If you find any form of human remains not in a marked and designated grave/sanctuary you are supposed to alert authorities. It’s proper protocol so that they can rule out foul play. He did the right thing legally and morally.

Dumping the ashes in the river in a plastic bag and plastic box is disrespectful to the environment. Plastic will decay for 100+ years in the river. Open the bag, scatter the ashes, and recycle the plastic.

Dear everybody saying that “it was wrong for him to remove those remains, respect the dead” dude, he had to do something. He had to have closure for whatever situation had happened. Plus, he put the remains back.

This isnt necessarily disturbing to find but I find it strange how the remains were in a bag instead of being spread around. Sad and weird

Who else thought he found like a arm or something

I think the odd thing is the ashes weren’t poured out into the river. When someone has a final wish to be cremated and their ashes put out somewhere specific, it usually means poured out to mix with the area. It seems the executor of this persons final wishes were very lazy and just dumped the whole box out there. If someone wants their ash remains kept together, they are usually kept in an urn and at a loved ones house. NOT in a box at the bottom of a river. Maybe the police were even more lazy and wanted to leave this alone. But since there’s a name/label on the bag, it should of been retrieved and the police could log used the mortuary to find the family and notify them that the remains were not disposed of correctly and properly dispersed in the area. Then the family can do it right. Maybe I’m wrong, and this way is common, but I find it unusual to just dump a box with a labeled bag of cremated remains in it.

I would have thought the officer at least would have looked up the name to see whether the box might have been stolen from someone’s home, initially thinking that it might contain something valuable (looked like it could have held jewellery or something), and then when they got to their car or whatever realising what it actually was and throwing it, box and all, into the river. I would have expected the officer to at least have looked up the name (he mentioned there was a name or name of a crematorium on the bag - which could have enabled them to trace it), and contacted the family to double check that it was their intention for the ashes to be in the box in the river. I would hate to think that some family had their loved one’s ashes stolen and with a simple phone call they could have been returned. If the family confirmed that they wanted the ashes in the box in the river (which seems odd but I accept maybe this was their intention) then they could have been handed back to the family to return to the river how they saw fit. However I would also have thought that the police might have suggested to them that just dumping the whole bag of ashes in a box near to where the public often swim/dive maybe wasn’t the best idea. Sure, people can do why they wish with their loved one’s ashes, but they are not permitted to pollute the waterways with plastic and other material.

Someone could have robbed a house not knowing what that box was. Not everyone knows what a cremation box looks like. Then threw it out there and the family may be wondering.

Truth is...this happens all the time. People cremate their loved ones and then put them in lakes and bodies of water as that person has a connection to it. maybe they spent their lives going there...maybe they had a cabin there...I've heard of this often. Glad you called the police.

No. You can scatter ashes in oceans / bodies of water. Where I live, Texas law also states that unless the container is biodegradable, the cremated remains must be removed from the container before being scattered.

The family should have spread the ashes, not dump the whole box, when it does absorb into the environment now you have plastic, family not to smart.

yeah idk man.. they should have tried to contact the family. it’s very rare (almost never happens?) that people throw the entire box, envelope and all, of remains into an area. usually they sprinkle it or sprinkle half of them and keep the rest. not to mention that it’s actually illegal to spread remains anywhere, so it’s kinda stupid that the cop had you just throw them back?

Sometimes remains like this are found left behind in rental properties or sherriffed sale and abandoned estates. People throw the remains in rivers, lakes, ocean, etc. The more unscrupulous people throw cremated remains in trash. I'm not saying that's the case here, but without some research, it was a little premature to put them back right away.

Marlee : Was probably someone’s husband or wife & was put there where they used to go fishing. Was the right thing to put it back, RIP .

Is it illegal to spread the ashes freely? Why would anyone dump someone's ashes in the river contained in a plastic bag and a box? I can't imagine that someone who says that they want their ashes to be thrown into the river had inside a plastic bag and a box in mind. I'd be mighty pissed if I died and found out people put my ashes in a plastic bag and threw the bag into the river.
