FOSTEX R8. SUPER 8 TRACK RESCUE

Фильм және анимация

Not powered up for many years, so I am not expecting anything from it at all this morning. Let's find out...
These machines suffer badly from cracked and brittle reel motor pulleys all these year later.
I want to make this machine run properly before I dispose of it, I intend to take it home over Christmas and sort it out.
This is a preview video of the initial inspection today to see what needs doing to it.
Many thanks to the people at the linked website for making such a great effort to document so much useful advice and technical help for all sorts of equipment.

Good video, there are many companies making fresh tape today eg Atr, Capture, Recording The Masters etc, as you say you get lots of oxide shed with some old tapes so if you are doing new recordings they must be done on new tape.

I dare to think how much a 10" pancake of quarter inch costs these days. Back then I think I was paying around £15 for 456 on a pancake.

Well worth bringing back to full operating order, decent machine. Looking forward to the next installment.

Should happen over the Christmas break. The only pity is that at home I won't have an 8 channel mixer so we'll have to make do with a pair of tracks, and the only tape I have is 1990's ampex. YUK

Nice to see an R8 fan, I'm building up a reel to reel recording section in my studio and I have three of these. I bought some 4030 Synchronizers to get them working together, all was going well this afternoon until one of the syncronisers bricked! Going to take that apart this eve and check it out, If I can fix it I'll have 21 channels of R8 (with three as SMPTE). I was going to buy some of the metal pulley wheels that Tascam Ninja sells, but they are so expensive, I bought two in the past and they work really well, but I'm just going to bung a load of glue on the existing ones as MZ suggested, I've used superglue in the past and that worked for a while, this time I'll use a 2 part epoxy. Didn't know about the capstan wheel rubbing though, so thanks for that! I'll check to make sure mine aren't rubbing. Really don't want to take the back off though, that looks so sketchy, I'd be scared of breaking the motor! One question for you, you might know the answer to, one of my units doesn't show the input levels on the LED meters, the actual LED's work as the fostex logo shows up when you turn it on, and the bottom level works when you activate record mode, it just doesn't show input levels. If you have any ideas about if that's fixable at all then please let me know! Thanks again for the vid!

check out using superglue and baking powder, or gorilla glue. I don't know why one machine wold not show input levels on the meter, sorry about that. Good luck with your machines, sounds like fun

Question, you mentioned using synchronizers for the three machines, are you using them alongside a DAW?

@@andriealinsangao613 No I'm just going straight into a master 2 track tape, I COULD hook them up to a DAW but the point of this for me is to use no digital technology!

Tip from me: don't bother with trying to glue the wheel on the capstan motor shaft. You will regret it in the end. Instead order metal wheel form tascamninja which is fastened with a screw. You will thank me later.

I am aware of tascamninja, thanks. £34 plus postage from greece, 2 -3 month lead time.

The fast reverse does not work on my Fostex. The pulleys both fall down. Can you really stick them on?

Yes you can. The motor shaft and pulley need to be spotless clean. Go watch some videos on youtube 'super glue and baking powder' and see how tough it is. Check the website linked in the description, they use two types of glue in the photos. I will be doing the glue repair over christmas, with a video..
