I love your videos because I can hear and see the rhythm. Some teachers explain using mathematics but for me that's hard because when the teacher speaks math, I can't hear it. But when you perform the rhythm and I can see how it is written that makes understanding the rhythmic pattern easier to grasp.
The way I learnt this when I was a kid was to say "Pass the god damn butter" on each hit.

I don't know why but I love this rythm. It activates something in me.
For years I struggle and struggle in practicing polyrhythm(s) and give up hope, while I thought for it's an impossible task. As a drummer for more then 40 years my taught was, it's burned in my brain to play equal and dividable rhythms. This is your second video I watch, and I learned to play 2 polyrhythms in 10 minutes. THIS IS AMAZING..REALLY!! Thank you mate! 💯😃😃😃

If you want to play polyriddim you'll need a lot more than 4/3 poly-rythm
I searched for thousands of years looking for how to play polyrhythm and got nowhere toward how to do it. I thought I was going mad. Then this. Thank you. So simple it is!
Thank you so much for these videos! They clearly explain how to understand these rhythms. Much appreciated!
Thank you! I could not wrap my head around doing this at all. But your video was the only one that made it so simple and then it clicked instantly
Thank you. Really straightforward and simple video to follow with a percussion background
Thanks for this very clear and informative explanation!
Great Thank you. My teacher passed this on with the phrase "Pass The Salt And PepPer" sorted my problem in Moonlight Sonata

Thank you so much! This helped a ton. I have struggled for months with this but after this video I picked up after 5 minutes! :0 I'm didn't know I could do this lol
This is a phenomenal presentation. Fantastic work. It was also the solution to my problem, a thousand blessings to you sir. The visual of the W pattern was like a cheat code for me. I was doing it just fine before the video, with my fingers that is, and thinking way too hard, couldn't find the rhythm of it in my chest... after the video- I'm doing it flawlessly, i can feel it, enjoy it, and I'm also putting in much less effort.
Love this guy ! Super understandable and a great voice
Thought this video wasn't what I wanted at a glance. After going to a few others, turns out it was. Very helpful!
The dividing into 12 helped a lot! Thank you so much ❤

Thanks Jerry for I've been trying to explain what you so eloquently stated. For me as a composer/arranger I hear everything the note and the rhythm. But for me to explain what I am composing and hearing in my mind through SUBDIVIDING it just does not work for me. Cause an Artist may be well versed in SUBDIVIDING but can't hear the rhythmic pattern.
Really helpful mate. Thanks.

levan polka violinists don’t typically have to play polyrhythms in most classical repertoire. Though they are conservatory trained, things may still be difficult for them.
I’ve always been decent with rhythms, but as a tenor drum player, often found myself scratching my head at dci music. Thank you so much
Excellent very clear demonstration and method. What's fascinating to me is that once you chart it out and play it using this method of analysis, it suddenly becomes effortless - the brain just assimilates the overall pattern and you don't need to think about the underlying mathematics at all.
EXCELLENT! Thank you
Need a silent loop of the last part. Good stuff. Thx

My jazz repertoire thanks you!
it’s weird, for me my brain never thinks of playing two separate rhythms, but rather when to play. idk maybe i’m thinking about poly rhythms completely wrong but knowing when to play the next beat seems to come easier then playing sixteenths with one hand and triplets with the other or telling my brain to do that.
One minute and I got it while it was so confusing before. This is a really good visualization, but could you add a bar to show where it is currently? That'd help even more
It would be very helpful to get some demonstration on how to practice the complex polyrhythms with a slower tempo and then gradually speeding it up to catch up with the overall normal pace of the piece.
can you demonstrate those examples on the piano thank you?
1:15 they are put together, for those that want to repeat quickly.
Thankk youu!!!

Summer Moon, composed by Florence B. Price contains this polyrhythm in one of the passages
super useful 🤩
OMGGGGGG THANK YOU
This is awesome. Useing math to put any polyrhythms together is a great way. For me who wasn’t great at math when I was just learning music, I was taught to use the saying “Sausage egg and bacon.” It’s how I teach my younger students.
This made it easy
Kinda flows nicely
thanks
el grafico tiene un error, se encuentra dibujado los tresillos en las semicorcheas y las semicorcheas en los tresillos
This can be heard two different ways. 1. 3 bars of 2/4 (simple duple) 2. 1 bar of 12/8 (compound quadruple)
I just discovered I did this rythmn unconcsiously with my feet and now I can do it on command :)
1 e & a 1 tri plet From these two we can make 1 tri a but how to notate this?
It's like a bossa nova beat..cool
Really helpful for getting me to do it physically, but I still can't manage to isolate them in my head while doing it. If I try to stop one hand in the middle of doing it, my other hand struggles too, which indicates I don't truly have it separated in my head. Not the fault of the video of course, just my brain being stubborn
This is what the left and right hand on the piano are doing in “Fake Empire” by the National, right?
How would this be played swung?
In Vietnam, Bolero songs are composed with 3:4 polyrhythms
oooh I thought it was like 4/4 and 4/3 being played on top of each other, I see now
Cool video. For those having trouble. Repeat after me: Kick-The-Sil-Ver-Buc-Ket :-) Both hands together on Kick. Right hand on Kick, The, Ver, Ket. Left hand on Kick, Sil, Buc. Stay healthy.

I dont understand it. How di you know that the 16th go in 12 in threes?
@Soarvivor
19 күн бұрын
There are 4 16th notes in 1 beat (quarter note), so as we’ve broken 1 beat into 12 sub-beats, 12/4=3 sub beats per quarter note.
IM NOT CRAZY IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO SAYS SEV WHEN COUNTING BEATS OH MY GOD
does not explaining it with sub divisions makes it harder to beginers¿¿ isnt it easier to understand with just a 1/4 notes ¿

Isn't this a polymeter, not a polyrhythem? A polyrhythm would be a 3 count and 4 count that always hit 1 at the same time.
@rustys9043
2 жыл бұрын
they do always hit 1 at the same time
But if you want to have your beats be 3 long and have the 12 be the whole bar, that'd be 4/3, which is not allowed
do this but with Riddim lmao
