Fossil Hybrid HR Review: The Undercover Smartwatch

Ғылым және технология

Somewhere between a traditional timepiece and a smartwatch lies a peculiar product called a “hybrid” watch … and it’s a category that, frankly, I’ve usually ignored. But in my new neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn - where a flashy $400 Apple Watch still seems a little too “Williamsburg-y” - hybrids strike a better balance for some … and the new Fossil Hybrid HR is the smartest I’ve seen yet. Are a promised two-week battery life and always-on display enough to justify the Fossil Hybrid HR's $195 starting price? Join me for a closer look at this e-ink/analog wearable, in MrMobile’s Fossil Hybrid HR Review!

I think another understated benefit of the e-paper display is how handsome it looks in conjunction with the regular watch face and watch body. On first glance, you can't even tell it's a display as opposed to just a design on the face.

I'm still convinced that E-paper is the most underrated display technology. It can't do EVERYTHING but what it can do well, it does far better than any other display. There's something to be said for devices that are focused on doing a few things very well instead of trying to do everything.

Finally, I'm going to buy my first connected watch and I'm almost sure I'm going to be ordering this one tonight. How do you like your watches? Did you get this one yet?, if so, how do you like it? Honestly I was thinking about the Galaxy watch until I really looked into it, and I think a hybrid is more appealing to me. Do you ever feel like you're missing out on the "full on" smartwatch experience? I'd really appreciate the opinion of someone who's had the experience already, like you. Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Want a classy minimal watch but doesn't want a flashy smart tech on your wrist. This is the way to go. I can't describe the feeling of looking at it. But that e-ink really got me good at first sight, I was at retail store planning on getting this watch, at first I look at the demo set they lay it on the table, I really thought, it was just a fake watch set. Until I press the button, I was amaze when the clock was twirling around. When you put it on your wrist. It really felt like a regular watch, you can even make it better with your own custom watchface. The e-ink display is amazing on the watch, it really doesn't feels emulated, it felt like it meant to be there. Picking the right watchface will make it really stand out. I don't require a lot of tech on my wrist, just a simple notification that can vibrate for notification and calls is already good enough for me. My phone does lack a strong vibration, this watch vibration really is strong enough for you to notice. Can't really comment on how accurate the sporty stuff is though.

The watch looks exactly like a normal watch but can connect to your phone, vibrate and move the hands to a certain position to indicate different notifications and can control your phone in various ways such as play/pauseing music or working as a remote camera shutter button. It has a timer / stop watch built into the watch, and you can press a button and it'll point to the date. It's very feature rich for such an elegant thing, and to top it all off it only cost me £89 here in the UK!! I've barely worn my Gear s3 since

Just bought that Watch. The Notifications and Battery Life are exactly what I expected (I don't use Social Networks - so my Notifications are much less than watch MM probably experiences). And I find alot of improvementa have been made on the App. For those still unsatisfied with the App exists a modified version of said app from the Subreddit /r/FossilHybrids made by /u/coronafire. I have no complaints about the backlight activation, it is based on an accelerometer, that means one does not need to double tap the glass and get it greasy, instead you just need to tap a little more firmly on any part of the casing. I never felt it being unresponsive since. For the interface my only complaint is the inability to switch between presets created in the App directly on the watch. One can name the presets, why cant i then request those from the phone, on the watch.

Sloppy Toons Its not too bad if you get a watch that has a charging cradle, like my Samsung Gear s3 or my moto 360 gen2 (this actually turned the watch into a bedside clock while charging which was an awesome feature). All you do at the end of your day is lay the watch down into its cradle and it charges wirelessly while you sleep, great safe place to keep the watch while you're not wearing it, and fully charged ready to go in the morning. Easy.

@@ajburdett882 I've been using Gear S3 for years. All I need are to see time, notifications, alarm, timer, stopwatch. Charge it every day for that is too much Fenix 6x is better with good battery but crazy price.

I wonder how this would compare to the Mykronoz Zetime hybrid smart watch? The Zetime has a colour screen with possibly similar battery life. The Fossil hybrid has an advantage of an always on notifications.

I don't know what kind of screen pebble used, but my pebble sure can render smooth animation with good visibility under sunlight while lasting a week. Why there are no current smartwatch that use this tech?

I own the Steel HR (got it for a good price too) but that flick to get the hands to move would be so useful. I hope more Hybrids show up. The backlighting of this seems a bit flimsy for almost $200 though.

Are you able to record exercises, I.e. exercise bike or treadmill etc straight from the watch itself or is it all through the app

Fossil has been a great innovator in the world of the Hybrid Smartwatches. Keeping as many classic watch features & design works well for Fossil.

I own a Kronaby myself and I find it has just enough functions to be useful for me at work. Doesn't hurt that it's a gorgeous watch to look at as well. Having to charge my watch ever so often is a deal breaker to me.

That watch looks so cool..it just needs a touch control panel on the side (where the buttons are) so you can swipe up and tap to control it... and if it were in midnight green type colours it would look great aswell
