Day 2 (This Video)
SOLVED: 💔 Missing 24-year-old Jacob VanZant Found
• SOLVED: 💔 Missing 24-y...
Day one plunges us into the depths of despair as we meet Joanna, Jacob's anguished mother, and Jessica, his devoted sister, who share their determination to find him. Jacob, 24 years old, went missing while on a mission to deliver sushi from a local restaurant in Lodi to his girlfriend in Stockton. The search begins at the last known cell phone ping, a bridge just east of the area.
Guided by Jared's expertise and aided by an unwavering community of family and friends, the search scours the treacherous waters, driven by the urgency to find Jacob. They explore the ferry crossing, a critical location due to its proximity to the road where a high-speed accident could lead to tragedy. The team discovers multiple submerged vehicles, meticulously diving into each one, hoping to unveil the answers they desperately seek.
Day Two: Triumph Amidst Tragedy
Part two unfolds with a surge of anticipation as Jared's team zeroes in on the pivotal breakthrough. After extensive sonar scanning, they identify a vehicle of interest near the ferry crossing resembling Jacob's white Honda Pilot. With a mix of hope and trepidation, the divers navigate the depths, clinging to the possibility of closure for Jacob's family.
The moment of truth arrives as the wreckage of Jacob's vehicle is located, with its front gravely damaged. It becomes apparent that Jacob fought fiercely for survival, evidenced by the closed side windows and his valiant attempts to escape out the broken rear window. The tragic nature of the accident unfolds, revealing that Jacob's untimely demise was the result of a high-speed collision with the water and drunk driving.
With the absence of foul play, the docuseries delves into the intricate details of the recovery operation. Jared, alongside local authorities, ensures the utmost care and respect as Jacob's body is carefully extracted from the vehicle. The license plate, bearing the unique identifier 5JBC311, serves as a poignant reminder of Jacob's presence and the answer it brings to his grieving family.
Through candid interviews, raw emotions, and personal accounts, the docuseries provides an intimate look into the profound impact of Jacob's disappearance on his loved ones and the resilience they display during this unimaginable tragedy. It underscores the significance of community support, the unwavering pursuit of truth, and the healing power that comes with finding answers.
Unveiling the mystery in the search for Jacob stands as a testament to the enduring strength of family bonds and the extraordinary efforts made by compassionate individuals to bring solace to those left behind. Prepare to embark on an emotional journey filled with sorrow, hope, and the indomitable spirit of a family determined to find their lost loved one.

Based on our assessment and the family's perspective, it is believed that Jacob remained conscious when his vehicle plunged into the water. As the impact triggered the airbag and water began rushing through the broken front windshield, the side windows remained intact and could not be shattered nor could the doors be opened. In a desperate attempt to escape, Jacob swiftly maneuvered toward the broken rear window. However, he became entangled with the rear headrests, ultimately taking his last breath while halfway out of the vehicle. It is the shared belief that had Jacob possessed a Window Breaker to swiftly shatter a side window, he could have escaped within seconds instead of grappling with the challenge of traversing two rows of seats and exiting through the rear window. This poignant observation highlights the potential for a different outcome had the means for quick escape been readily available, leaving us to ponder the possibilities and the heartbreaking "what ifs." 💔 WINDOW BREAKERS SAVE LIVES! 😢 Are you prepared if your vehicle goes into the water, catches fire, or you need to rescue an infant or pet trapped in a hot car? I was watching a recovery from the Adventures with purpose partners "Chaos Divers." They were recovering possible suicide that was days, possibly one week old. Not sure if it was considered a suicide or not, but when they found said vehicle, it wasn't anything but a shiny glare on sonar. No part of it resembled a vehicle whatsoever. In Jacob's case, he and his vehicle were under water for several weeks. That glare that Jacob's vehicle made resembled something new to being underwater for a short period of time. Sonar reflected off a smooth surface.

Ahhh mike C'mon. Everybody knows he said it to give her some peace. Actually there is far worse ways to die and to be fair he's a diver so perhaps he was just being completely honest with stating that drowning would be his preferred way of passing. I don't think anybody wants to pass over suffering. Sadly as it is it would have only been minutes and he would have gasped for breath and his lungs filled with water, its really that quick... as opposed to someone slowly dying from cancer or dementia.

I dunno y'all. I heard that drowning while terrifying in the beginning only because of those survival instincts, becomes quite peaceful in the end. Like the last minute or so is peaceful, and you don't even feel it. That's what I've read from people who have drowned but we're resuscitated. This one guy said suddenly the urge to breathe just went away and he was just aware of everything around him and the next thing he knew he was coughing up water on the shore and was way out of it.
The "alright come on buddy" nearly brought me to tears, the fact that he still treats him like a person and not like an objective just goes to show the care. You are doing great work man.

