Fortis F39 Flieger Watch Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was watching a review on KZread about a month ago from The Urban Gentry and this Fortis F39 Flieger caught my eye so I ordered it online straight away.
In my rush to purchase this watch, I did not check it's specifications properly and I was left with a bit of an unwelcome surprise upon its arrival at my doorstep.
I share my thoughts...and I need to practice what I preach

Hey, that’s not really correct;-) Actually the 13 is our lucky number. And what we say is you must not be scared of flying on a 13th. But moreover once in a month it reminds you that you own a beautiful watch with a lot of attention to detail! Best regards and thanks for the great video. Team Fortis

@@FORTISWATCHES1912 hi fortis. I own a b42 marine master. I have owned it for about 15 years and needs a complete overhaul to get it into working order again and need another rubber strap that compliments the watch perfectly as it is cracking. But I love the rubber strap. The watch is a great summer watch, especially when I take my boat out on the lake.

Such a beautifully designed watch! Definitely caught my eye. Unfortunately, with my 6.6in wrist, the 50mm lug to lug would be a dealbreaker. Absolutely agree that it is bizarre that watch companies continue to use odd numbered lug widths. It almost seems like a badge of honor to annoy watch buyers/enthusiasts!

I really fell for the F-39 too when it was first released and was looking forward to TGVs review of it and the others he checked out. As he had previously mentioned that he was seriously considering purchasing one too. But I believe he didn’t in the end for the same reason that ultimately dulled my enthusiasm for it a bit...that 50mm lug to lug. Which is huge for a 39mm watch. I was expecting about 46-47mm max. As for the 21mm lug width, that is annoying, but you can still theoretically use 20mm straps on it. If you can put up with a bit of a gap on said lugs. That orange date numeral is visible on the photos of this watch and it’s brethren over at the Fortis website. So I wasn’t surprised by that very nice little touch either.

Hey David, to be honest, before i even found out about the 21mm lug width, the biggest contributing factor that caused me to buy this watch, was the fact that it had 50mm L2L with the 39mm case. I was instantly attracted to these dimensions as it is out of the norm and I happen to be lucky enough to have wide enough wrists to cater for the 50mm as well as enjoying the daily usability of a 39mm...it just made sense for me Now that the watch is here..its spot on. As for the 21mm, I will have to sort out some straps..I really would have loved that bracelet to work out but it added unnecessary weight and bulk which did not suit my routine. Cheers

Great review of this watch. I wouldn’t want it on a bracelet, and the leather strap works a treat! This looks like it could be my first watch from fortis, and would make an excellent addition to my collection. Shame about the 21mm lug width, but it’s not a deal breaker. They do a nice blue version of the watch now, but I think it looks better in black as a tool watch for me. Great stuff.

Hi Peter, just started to watch your channel recently and I wanted to say that you're one of the most detailed and informed reviewers on YT. Superb macros/ relatively "affordable" watches being reviewed which makes a change from other channels who just show content with unobtainable brands/models thus excluding enthusiasts who may have more average budgets for their collection. Delighted to have subscribed and look forward to your next update. Also I began my journey watching TGV and had seen his Fortis review a few weeks ago which is ironic. Congrats on the purchase regardless of the 21mm L2L..its a beautiful piece and the surprise orange 13th is such a nice detail too 👌👏👏

I love this watch..it's so complex in it's simplicity. It's definitely a shame about the lug width. My Seamaster with the 21mm lugs was one of the only downsides because it was so limiting on straps. Since I picked it up, I've accumulated several 21mm straps. So think of of this way, younow have a couple with 21mm lugs that can share straps. If you're looking for awesome custom straps at an incredible price, check out Martu Straps. All handmade to your specifications. The only downside is the shipping time, but Andrea will make anything you want. She sells on the Bay, but ordering direct is easier.

Then went back to drool... “Oh...it’s the model without the 24 hour markers!” 🤬 Thank God it was only a Timex!😓🙏🏻🤣 Best part though it the second hand is absolutely spot on for every single second!😎 I’m sure you’ll adapt some 20/22mm straps!😡😂

I would love to see more choice with 21 mm lug width straps. I have a flighty SNA411 and it is also a 21mm and I had to get a 20mm French paratroop NATO, the difference is very slight but wish I could have gotten it in 21mm. I did find a Barton's black rubber strap with yellow accents which will do nicely in 21 mm. Just my two cents!

Pilot style with a single rivet or the strap with a stitched flap on top & a 21mm width at the springbar but it juts out to 23mm under the lugs and tapers beautifully. They both jump to mind. When I started watching the video I thought the lug-to-lug was going to be the disappointment. I cannot believe how many people say "it's a nice watch but the lug-to-lug is too long" and that's from people who NEVER tried the watch on. I have this watch and LOVE it! I think we have similar wrists - mine is a hair over 6.75" and is flat. I also LOVE how stable it is on the wrist. The curvature of the case makes it feel like it was molded for my wrist. I feel the same way about the bigger B-42s I have. I cannot do big watches, but for some reason most Fortis work for me. I opted for the bracelet which I haven't taken off yet but I agree with you that it messes up the balance of the watch - almost makes it feel like the clasp is heavier than the watch head. I love this watch.

