Fortune Seekers in Gambia | VPRO Documentary

In Gambia, Bram Vermeulen follows two types of fortune seekers. On the one hand, Gambians trying to escape poverty and unemployment in their country by undertaking a dangerous journey to Europe.
On the other hand, the West African country is known for its love tourism, which mainly floats on economic inequality between older white tourists and Gambians hoping for monetary support or a visa. Love and happiness as a financial transaction.

I am a European native. I have never been in Africa so I do not know more about it than what I have seen in documentaries such as this one. The only thing I can say is that even if we have very comfortable material lives here, I do not think it is a good place to come to for African people. Everything is declining here and I believe we are not in a state to properly welcome people and insure they will have a better life. In our cities we can see countless African men and women living in bad conditions and having crappy jobs or no jobs at all, or even worse falling into poverty and drugs in the streets. This is not a life that I wish to anyone. Unfortunately as long as Europe does not stand back up economically I do not think it can welcome people. It makes me very sad to see people losing their life in the sea whilst chasing an illusional dream that only work for a few people. I wish the best to everyone and good luck to all African people

My heart just breaks into a million pieces💔💔💔💔for the deported young man whose Father espects him to carry the burden of suppoting the entire house-hold...THIS young man represents how the African youths are expected to risk their lives for the chance of getting to an unwelcoming Europe, USA, Canada etc etc.... I feel so much anger at the father who also represents thousands of poverty stricken parents who see children they couldnt give basic education, as their ,life Insurance " when they (the parents become old and feeble). This age-old mentality of African parents off-loading their responsibiilties and putting them on the shoulders of their children, is turning Africa into a Continent where Mass Exodus to Europe has become a do or die thing for our young people. As for the young Gigolos well though condemnable, this sort of " Business" are not restricted to Gambia alone..... it happens every day in Eastern Europe, Asia , Latin Americs, Las Vegas........to mention just a few places. May the souls of all those who lost their lives in their quest for a better life outside Africa, rest in perfect peace....Amen🙏.

I need to also add that Europe has been overly welcoming to foreigners, even to the extent that German people were forced out of their homes to create space for people from abroad. Also the poor people in Germany get less money than prior coming from other countries. Our schools are ruined because there is no money for schools. Life in Europe has enormously changed because so many people were taken in, who all brought their problems to Europe as well. If you can't make it where you are from, do, ou really believe you can make it in foreign places that are crowded with masses of people from other countries, who being along their personal share of problems? People coming to Europe don't even try to learn our language and expect money for nothing.

I have noticed that most Documentaries about this situation involving Gambians always hide the identities of the foreigners (blurred) but the young Gambians are not. Esp the beach scenes. Not cool at all, you might as well blur or show both parties involved in the sexual tourism. Can’t protect just one person’s identity. My 2 cents . Sad to watch, we need to protect Gambia and Gambians at all cost. Forever home !

@@arnowillekes7979 Well the airport scene is different. It’s mainly the Gambians with other Gambians expressing themselves. The beach scenes are the ones that concerns me as it’s depicting the sexual tourism scene which is an ongoing issue. Two wrongs don’t make it right but we have to be fair to both parties involved as they are adults too. Let’s show their faces or ask for their consent simple. Gambians can do better, I blame poverty. If this wasn’t an issue, I don’t think most of these folks involved in sexual tourism would degrade themselves to this level. In a normal circumstance would a young Gambian date the “elderly “ not to say marry someone old enough to be their grandma? I don’t think so. Praying and hoping for a better Gambia. We are indeed the smiling Coast. Don’t think so? Ask our neighbors. The peace one gets in Gambia is rare to find in some other places. This is an eye opener and I respect the work put in to make this documentary.

My family has lived in Mauritius since 1640s when my French male ancestors colonized it and took African women as their wives (and concubines) creating my race, there were no white women in the early colony (all Creole cultures share this history from Africa to the Americas). African Kings depopulated Africa and in doing so left it defenceless and without an adequate labour force. Slavery was big business for Africans. This is a fact. Whatever history you have "learned" is factually incorrect. Maybe you have some African ancestry, if so then go back to the continent and learn your history instead regurgitating whatever it is that you absorbed in whatever book you got it from.

If you ask that guy what the middle passage was, he cannot tell you. Because in European books and schools things like that are not taught. What he is saying is what Europeans happily write about and teach in their schools. That Africans proactively participated in the slave trade. And that is all BS meant to cover their tracks and justify their atrocities. We all know the atrocities that the west is causing in different parts of the world in recent times and how they are using the same methods as back in those days to cover their tracks and control the narrative. In the Caribbean, the states where slaves were transported to, there were plantations, cotton fields etc , how many of those were in Africa and in which countries before they came? The viciousness, torture, lynching and medical experiments the slaves went through under the Europeans, where in Africa was it happening before they came? But they are more than happy to spread the BS that Africans were already labouring their people as slaves before they came. In Africa, there was some form of servitude where poor people worked for the rich and those in the upper class. Happened in every society during those periods. But the vicious and inhumane form of slavery in which racism was an integral part of it was introduced by the Europeans 100%. Some very gullible Africans read the European narrative from European authors and call it a fact, very sad!

The greed makes people unhappy. Stop to want things and your suffering will stop. People are just too greedy, they want more and more, no matter how much you have, you will always want more, it’s never ending vicious circle that causes suffering.