This is one of the most heart wrenching rescues of deceased ever. That sonar scan image was so tragic and shocking. I can't believe how such a dangerous road intersection can be allowed next to a waterway. Going by the damage to the car the impact into water must have been at very high speed.

My late husband died of suicide in Rocky Mountain National Park. Hikers found him, and disrespected his remains, as they found him 45 minutes after he jumped to his death. They took pictures and sent them to their friends and video calling him a loser. The park rangers and FBI told me days later during the investigation. No charges or harshness was given to those animals who thought it was funny and hurt our family. Dealing with FBI since it was on federal land they were not kind to us neither were rangers, the only kind persons involved was the reporters and the law enforcement of Fort Collins. I was thinking about this too. It makes you wonder if there are other missing people in those cars, if so my heart breaks for them and their families as well. I feel thankful living in a state inland because most of the waterways around CO are far from the rode. I also cannot believe how that entrance didn't have a gate or cameras. I think the city should take all those cars out as well as installing the proper safety measures including cameras to make sure that if someone does go into the water they are quickly found. I hope his mother is doing okay, this is so heartbreaking

@Cathy Swaim it is indeed the hardest of all rescue jobs. Being under water all alone, searching - and finding - people who have passed on, not only requires a lot of focus and energy during the intervention, but a whole lot of mental work afterwards as well. And it doesn't get easier or ever becomes a routine. Every intervention is personal and different. As a rescue diver, I can still see all of them when I close my eyes. I am fortunate enough to have one memory of a live one who went on to pass on several years later of old age instead of under his tractor that had rolled over into a pond... With the work Jared does, it is virtually impossible for him to find such consoling experiences, so he deserves every credit and praise for doing what he does. We can only hope that he finds solace in the peace he creates in people's hearts and that he has a solid coping mechanism in place...

The poor guy fought as hard as he could, and ALMOST made it out. That's no small feat, swimming over two rows of seats and out of the back glass. He was so close. A fighter to the end. Rest in peace, Jacob VanZant.

Sending you all my love and condolences all the way from the United Kingdom. I’m bawling my eyes out. The compassion and respect from Jared “let’s get you out of here buddy”, the police officers “WATCH HIS HEAD! Watch his head”, the heartbreak for his mom. I lost my dad back in ‘91 when the coast guests ice breaker ran over his tug boat. His 2 crew died instantly, my dad drowned. I often wonder if he was conscious and knew what was happening. My doctor (also the local coroner) told me he wasn’t but I’ve never been sure if he just told me what would make it easier for me. My dad’s biggest fear was to drown. RIP Jacob ❤ Much internet love to mom and his family ❤ RIP dad ❤

The way that Jared was talking to Jacob and bringing his body up was such a compassionate personal matter it was almost holy.
Jared did such a wonderful job consoling Jacob's Mom. His kindness to a near stranger in her worst moments was so touching. She will grieve for her son forever but at least she knows he did not choose to end his life and tried to escape. The not knowing if he was alive would be worse than knowing how he died. Kudos to the police for the respect they showed in recovering Jacob as well. Excellent job everyone! The still sonar image of Jacob trapped in and out of the car should be used as a Don't Drink and Drive promotion.
@Madison-iw8ix

Honestly, yes, if the family says it's okay to use the sonar image. If common sense won't stop people from drunk driving, then maybe fear will. It's really such a shame because this was 100% avoidable. He could've not drove, or asked someone else to drive him, or he could've not drank. Not only did he lose everything because of a stupid mistake, but his actions have caused irreversible damage to his family and friends. Ah, but hindsight is always 20/20.
How Jared remained so calm is beyond me. Takes real guts to be in that position and continue your job whilst stumbling on something so horrific.

I have never been in the situation of heaving to break such news to anyone, and I kept being shocked by how he put it. But then I'd think, what would be a better way to say it, and (at least for me) there honestly isn't. It's just the message that's horrible but it needs to be said, and by beating around the bush you only drag it out. I admire them for how they time after time deal with the close ones. I can imagine that's not something you'll ever completely get used to.

