Four Pass Loop In a Day Trail Run Guide - Colorado Classics!

The Four Pass Loop is a Colorado classic trail run or backpacking trip. Rick and I took down this 27mile 8,000ft loop in a day. The trail starts/ends at Maroon Lake and continues on to Buckskin Pass, Trail Rider Pass, Frigid Air Pass and finally West Maroon Pass. This was filmed in late September. There are other variations of this loop that I talk about in the full guide.

Beast mode dude. I did it as a two nighter. I did counter clockwise too and going up Frigid Air on day two was one of the toughest climbs I’ve had. Awesome hike.

If you've got a 4x4 with decent clearance you can also do this from the lead king basin trailhead kind of near the crystal mill. 27-28 miles. Start heading towards Geneva lake then turn right and you'll run into the loop about a mile from the turn. The trail to the loop was slightly overgrown when I did it.

@@ertatta The Geneva Lake TH (aka Lead King Basin TH) is about as close as you can drive to Snowmass Lake as far as I know. If you're comfortable driving Devil's Punchbowl then yes technically you can take a 4×4 to the Geneva Lake TH from CB but it's way easier from the Marble side. The West Maroon trailhead is easier from the CB side and I'm pretty sure it's mostly just a gravel road but I'm not as familiar with that side.

Great video. Learned a lot, but I am still confused about the Bear Can rule (assuming you took some snacks). Is it because you are not overnighting it that you don’t need a Bear Canister?

  • @TheVirtualSherpa

Correct - the bear cannisters are only required for overnights.

This question might be a tall order, but I'm trying to create a list of hikes that will enable me to hike flat terrain at between 12 and 14,000 ft. Example: hike up 2000 feet of gain, then walk on a pass/saddle for 3-4 miles at high elevation and then come back down. (Hope that made sense. I love hiking up to summits, but, I would really love to just hike up there on kind of flat ground instead of just turning around and hiking back down.) Thanks for all you do.

Check out hikes from Loveland Pass, Independence Pass, Berthoud Pass, Red Mountain Pass etc. In general, the driveable mountain passes are going to likely be your best bet for the hiking you are looking for. Loveland has a bunch of stuff: Sniktau, Grizzly etc.
