The divider is mainly for making the space in the crate smaller. Say you get a German Sheppard, if you only want to buy one crate you get the largest size and then use the divider when they are a puppy to make it smaller. They'll both feel more comfortable and less inclined to soil their sleeping area. If the crate has too much empty space their little brains think "that corner for eat/sleep, this corner for poop."

I'd recommend hanging onto the divider, actually. Remember the time that mom had no milk, so you had to separate her from the kittens, so they didn't hurt her trying to nurse? If you had the divider, you could have just divided the crate, one side for mom, and the other for the babies. I'm sure other situations that could benefit from a divided crate will pop up from time to time, as well.

I wish I could post pictures in the comments. I had a mama and 12 kittens. There was a colony in my backyard and neighbors yard. I don't think all 12 kittens were hers alone. I think there was two mama cats and one just didn't wanna parent so the one mama took over. Any way point to this comment is that I had to put two big cages like that together. We connected them with the front doors and i had access through the bigger side door. We had zip ties all over so there was no way of any escape. We had a lil table thing in there also so mama could have some time to separat from her babies as well. Until they learned how to jump and climb up there. But that was an adventure. Also it was in my outside enclosed porch area In the middle of summer so I had fans going for them and everything. It got super hot a for a week while I still had them outside. But they were well taken care of either way. Sometimes ya gotta make due. I'm thankful for having that area to be able to house them while the foster opened up space. There was no way I could keep them in my house with an open area bungalow type house. With three cats already and a small bedroom with no door to keep them enclosed.

This video could not have come at a more perfect time. I found a pregnant feral a few weeks ago and she had kittens in our spare bedroom. They are 15 days old today. We had no idea what to do, but I was relieved to see that I instinctually did pretty much exactly what you recommended. Instead of a metal kennel we got a travel canvas one with a top and two side openings, and we covered it with a blanket. She had the babies in there. They are pretty much the same age as the littles you have. It's so cute to see them grow!

I'm a little sad you decided on garage names, because when the baby fell out of the crate, I immediately thought, "Fall Out Boy." Then the screaming baby could be "Panic! The extra metal piece in the cage is meant to be used as a cage divider HOWEVER I made the very important discovery that most of them, with some effort and wall bending, can be hooked horizontally to the walls of the crate and made into a shelf or the "2nd floor of the kitty condo". Just poke some holes in a piece of cardboard cut-to-fit and zip tie it to shelf, add some fluffy blankets or a small bath mat folded-to-fit as padding and bam, comfy extra space for kitties to lounge.

@@saigefrederick3159 There is usually a state or local Landlord-Tenant Law that specifies how much notice a landlord must give before they can enter to inspect or do work they want to do. In WA it is 48 hours minimum. And you can ask to reschedule if you need to. This should give you some time to bring the "unofficial" residents to a friends place, temporarily stash them in the car or in carriers stacked in the bedroom closet with quilts and pillows to muffle any sounds...and the fan going...and music on. It worked for me once! Best wishes.

The divider is so that if you got a large breed of dog as a puppy, the space can be made smaller and more cozy for them during crate training. Crates can be expensive so getting a larger one that the puppy can grow into just makes sense.

So, I use the divider as a shelf with a blanket on it in my crate! It gives the cats/kittens a tiny bit more interesting space to play. However, my crate is a bit smaller than the one you got. Otherwise, I usually set my crate in a very similar fashion. Miscellaneous has quite a bit of tortitude, doesn't she? 🤣😻 Thanks for showing your setup! It helps me to know that I'm doing it right. 😁

The extra wire panel is the crate divider for crate training a dog. You start it out making the smallest area for a puppy, then gradually adjust to make their space larger as they get larger. Also helps to teach them to not pee/poop where they eat lol

We used wire cutters to trim that divider down. The piece we kept had the hooks on one side and is about 12 inches deep. using zip ties we were able to install it as a little shelf at the far end of the crate, giving our fosters some extra "floor" space and a place to perch when they're confined in the crate. It's been great!

I trapped what seemed to be a feral kitten near the start of the pandemic. It was probably about 10 weeks old. The barehand capture did not work (ouch). So, I put food out for a few nights and was able to trap her in a regular cat carrier with a little draw string. She was not happy. We had four cats of our own at the time, so she couldn't just come inside. I bought a crate like the one in your video and made it nice and cozy and then covered it in blankets to keep her warm and feeling safe. She calmed down so much when the blankets covered most of the crate. After a night outsid in our garage, i decided it was too cold and I moved the crate inside. My 2 younger cats were not happy but the kitten seemed comforted by their presence (even though they were giving her some rather stern hisses). Anywho, i decided the kitten's name would be Hazel. I fed her by hand over the next few days, slept next to her cage, and just before we were able to get her a spot at a shelter, I was able to get her purring and bathed her several times with a damp cloth. I miss that little cat. I like your channel as it reminds me of her.

This can sometimes be a terrible idea. I went from providing shelter and food to one to caring for up to 21. Cats I have never seen before show up with babies. We've taken in so many babies and either domesticated them enough to adopt out to normal people, or we kept the ones that couldn't be adopted or one of us became too attached. Right now, we're down to 2 adults (both born here), two older kittens where the mom showed up with them one day, then vanished, and 2 three week old kittens that belong to one of the 2 adults. I'm about to snatch the kittens to get them ready for their own homes, then I'm getting that garage door fixed. Well, I probably won't get it fixed because whoever comes around will still need a safe and dry place to hang out. The neighborhood next to mine is literally overrun with feral cats, and they make their way over here. I'm also pretty sure the ones who have been here mooching off of me tell their little friends about us....lol. There are just so many of them. I fix all of mine, and we fix everyone we can catch, but they still keep coming.

My suggestions for names... The loud calico baby: SoundSystem. Because she's SO LOUD. Would also accept Boombox, because I grew up with my dad having a dedicated garage boombox (I think it was Jeep branded, from a million years ago when car manufacturers made merch) The squeaky void: WD-40 (Dee or Dub for short) The greybie: Drillbit. Because most drill bits are steel and steel is silver. Idk I don't have a good one for them. Automobile also works fantastically. The indignant brown tabby: Lawnmower. I have absolutely no reasoning behind this one, it just sounds like a very Mary style cat name.

I like Auto because it sounds like Otto, so maybe other items that could be homophones for human names? Miscellany (Miss Eleni)? Gauge (Gage)? Nail (Nael)? Plumb bob (just Bob)? Shovel (Havel [okay, that one's pushing it])? There are others I'm sure.
