FORWARD ROLL: shoulder roll, by 7dan judo coach Graeme Spinks

Спорт

This video is about the JUDO forwards roll, and a side break fall
Also known as Parkour roll.
Also known as a shoulder roll.
Also featuring one crazy jump and roll "parachute landing" without the parachute, in demonstration of variations on judo rolling, for children's classes.
Note in training to make your back and arms shaped like a wheel, for a circular roll, & fewer bumps.
(suck your stomach in and round your shoulders and back)
Teacher Graeme Spinks, 7dan judoka, over 56 years Judo.

    I haven't done judo for 40 years. I was doing inline skating and took a fall on the pavement ... into a perfect shoulder roll that Sensei Hatashita taught me . I got up out of the roll, and went on skating without a scratch.

    I started judo as a 4 year old, but I am half asian and could never win from heavy dutch peers. Judo as defense is totally useless for me, but the rolls have actually saved me many times. Since I learned it as a child it's completely in my system. I rolled out of a car crash once when I was cycling. I was standing on my feet before I even realized what happened and I had no injuries.

    Beautiful video, sometimes it is not easy to teach breakfalls to scared students who still don't "feel their bodies" properly (I often have to let them start from a kneeling stance). This one looks like a very nice progression, thanks for sharing.

    The practice of rolling and falling gives a greater confidence in relaxed judo. 3 steps are learning to fall, learning hip defence, and then attacks can be done with greater confidence. Too many dojo focus on the wrong sequence of learning. Real learning is enhanced by following and sequencing falling and rolling skill acquisition earlier.

    If you follow the pattern for breakfalls accurately you rarely get injured in judo. It also depends on opponent looking after you, (as well as keeping to safe break fall routines.)

  • @JudoLife

    @JudoLife

    I have been training with multiple injuries for most of my life. (including at present an strained neck) If you wait for injuries to heal before recommencing training you will weaken the rest of your body, and most often if you have an injury its best to work with the injury being careful not to make it worse.

  • @daldude178

    @daldude178

    6 жыл бұрын

    I think you misunderstood my comment. I have multiple old injuries (from MMA training) and some of them will never heal. So of course I train and as you say "I work with it". But if you have an acute injury, let´s say you hurt your neck in training, then give it some days rest, see how it heals. I once trained with an acute neck injury and the result was a paralyzed arm for 3 months. Being not only a martial artist, but an MD (medical student at the time of injury), I really should have known better. So, my advice: Something that feels like a strained neck can be something much worse. Be careful, as a martial artist you rely on your body, treat it well.

  • @JudoLife

    @JudoLife

    6 жыл бұрын

    A cranked neck MMA type injury, potentially real serious. Just about every week someone tries to remove my head from my shoulders, either in no gi roll or judo with strong guys. Just rested it a week, and I agree. I hate resting, I always exercise other body parts, do what I can safely. Better to chill a bit than be seriously damaged by returning too soon.

    What is the benefit of hitting the ground with the ankle if the extended (bottom) leg for the break fall?

  • @JudoLife

    @JudoLife

    2 жыл бұрын

    Depends on the surface we land upon, and can be modified barefoot for extremely hard surfaces, such as in shorinji-kempo, regularly trained upon timber surfaces. Judo mats are forgiving. With footwear on the edge of the sole takes the hit so not really an issue. Really the backside, calf and thigh are doing the majority of the relaxed muscle absorption into the ground (and the foot takes a minor role.) The other leg (top leg) foot plays greater part in the absorption by slamming the sole in a sacrificial manner. That drives energy upwards and reduces the loading through the hip.