I've answered that call before. My brother and two of his friends were speeding down a country road. They lost control and went tumbling through the woods. A tree split the car in half; Which ejected one of our friends on impact. Our friend miraculously survived after a week long coma. My brother and our other friend died instantly. The accident happened the night before my birthday. I woke up to a call that my brother was identified as one of the passengers. He was 25

My condolences for the loss of your Mother. 💔 J lost my Mommy when I was only 5. Barely remember here only knowing that she was ALWAYS so loving & kind! Telling my so-called “father” to not hit us. To stop yelling at us when we were little. 😔 I miss her so very much & til’ this very day I still am the only one that really visits her grave & it still doesn’t have a headstone. 💔 This “former Father” doesn’t care to buy one. He doesn’t want to talk to me either. Calling me retarded, stupid, scum of earth, etc. Because I’m now disabled from a drunk driver that hit my own family’s van & gave me epilepsy. I still saved lives after that being a graduate w/ academic honors in medical field. I helped anyone in vehicle accidents. Also in hospital J saved a man’s life when a violent patient punched him on his head & gave him a large contusion on his right temporal lobe. He couldn’t stay awake! Tried knocking on nurses windows telling them to send patient to ER STAT; that patient is losing consciousness & he’s no longer coherent. They yelled at me. Telling me to shut up & leave them alone. I had to take care of him w/ ice & a washcloth. Trying to make do w/ what was available. Told them I’ll report them when I’ll be sent home. I helped many of patients there including the M.A’s. The patients started to believe in life and the M.A’s wanted to hire me. The psychologist didn’t understand why I was there and said he was sending me home. I said Apparently God sent me here for a reason. To help others. I lost 4 lbs. being there for 3 days. I’d starved because they’d not given me insulin. (Being type 1 diabetic!) I couldn’t eat. I only drank water & my glucose levels were really high!! They neglected to give me insulin! Even refused to give me long acting insulin necessary for type 1 diabetics. I said I’d report them and each day I awoke I’d go and help the individual w/ the injury on his skull. He was getting worse. I was having to go home but he was hard to understand because of his surgery 2x’s in past from lung cancer from smoking. Had hole in his throat. I still helped him w/ injury. Kept him awake and helped him w/ his injury. I told him to stay conscious and told him I must leave now but that I promise I’m going to have him sent to the ER. That I will report the staff that did us all wrong as well. To continue to believe in God and pray. He thanked me and hugged me. The other patients I had said goodbye to I hugged each of them and they were all crying begging me not to go. I had tears in my eyes. Telling them to be strong and remember what I sung to them about God. To believe that Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and that God is with you always. Pray and hold your head up! That I love them! Be strong! Even the Medical Staff I helped out were sad to see me go. I hugged them all. Told them I’ll think about coming back to work there. (I don’t know…my grandma & Uncle died at that hospital.) It’s a bad hospital. As you can tell. I will have to make changes to their treatment of patients and medical care demand they make changes! Which Will get me fired. Lol. Anyhow beautiful work that is done…it brought me to tears!!! I am glad they took care of recovering so many people and Jacob’s body as well. I was in tears. Hard to watch this. At least there is closure. He’s always going to be visiting his loved ones and always watching from Heaven above. 🥲🙏🕊️🤍

No matter how hard you try you can't get out. You don't even have time to think of what to do next. I remember thrashing around and then I stopped for whatever reason. I believe I was pulled out by two men, I remember that calm feeling too, right before one of them grabbed me by the back of my swimwear and started to pull me to the surface. I was diagnosed with PTSD after the incident, it's been 15 years. I was 6 maybe 7 then. The second time I went to a river with my cousin. 12, Summer break. College kids were tubing down the river, we were off of a little drop and to the other side kids were diving off of a ledge. I was holding onto a rock with my body partially submerged. The current was strong but since I was older I had a good grip. My little cousin unexpectedly jumped in, he couldn't swim. My aunt couldn't reach us in time. I don't know what I was thinking. I remember seeing his little body being swept away and I just let go of the rock. I don't know how I found him. Once I did I realized everytime I came up for air I was pushing him under the surface of the water. So I lifted his body as high as I could. I was completely under. I managed to get his legs over my shoulders and I just kept holding him up. I don't remember being afraid in those moments, I just wanted my cousin to be safe. A kid from highschool who was jumping off the ledge saw us. He was able to jump down and swim to us, pulling us to a shallow part of the river. I don't think I got air until he got us to that spot. Don't know what happened to that kid after that.
SO THANKFUL YOU ALL FOUND ANOTHER ONE TO BRING THEM BACK HOME. GOD BLESS THIS ENTIRE TEAM.
To see that he almost made it out,is just heartbreaking.Jacob’s mom and sister, and girlfriend, must be devastated,to see him like that.Thankyou for all of your care and compassion,in bringing Jacob home.
Parents worst nightmare is NOT KNOWING what happened to their missing child. I'm glad you guys were able to bring him home. Well done.
This was seriously the most devastating episode of these rescues. Know the baby is with the father. This is so heartbreaking for those left behind. The weight and memories this team must deal with, I surely hope they also seek help with all of its complexities.

