral aptitude be it ram rahim or aasaram.

One of the big issues with sikhs today is not understanding their own religion , Guru Nanak ji was someone who was against castism, singh and kaur were given to eradicate caste and have a common identity. But castism prevailed, there should not be a thing called dalit sikhs but there is and due to that injustice , they will obviously convert to christianity , who is giving them more inclusion and equality.

Punjabi Jatt Sikhs are racial , I remember in Chandigarh in our college we UP wallas were called Bhaiyaas. Whereas my town in UP was nearer to Chandigarh than their home town.

Don't worry they have habit to lick shoes of richer ones and deprecate poorer ones. Ones UP get developed the will come for truck driving there as well. They fear force (Afghanistan and Pakistan) and misinterpret respect as subjugation.

Well, I cannot but chuckle at the issues you have raised in this video and article. The same kind of problems like conversion, muslim exceptionalism, illegal immigration and denial of heritage and history had made the Hindu conservatives discontented and angry. However, in those days there were no article by any reputed journalist about these issues. The Print was not there but you as a journalist were there. The intellectuals, or psuedo-intellectuals laughed at these questions and were dishonest. They did not engage these questions but either defamed those who raised these (i.e Arun Shourie), or spread malicious propaganda against the Hindu community. In fact, it was only after the second victory of BJP, that many of these issues like psuedo-secularism was engaged with by a few journalists or political commentators. Your own article after the Ram Temple Judgement comes to mind. The fact is, if these issues were engaged with in the true spirit of democracy, the present majoritarianism would have been largely avoidable.

The fedual castes with martial traditions are not finding their "desired place" in modern society where there is equality of opportunity and merit .They thus hanker back to old glory and other such reactionary ideologies Instead of being cowered by this, the state should initiate land reforms and give rights of land ownership to actual tillers who dont belong to the feudal castes . This problem has only this solution. Remove the strnaglehold of feudal castes over land and over means of production.

When a sikh asks "Why can not we have a Sikh Rastra? Secession is seditious and unconstitutional which is basically what Khalistan is. Whereas Hindu Rastra does not need to carve out a state rather it urges to change the word "secular” that was illegally inserted (42nd amendment) durring emergency by Indra Gandhi Govt.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar said that there are 3 kinds of Dictatorship threat for Indian Democracy 1. Hindu Rashtra Dictatorship 2. Communist Dictatorship 3. Islamic Rashtra Dictatorship If Hindu Rashtra came. The Lower castes communities have to face atrocities just like they were before 1947. Upper castes Hindus have committed unspeakable atrocities for 2000 years. And they are still facing atrocities this today. If Upper Castes Hindus will make a Hindu Rashtra. Then we will make a Bahujan Buddhist Rashtra. Jai Bhim.

We seem to have no ideological disagreement on government intervention in religious or social concerns. It’s across all parties. Not surprising I guess with Indians of all religions being among the most religious people.

Surprised that economy and lack of education and competitiveness finds no mention in SG’s analysis.

We waste so much time in establishing religious boundaries around us that we forget at the end of the day we all want a peaceful and healthy life. I think the quicker we move away from religious division the faster we can pressurize politicians to do their jobs which is to provide a safe clean environment for everyone to prosper.I miss the eloquence and intelligence of politicians like Vajpayee et al that gave our country a sense of normalcy and calm yet a positive outlook, well I guess I am clutching at straws..wishing all the best to my fellow Sikhs who give us food and protect our country that they guide us through this situation in peace and we in turn listen to their grievances and work with them.
