#fossil #hybridhr #tech4all
When Hybrid HR came out there were a lot of reviews about it, and all of them were criticizing the software and the features; A few months later - time for a sanity check.
Generally these kind of hybrids are often quite successful - and because we barely see models of that type, Fossil have all the right elements to offer something outstanding - because they own a number of brands for classic watches, as well as participate actively in releasing WearOS based smart watches. And Hybrid HR combines the best out of these two worlds! You probably won’t like the price though - especially for a watch with no AMOLED screen and lack of GPS and fancy features - which is the expected tradeoff for that 2-week battery life. If $200 for the Hybrid HR sound a lot - I hear you!
Unboxing experience is great, which is usual for Fossil. First obvious top feature is the screen - they call it “always-on”, and it’s based on the E-ink technology - the same one as used in the so popular Kindles and many other eBook readers. That immediately reminds me of the good old pebble, and the attempt to revive the idea for e-ink watches by Gligo - which we tested almost a year ago.
Some specifications: Case diameter is 42mm, 22 mm band size. We mentioned the 1.06’’ e-ink display. Bluetooth 5.0; Battery capacity is undisclosed, but we know for sure that it lasts more than two weeks. If you don’t practice too many sports - even more! Four different areas for information, three buttons, waterproof for swimming, HR tracking, sleep tracking, customizable buttons, and since early Apriil 2020 - customizable background.
Operation is quite simple - and the huge difference to most watches out there is the fact that the top and bottom button are customizable! Meaning that you can associate with them the functions that you need.
There’s calories counter, and good HR tracking. It’s continuous, meaning that it measures pulse 24/7 - keep in mind that the sensor comes on and off every few minutes in order to preserve battery life. Should you need more detailed HR data - then enter a sport activity and you’ll get it. Sleeping is also measured - and despite the negative works some reviews have about it, it’s pretty good in my opinion! It won’t catch daily naps - like the majority of the smartwatches, but is very accurate about timing - when you fall asleep and when you wake up. Compared to the Watch GT2 by Huawei there’s almost no difference and we have recognized the GT series many times for their precise sleep tracking.
As for sports and workouts - you won’t be too impressed, because there’s no in-built GPS. But there still can be some good facts which you may analyze and use as data for creating action plans ant training programs.
It’s definitely a keeper, and if you’re not tempted by apps and too many smart options - it perfectly well covers everything you need to take good care of your health, at least concerning heartrate, sports and sleeping habits.

    I have had the fossil hybrid watch for about 2-1/2 years. I really liked the simplicity of it compared to the fitbit which caused me to become a bit obsessed with it. Along with the constant battery charging. That’s what intrigued me about the hybrid. Simple, effective and long lasting battery life. However I did find myself going back to the fitbit occasionally for the hr monitor. Then just a week ago I got this one. It’s the perfect combination of the two. Simplicity of a traditional watch and yet has the abilities that I need from a smart watch. For me it’s perfect.

    Had this for about 6months and I never liked a full blown smart watch, very clear E-Ink display and has a blueish backlight when not. Simple notifications displayed and really that's all I need. Battery last around 2 weeks which is great. Anything you feel is missing your phone is with you anyways. Looks like a classical watch but for the new age. Only thing a bit iffy is the water resistance which is not stated, probably won't recommend swimming in it or even showering. Getting up in the morning and heading out on cold mornings gives a foggy glass on the inside with a bit of condensation build up. Overall 4.5/5

    I think this (or maybe the waterproof TicWatch Pro 2020) MIGHT be the (not that)smartwatch I have in mind. I had the TIMEX DATALINK USB 851 that your could synch your Outlook calendar appts with notifications, contacts, and a few alarms but that's now obsolete. Does this calendar app synch with Google or Outlook or is it an entirely separate program that also has to be maintained? That could be a deal breaker.

    The calendar syncs with google calendar and is pretty good. Outlook can sync with Google Calendar, so it can be synced with the watch too.

    I'm considering getting this watch, coming from a Fossil Gen 5 smartwatch. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions that might help my decision. 1) What does the vibration feel like for notifications? Is it a loud buzz that's very audible in a quiet room or is it more of a subtle nudge that you just feel on your wrist? 2) How does the timer work? Is it easy to set a timer for say, 18 minutes? Something not a multiple of 5, for example. 3) Does your phone still buzz/ring when connected to the watch? With Wear OS, notifications on the phone are muted when the watch is connected which is great because my phone doesn't buzz in my pocket and my watch on my wrist at the same time. Thanks in advance

  • @TechMishka

    @TechMishka

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey John, let me try to help here: 1. the vibnration is rather quiet, but you can well feel it. 2. The timer has default increments of 5 minutes, but is also very easy to adjust to values that you need. 3. Yes, the phone rings, and the watch vibrates for notifications when received. Even if you don't hear the phone if it is inside the pocket and you are outdoors on a noisy street, there's a great chance to feel the vibration on your wrist. You can have your phone silenced and rely only on the watch vinbration.

    I love this watch. It's not perfect. Just picked it up yesterday and already one thing I don't like is light. Just should have used button to turn on the light. I think you have won me over with this, i have the Samsung gear sport and as much as i like it, i do crossfit but i dont really measure my activities as much as i should, i mostly use my watch for notifications and the time or controlling my music. recently i have been considering going back to a normal watch but worried ill miss my gear sport, i have considered the active2 but i cant see much of a difference when it comes to software changes to my current watch which still works great and still gets updates. this watch is the best of both worlds, however im worried the ink display will bug me lol :/ I had a pebble watch and i hated it.
