"Hey Jealousy" is the MOST 90s song. I don't mean "Best". I mean it tells the story of the whole decade in one song. From the history of how it came to be (Doug wrote it) to cheerful sound that has some truly depressing lyrics.

A history lesson for anyone interested: Doug Hopkins, a co-founder and the primary songwriter of Gin Blossoms, was suffering from depression and subsequent alcoholism, which got worse once the songs he wrote (this one and Hey Jealousy, specifically) started blowing up and the band got more exposure. Instead of helping their bandmate and friend, the other members refused to continue working with him, fired and replaced him, and refused to give Hopkins $15,000 of withheld earnings unless he signed a majority of his royalties away. He signed his rights away, hopped around the Tempe, AZ music scene for a while, before taking his own life in 1993. There’s a reason why these old Gin Blossoms songs have so much more weight to them, as opposed to their more recent pop-infused releases. The remaining members should be ashamed. That is not how you treat a bandmate and the main reason for your success. RIP Doug Hopkins, you were a legend and deserved much better than you were given.