Great Review. It definitely better choice for a steel bezel watch compared to the Tudor P1. The redline on top is called the synchro line. It is suppose to allow pilots flying in formation to sync their actions within +-5 seconds. Not sure, but a total difference of 10 seconds sounds dangerous. The 13 is so called lucky number. The rumor has, that Fortis was officially bought and restarted by Jupp Phillipp wit 13 employees. The new GMT movement is also called Werk 13. Most of their recent releases are related to date 13 or the number 13. F43 Chrono - August 13. F39/41 - September 13. F43 GMT - October 13. I use 20mm straps on my 21mm lug width Omega Semaster 300 master coaxial (not professional) with no issues. You can not really tell the difference.

Strapcode is making a real push to expand their product line. Some of their straps come in 21mm size. There has to be a stainless mesh bracelet out there in 21mm. I think that would suit this watch nicely. Personally, I would be tempted to put it on an MN style strap.

That 50mm lug-to-lug is just insane. I'm glad it works for you, but Fortis lost an unbelievably high number of sales by not making it something more reasonable like 45mm. A 38mm case with a 45mm lug-to-lug would have been absolutely perfect. The whole point of the F-39 is to fit smaller wrists, so what were they thinking?

Hope it doesn't put you off of Fortis. My very first swiss watch was a Fortis - their flieger chronograph (v7750). (I've got three of them at this point.) I confess, though, that I'm always puzzled by folks who find 21mm to be so difficult, but then again I don't swap straps around all the time, either. Find a strap style and color you like and sand 0.5 mm off of each side of the strap, just where the springbars are, and you're done. Anyhoo, glad you like it. Hope you wear it... like actually wear it outside and around... a lot.

Lovely watch, regardless. I like it a lot, also. I like the fact it's not your typical Flieger. I just can't justify paying a hell of a lot of money for your typical A and B style Flieger dials since other than the brand manufacturing the watch, they all look identical. Only in your head will you know which has actual historic tie in and which is a new much more affordable "copy" from say a microbrand. As such, I can never justify making a purchase for a classic A or B dial Flieger watch. I think it's a bit too generic and could get bored of it easily. There's nothing that makes it different or special. But, I am open to the fact that some only want and appreciate that classic well-established design and will buy and enjoy such watches. As with this Fortis Flieger, I'd be more inclined to pay the premium for a quality watch, a brand that's been around for a while and has tie in to aeronautical watches, and it's unique and modern design. Misunderstanding lug width? It happens, as you say. Another TGV favorite and generally well-liked by many for that type of busy slide rule style chronograph pilot watch, I'm still unsure of the lug width for the Seiko Flightmaster SNA411 to this day? And, I've owned it, too. I feel there's still a lot of mixed specs floating out there. It's an odd size, but I can't remember if it was 19mm or 21mm? I have to refer back to some of my old photos to see what strap I had put on it to remember if I had squeezed in a known 22mm or had a little space for a known 20mm strap. And, to this day, I haven't bothered to really go back to find out so I'm still in the dark as to what actual lug width is on the Flighty. As with the it being 21mm.. I mean it's only 0.5mm difference on either side of the strap if using 20mm. 20mm still usable. And, conversely on the wider end, you could fit 22mm in as well. I wouldn't try to fit more than 1mm difference of actual lug width if using a strap a little smaller or larger.

Try a Vario Harris Tweed 20mm strap. After a while, because they are ‘hairy’, they kind of spread and will fill the 21mm with ease. The soft look of the tweed with the very hard look of the watch will be a very interesting contrast.

I definitely don't mind the strap size (cm'on mate, non watch geeks LIVE AMONG US, noone will notice our OCD 😜) on such a crisp, pop (design-wise) dial. But then again it's a flieger, with the same triangle i love to hate... Nevertheless i dare to say it's rather german design, like a Porsche watch from the 90's or a BMW dashboard (that almost made it to production... 😁) in the early 00's. What i really like though is the ring of the indicies that's elevated combined the wildly sloped SS bezel, that's a way too cool IMO! Fortis is a hidden gem, if you are in such watches, enjoy the (another...???) new purchase. Now let's count'em again.. 24 plus one? 25... Plus one? 26... (Hey, we must reduce'em! ...Naaaah!!!!) Peter, about the red date: As far as I know, Fortis was bought by it's new owner, Jupp Philipp on Friday the 13th. This is why Friday and especially the 13th is very important to Fortis and they marked this with the red 13 on their new Fliegers. Bummer about the 21mm lug with. Both the 39 and the 41 seem to have 21mm lug with. So they clearly did this to sell their own straps. I like Fortis, but IMHO that was a bad move.
