    Tom, I love that your introductions are always upbeat and enthusiastic regardless of how you feel on the game. Some reviewers wear their opinion on their sleeves from the get go and I feel that there’s no need to continue watching. Keep up the great work!

    That's a really good nuanced review. I love the mix of elements in the game. I made a building rules reference for my wife and should upload it to BGG. The one thing you didn't highlight was just how crazy it gets trying to understand the board state as the game goes on - it honestly overwhelmed my wife in both 2 and 3P games, and she loves games like The Colonists and A Feast for Odin... it's just the particulars of this board and the connections and colours that she just found to be too much by the end.

    You should really try the Great Zimbabwe. Similar in some ways, but a little simpler to grasp. Plus, more variation with the gods. Ready to try this one and compare them.

    This game seems like a curiosity, something I wouldn't play many times, but would liked to try it. Not sure if I would have like to own it. Will buy used-seems like there's many of this game for sale used.

    I liked the game. You need to think a lot but I find it that after playing it more than twice you really do things more smoothly without thinking too much. I played it about 4 times already and each time it becomes shorter. The placement is confusing only because you need to remember it and player aid will help there. Instead of looking on the resource board it is better to look on your own character board and resources card because you have an aid written on them that tells you all the buildings that you can build with those resources all the way from tier 2 to 3, including which resource you`ll need access to in order to build them.

    I am trying to like this game but after two tries it's hard... I have a better grasp of the rules now but the manual still vexes me to no end; it is just so poorly organized and frustratingly confusing on occasion! Also, art-wise it just doesn't pop - it's very bland-looking and hard to get excited over. I liked that all the prestige buildings you can build reference different locations and adventures in the Gloomhaven game itself, and there are enough interesting mechanics to make playing this game worthwhile. But I think a big problem with it is that it's not complicated because it enhances the gameplay in some way (i.e. Twilight Imperium). It's complicated for complexity's sake; almost like Isaac Childres looked at a bunch of board game mechanics he liked in a lot of other games (Glory to Rome, Puerto Rico, Race for the Galaxy, etc.) and decided to cram them all into one game without a lot of thought given to how well it's all going to work together. It might stick around in my collection for another couple of games, but it hasn't earned a permanent spot on the shelf.

    my only issue with the game is how distracting the board could get after the players have built most or all of their buildings and tiles, you need to continuously keep track of your resources and the busy board doesn't help, but other than that it's good game.

    The game really isn't that complex, but the rulebook is a bit of a mess and makes it sound more complicated than it is. There's just a few important rules about how to place things that you need to grab onto.

    If this game didn't have "Gloomhaven" in the title and was the work of an unknown game designer, it would have been murdered in the reviews. Murdered I say. Seriously... it's a tile placement game in which players constantly need to check the rulebook about how to place tiles. Some tiles must go in specific places because of theme (I hated those). On top of that, the scoring is incredibly convoluted and the game is really long.

  • @elayeth

    Stefano I disagree. If it didnt have „Gloomhaven” in the title it would have probably been reviewed by Heavy Cardboard and such and would have not been played by the wrong target audience... In the end it would have probably less negative reviews after all.

    I agree with all your comments Tom, except for your middling to good score for the game. I loved it, and I think that’s the subjective bit. It’s very simple to pick up, a couple of turns in you know what everything does (aside from a few minor situational rules); but form that point on the game just keeps expanding with choices and possibilities. It’s a heavy game, but only in so far as the player wants it to be. You could easily sit there and take money each turn and never follow, if everyone is doing that it’s fine. But everyone is making great choices, and possibly great opportunities for you to follow. All of this you said, but I’m a full on 9/10 for this! I also love Gloomhaven and the world, so there is that bias.

    I think this review just goes to show that Isaac isn't the God designer everyone claims him to be. Yes, he created Gloomhaven (even though my own opinion on that game is meh) but this tells me that he got lucky with its popularity. Two of his three games (Founders and Forge War) have been mixed on what people think about them with neither really garnering praise either.

  • @a1investigations433

    @a1investigations433

    That's silly. He didn't get lucky with Gloomhaven's popularity. People don't like it because Isaac rolled a natural 20, they like because they enjoy it. Most (all) designers have good games and bad games, loved games and hated games.

    This really isn't appealing to me and that's nothing to do with my meh opinion of Gloomhaven. It just looks too complex for what it should be and every time I see it being played, it looks so drab in aesthetics and the game just goes on forever - I know I'd be going mad with the downtime. It looks like something Splotter would make and that's the last association I want with any game!

    Horrible review. You stick cards in the front of the camera just inches away for less than 2 seconds... when the camera finally adjusts, you see the image for less than 1/2 a second. This repeated forced camera focus actually causes people's eyes to 'attempt' to adjust for the camera, my eye literally bother me after watching from minute 1-3.
