Fort Kochi Tourist Places | Kerala, Ep 1 | Food, History, Kathakali Dance & Shopping | DesiGirl Vlog
I travelled to Kerala in Nov 2022 and this is my first vlog from the series. In this episode, we are exploring the Fort Kochi area - the paradise for travellers. Places I have covered:
1. Chinese Fishing nets - This one is one of the key attractions of Fort Kochi. Chinese Fishing Nets are an indigenous way of catching fish. These nets are fixed on teak poles and bamboo. You will see 4-6 fishermen required to handle one fishing net. There are many Chinese Fishing nets installed at this spot with hundreds of fishermen at the job.
2. St. Francis Church - Located at the Vasco De Gama square at Fort Kochi, this is one of the oldest churches built by the Europeans in India. Visit it for the rich architecture and history. The video camera is not allowed inside the church.
3. Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - This place is also known as 'Kotta Palli' in the local language. It is one of the 9 basilicas in Kerala. You must visit this church for its rich architecture, which definitely makes it one of the most impressive churches in India. It is a place of devotion as well as a centre of historic significance, endowed with architectural and artistic grandeur and colours of the gothic style.
4. Jew Town - This place is my personal favourite from Fort Kochi. It's a street full of antique shops selling unique souvenirs. This is the street which used to be dominated by Jewish people. Now there are barely 2-3 Jewish families left but it's a place you must visit to get a glimpse of the rich culture of Fort Kochi.
5. Pardesi Synagogue - More than a 100 yrs old building in the corner of Jew Town, you must visit this place to understand the arrival of Dutch and Jewish people in India. It houses many rare antiques. The synagogue (temple for Jewish people) woos many visitors and adds to the quaint charm of the Jew Town area in Fort Kochi.
6. Ginger Hotel Kerala Food - Visit this place for a beautiful view of the backwaters and mouthwatering food. You can easily spend 2-3 hrs soaking the beauty of the backwaters here.
7. Kathakali Dance - I visited Cochin cultural centre to watch the live performance of Kathakali dance and also the elaborated makeup process. Kathakali is one of the famous classical dances of India. Kerala is the place from where this story play genre of art originated.

Kochi is a city ruled by 3 European powers, Portuguese, Dutch and British. All 3 were in friendly relation with kingdom of Cochin.
Fantastic... मुझे 12 साल पहले का वो समय याद आ गया जब मैं पहली बार इस जगह गया था. आज आपने इस वीडियो के जरिये फिर से एहसास करा दिया... बहुत धन्यवाद जी.

Hey desi girl traveller. What a beautiful vlog. When you said you love collecting fridge magnet I was like vigorously nodding my head and saying "me too , me too".. I also agree that being an Indian we should be traveling within the country and explore every nook and corner.. We live in a beautiful country and should also try to keep it beautiful . Jai Hind 🙏

Love your vlogs Your vlogs are so informative, photography is excellent.
Exceptional video💕💕
Thoroughly enjoyed the episode because the way local streets, markets, cultures are explained is unparallel. People do keep showing all the tourist spots, but this video shows the real vibe of city and this is a deal breaker Kudos, keep going 👍

Very nice! I was born and grew up in Fort Cochin and I could spot many mistakes in the decsriptions of some other videos about the place. But you are so dedicated and it's so obvious that you have put in sincere effort to learn the correct information before you speak of it. Thanks! And good luck with your trips!

The name Kochi or Cochin has nothing to do with china, Cochin was put by British, for their Convenience of pronounciation. Kochu- Small and Azhi -lagoon. Kochuazhi became Kochi. Kochi was never called British Kochi even when British was ruling the country.
@arjunraj823

Kochu Azhi is also not proved. There is documentation that Chinese merchants named it Ko Chin (like China) because the place was so dear to them.

No any outsiders ruled Kochi or Kerala in total. Every deeds or trades were bi/multilateral. Yes, Christian missionaries were here to convert Hindus providing RICE BAG, Biblica EDUCATION. Go and study the real history, not what you studied in Kerala schools.

Saint Francis Church is not the first church. It is one of the oldest ones. The first church is St. Thomas Church, Palayoor, Thrissur. 6:11
Even Though Kerala is called God's own country, it has the largest number of atheists than other states 😜

The net was brought by the Chinese. But the technique was developed by the Portuguese. And that's why u seldom find this anywhere else in the world.
St. Francis church is not the first church in Kerala. St. Thomas came to Kerala in A.D.52 it is believed, and converted a no. Of families to Christianity. Churches were supposed to have come up then. But they were pretty simple.

There is church literature in Kerala that will give you more info and proofs. Could contact the Syrian Christian seminaries for the history of the Kerala or Thomas Christians.

Traditionally it was all men performance in Kathakali, now there are lot of women performers.....
Travancore raja himself claimed that he was dasan of Lord vishnu. He ruled over travancore for Lord Vishnu. From that concept, these was taken later and used to promote tourism in Kerala as "God's own country".
Parushuram Claimed the land of kerala as his own hence called GOD's OWN COUNTRY. Facts..
According to hindu mythology, kerala is created by lord parashurama, by throughing his axe into ocean to lift the land from sea. . May be So that the tag of god's own country came.....