I'm spiritual and feel they are together. I think after it happened there was regret and sadness but I believe he's embraced his fate and it has a lot to do w their child. I hear that passing over doesn't void one from feelings esp about how it happened. It doesn't make it less tragic but I know energy doesn't die, it's just transferred somewhere else. Along with all the people we LOVE in every lifetime. Love is the most powerful thing, it keeps us connected thanks to Source.
I totally agree, the officers are by far the best i had seen. The way they acted, the way of caring, and passionate about someones love on and allowing Jared and his team to do the FULL Recovery is amazing. I do not understand how Jared kept so calm this was a child he literally rescued, this wasnt human remains as bones this was a body. Mad props to jared to be so humanized and respectful to not only the live ones but to the dead as well, and for treating the dead as still a human being. Im an CNA and death scares me so mad props again to Jared and his team
😢im literally crying so sad R.I.P Jacob 😢 This one i will never forget Thank you Adventures with Purpose❤
Incredible work, Jared! I'm a 30 yr law enforcement veteran and I'm always blown away by the way you treat the families with such respect. It's a bitter sweet thing that you have had so much experience with death notifications. 23 families have been saved lifetimes of torment not knowing. Keep up the awesome work. I also. HATE to see the way some officers treat you guys. Way to stand up to them! You never let them discourage you!

Thank you for being one of the good ones. Detective Matt Thornton would definitely approve!! ❤
That first moment at the beginning of this video that showed the outline of a person trying to escape was simultaneously terrifying and heartbreaking

Shocking.
"Grief & Loss" is a 7- stage process of hopefully will eventually bring some "acceptance". This mother reacted "normal" to a critical incident. I think it is important to "allow" a person to grieve without telling them to "stop it". I will pray for these search team members to come together after a recovery, and "process" your thoughts and feelings in a private "Critical Incident Stress Management" group. Doing so reduces your chances of PTSD and burn out. Man, it helped in my own recovery from Katrina and post 9/11 work around the Pentagon. I will keep y'all in my prayers. Bless you all. Stay Safe
So compassionate with the family, and your calm explanations on what was going to happen were very reassuring. Most excellent work, sir. Condolences to the family.
If anyone who considers driving drunk could witness Jacob's mother's anguish, and know how this affects loved ones, surely they'd think twice. This story is indeed haunting, and many thanks to AWP and to Jacob's family for allowing this series to be shown in all of its harsh tragedy.

Incidentally, that gorgeous, touching song at the end is, "When Things Try to Tear You Apart," by Ben Wagner.

Agreed. Stop drunk driving. He was a young man, grew up with being told that in high school, but still made poor decisions. May god give his family the strength to overcome this news.

What’s sad is there are will always be idiots who think they are invincible drunk. And this story sadly shows the vulnerability of everyone drunk or sober.
Sending my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Jacob’s family and friends. Not only did this family lose their son, they lost a precious baby girl as well. I pray that they both may Rest In Peace. Thank you Jared and AWP for finding him and bringing him home. You handled this very delicately and, as a parent, I’m appreciative of the efforts you put forth. May God continue to bless you and keep you safe as you continue your search for lost loved ones. Also thank you to the sheriff’s department for the manner in which they handled Jacob as he was brought out of the water. They treated him with a great deal of dignity and respect. Also, the tow company, the excavator company, and the ferry driver need to be mentioned as well. Above and beyond.Thank you and God bless you all for your service, but also for the professional way this very tragic situation was handled.

You all are the very best of people bringing answers to absolutely devastated families who have NOT had answers for their loved one’s disappearance. Thank you for doing this and helping these dear people have some closure!

This story sure was a tear jerker....oh my gosh. A big thank you to this amazing guy who found Jacob's body. I was just amazed!! May he R I P.
As heart wrenching as this episode was, it was also heart warming to see the cooperation between AWP and law enforcement. The ingenuity of the extraction of the vehicle was beyond genius. So many people came together to help get Jacob home. This is by far the greatest AWP episode to date. Rest in peace Jacob, my heart goes out to his family and friends. It’s a relief to know he didn’t give up. The sonar image shows him reaching for the surface , proof that he really didn’t want to die.
